Estudo fenomenológico dos neutrinos em experimentos que utilizam fontes terrestres / Phenomenological study of neutrino experiments that use land-based sources

Walter José da Costa Teves 17 December 2003 (has links)
In this thesis, we have done two kind of phenomenological studies through a detailed analysis of present and future terrestrial experiments. In the first study, we analyze two exotic mechanisms of flavour conversion: quantum decoherence and non-standard neutrino-matter interactions. In the case of decoherence, we impose constraints on the decoherence parameter and test how to distinguish between the pure decoherence solution and the standard neutrino ascillation mechanism in the contexto f two neutrino generations. For non-standard interactions, assuming it as a sub-leading process compared to the standard oscillation, we find the possible limits that can be achieved on the strength of these interactions using a future neutrino factory. In the second part of the study, we determine the solar oscillation parameters using a combined analysis of solar neutrino and KamLAND data, and estimate the precision on the atmospheric mixing parameters by that can be accomplished by the LongBaseline experiments MINOS, ICARUS and OPERA. Finally, we investigate the capability of future neutrinoless Double beta decay experiments to determine the non-oscillation parameters.

Expérience SuperNEMO pour la recherche de la double désintégration bêta sans émission de neutrino : conception et réalisation du système de déclenchement du module démonstrateur / SuperNEMO experiment for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay : design and implementation of the trigger system for the demonstrator module

Oliviero, Guillaume 16 October 2018 (has links)
The SuperNEMO experiment is designed for the neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ) research involving a massive Majorana neutrino (ν ≡ ν̄). The demonstrator module of the experiment is currently being installed at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM). The so-called tracko-calo detection technique allows the energy measurement of the particles passing through the detector and a complete reconstruction of their kinematics. This thesis presents the design, simulation and implementation of the electronics trigger system for the SuperNEMO demonstrator module. The purpose of this system is to maximize the detection efficiency for ββ events as well as for background events due to natural radioactivity while reducing the acquisition rate caused by spurious events. Pattern recognition and calorimeter-tracker association algorithms have been developed and implemented in electronic boards after validation by Monte-Carlo simulations. The performance targets have been reached, taking into account different constraints (physics of the detectors, electronics, real time) with maximized detection efficiency for events of interest.

Predictions of Effective Models in Neutrino Physics

Bergström, Johannes January 2011 (has links)
Experiments on neutrino oscillations have confirmed that neutrinos have small, but non-zero masses, and that the interacting neutrino states do not have definite masses, but are mixtures of such states. The seesaw models make up a group of popular models describing the small neutrino masses and the corresponding mixing. In these models, new, heavy fields are introduced and the neutrino masses are suppressed by the ratio between the electroweak scale and the large masses of the new fields. Usually, the new fields introduced have masses far above the electroweak scale, outside the reach of any foreseeable experiments, making these versions of seesaw models essentially untestable. However, there are also so-called low-scale seesaw models, where the new particles have masses above the electroweak scale, but within the reach of future experiments, such as the LHC.In quantum field theories, quantum corrections generally introduce an energy-scale dependence on all their parameters, described by the renormalization group equations. In this thesis, the energy-scale dependence of the neutrino parameters in two low-scale seesaw models, the low-scale type I and inverse seesaw models, are considered. Also, the question of whether the neutrinos are Majorana particles, \ie , their own antiparticles, has not been decided experimentally. Future experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay could confirm the Majorana nature of neutrinos. However, there could also be additional contributions to the decay, which are not directly related to neutrino masses. We have investigated the possible future bounds on the strength of such additional contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay, depending on the outcome of ongoing and planned experiments related to neutrino masses. / QC 20110812

Models in Neutrino Physics : Numerical and Statistical Studies

Bergström, Johannes January 2013 (has links)
The standard model of particle physics can excellently describe the vast majorityof data of particle physics experiments. However, in its simplest form, it cannot account for the fact that the neutrinos are massive particles and lepton flavorsmixed, as required by the observation of neutrino oscillations. Hence, the standardmodel must be extended in order to account for these observations, opening up thepossibility to explore new and interesting physical phenomena. There are numerous models proposed to accommodate massive neutrinos. Thesimplest of these are able to describe the observations using only a small numberof effective parameters. Furthermore, neutrinos are the only known existing particleswhich have the potential of being their own antiparticles, a possibility that isactively being investigated through experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay. In this thesis, we analyse these simple models using Bayesian inference and constraintsfrom neutrino-related experiments, and we also investigate the potential offuture experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay to probe other kinds of newphysics. In addition, more elaborate theoretical models of neutrino masses have beenproposed, with the seesaw models being a particularly popular group of models inwhich new heavy particles generate neutrino masses. We study low-scale seesawmodels, in particular the resulting energy-scale dependence of the neutrino parameters, which incorporate new particles with masses within the reach of current andfuture experiments, such as the LHC. /
QC 20130830

Effect of shell closure N = 50 and N = 82 on the structure of very neutron-rich nuclei produced at ALTO : measurements of neutron emission probabilities and half lives of nuclei at astrophysical r-processes path / Effet de la fermeture des couches N = 50 et N = 82 sur la structure des noyaux très riches en neutrons produits sur ALTO : mesures de probabilités d'émission de neutrons et des temps de vie des noyaux sur le site de processus-r

Testov, Dmitry 17 January 2014 (has links)
Nowadays we are all witnesses of a competition of facilities at different countries to study unknown regions of neutron rich nuclei. Much efforts are devoted to understand the role of neutron excess and its influence on nuclei in vicinity of closed neutron shells. One of the means to investigate nuclear structure is in beta-decay. Once a nucleus is proven to exist, its beta-decay properties, such as T1/2 and Pn (probability of beta-delayed neutron emission), which are relatively easy to measure, can provide the first hints on the nuclear structure. On the r-process site, "waiting points"(nuclei on closed neutron shells) has significant effects on the r-process dynamics and the abundance distribution. The actual side and the astrophysical conditions under which the nuclear synthesis takes place are still not certainly known - since r-process nuclei are difficult to produce and to study experimentally, input parameters for r-process calculations are mostly derived from theoretical models. As it has been seen lately, most of the theories have failed to reproduce newly measured data sets near shell closures. With new experimental data already (or shortly) available theoretical approaches can be adjusted. Since a beta-delayed neutron emission becomes strong if not dominating decaying channel for nuclei far stability, a proper neutron detector to study their properties is indispensable. To conduct the appropriate investigations, in the frame of the present thesis, in close collaboration with JINR (Dubna) a new detection system was constructed. It consists of 80 ³He-filled counters, 4π beta detector and a HPGe in order to measure simultaneously beta, gamma, neutron activity. The development of such a detection system system, currently installed at ALTO ISOL facility, was the first objective of the thesis. Then, during two experimental campaigns conducted to investigate beta decay properties of neutron rich nuclei in the neighborhood of N=50, N=82 the workability of the newly produced detection system was proven. In the vicinity of ⁷⁸Ni: half- lives and probability of beta-delayed neutron emission for ⁸º,⁸²,⁸³,⁸⁴Ga were measured. We were the first to observe the structure of ⁸¹,⁸² Ge via beta neutron gated gamma spectra. Thanks to the neutron detection channel the absolute intensities of beta decay were proposed for the first time. In the vicinity of ¹³²Sn the half lives of ¹²³Ag, ¹²⁴Ag, ¹²⁵Ag and ¹²⁷In, ¹²⁸In was measured. For the first time the beta delayed neutron emission was observed for ¹²⁶Cd, its Pn value also measured. Based on the data obtained we come to the conclusion that to figure out the relative contribution of allowed and forbidden decays more theoretical efforts should be done crossing the N=50 shell. Whereas in the vicinity of N=82 shell more experimental challenge are required.
