Performing Heinrich Biber's Mystery Sonatas on Solo Guitar, and Principles for Arranging Early Baroque Solo Sonatas

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This is a solo guitar transcription of the first five movements, known as the "Joyous Mysteries," of the Mystery Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, accompanied by a history of the sonata collection, an analysis of the process of translating a Baroque solo sonata to the guitar, and a guide for performance. The work was chosen because of its significance and popularity within violin repertoire, and the suitability of the solo sonata genre for performance on a guitar. The first section of this project addresses the history and appeal of Biber and the Mystery Sonatas. It is supplemented by a brief survey of guitar transcriptions of Biber's compositions, and the value of the present edition in modern guitar literature. The second section explores the process and challenges of arranging the Mystery Sonatas for solo guitar, followed by a summation of the general allowances and limitations the genre offers to arrangers. The third section focuses on performance practice issues encountered in adapting this series and other Baroque solo sonatas to the guitar. The project concludes with the arrangement, complemented with the original violin and continuo parts for comparison. Although instrumentations may force an arranger to impose speculative harmonies and countermelodies on a thin texture or sacrifice inner voices in a denser texture, the solo sonata's instrumentation of melody and continuo provides an effective balance. This style allows an arranger three important details: a clear and paramount melody, a flexible bass line, and harmonies with unspecified voicings. Similarly, the compositional freedom that Baroque composers allowed to performers also facilitates the arranging process and enables a variety of creative solutions. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2014

The Fifteen "Mystery" Sonatas of H.I.F. Biber (1644-1704)

Vollen, Linda Hunt 08 1900 (has links)
The "Mystery'" sonatas for scordato violin and continuo by H. I. F. Biber (1644-1704) had been largely ignored until 1905, when they were included in the collection of Austrian masterpieces, Denkmäler der Tonkunst der 0sterreich. Even then, they were the cause of some confusion which was later corrected in an addenda to the volume which included this series of sonatas. In the baroque period, scordatura was used by a few of Biber's contemporaries, but the technique is not commonly used today. In order to fully understand and to appreciate the " mystery" sonatas, a knowledge of scordatura is necessary, and this technique is discussed in Chapter II. Because the 17th century violins differed slightly from those used today, and the resources of the instrument had not yet been fully developed, a discussion of these aspects has been included. A comparison of the works of Biber with those of his contemporaries shows him to be an innovator who contributed greatly to the growing technique of the violin.

The mystery of the Mystery sonatas : a musical rosary picture book

Strieck, Katia. January 1999 (has links)
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's (1644--1704) Mystery Sonatas of 1676 are a set of fifteen sonatas for violin and continuo plus one unaccompanied passacaglia for solo violin. They are unusual in their use of scordatura and in the presence of an image associated with the Rosary devotion before each sonata. This association between image and music in the sonatas, and the correspondence to the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary closely resembles the structure of seventeenth-century Rosary picture books. / In this thesis the context, background, and meaning of the sonatas is explored. The first chapter examines the function of the sonatas and places them in context by outlining musical life in Salzburg, the sonata tradition, the Rosary devotion, Emblem books, and Rosary picture books. The second chapter focuses more on the collection as a whole and on elements such as key, dance affect, and scordatura. The third chapter consists of an examination of three sonatas---each one unique in placing the listener in a different relation to the mystery.

Chat Language : In the continuum of speech and writing

Lind, Adam January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to determine where on a continuum between speech and writingwritten computer-mediated communication (chat language) would be placed. The essay makes use of a methodology based on Biber (1988). This was done using a quantitative research methodology based on counting and comparing specific linguistic features in different texts. The data for chat language came from the NPS Chat Corpus. Other data used were transcripts of spoken discourse as well as a popular scientific text as material for comparison. This essay is mainly focused on four features: the use of pronouns, passives, ellipsis and the type/token ration of each individual text. Despite the limited size of the material sampled, the results showed that chat language had more in common overall with speech than with writing.

Auenrenaturierung durch den Biber (Castor fiber L.)

Pönitz, Lisa 17 October 2016 (has links)
This bachelor thesis focuses on neccesary renaturation measures in meadow areas of second grade rivers and the ongoing distribution of the european beaver (Castor fiber L.) in a combined way. The main objective is to establish an area-concept, which is serving as a part of the proactive beaver management in the administration district Mittelsachsen aiming to reduce the potential of conflicts on the demanded areas. On the one hand, requirements of C. fiber on his potential habitat has to be fulfilled and his activly landscaping way of life should be accepted in this regions. On the other hand human-caused beneficiary claims have to be considered with the same importance. Nevertheless the fundamental approach is to give the beaver the opportunitiy to use his outstandig abilities in serving as a renaturater and key-species for biodiversity in this areas of interest. The project is carried out with the program Quantum GIS by using a self-created method of area-analysis and -assessment. In this way 270 potential areas for meadow renaturation measures through the beaver could be succesfully analysed. Those can be found spread all over the area of interest in Mittelsachsen. The following area-assessment is based on the grade of habitat-suitability for the beaver and it’s potential for an enhancement in a conservational meaning. Consequently one can judge the demanded areas according to their priorisation for measures like inclusion in compensation and substitute measures, regional landscapeplans or other measures of natural conservation.

Biber - Castor fiber: Biologische Vielfalt in Sachsen

05 August 2021 (has links)
