Mestrado em Bioética / Master Degree Course in Bioethics / A privacidade conceito de difícil abordagem, avesso a consensos desde a sua fundamentação etimológica, é cada vez mais reclamado numa sociedade que frequentemente é depreciativamente apelidada de técnico-científica . Talvez porque nunca como até agora, a pessoa na sua privacidade esteve tão ameaçada. Reconhecida como uma exigência directa da pessoa, sendo mesmo uma necessidade humana básica, a privacidade apresenta-se como um conceito relevante em todas as áreas da actividade humana, sendo consagrada um direito fundamental expresso em inúmeros documentos de índole jurídica. Não se esgotando em aspectos meramente descritivos, a invasão da privacidade implica a violação da individualidade, da liberdade e da dignidade da pessoa. Na área da saúde estas preocupações colocam-se com uma tónica acrescida, uma vez que a satisfação da necessidade de cuidados resulta sempre, em maior ou menor grau, numa invasão da privacidade da pessoa nas suas diferentes vertentes. Destacamos no presente trabalho a vertente informacional, materializada nos dados de carácter pessoal que o estado de saúde/doença inevitavelmente gera, também considerados como dados sensíveis, e a vertente física fortemente aliada à necessária exposição corpórea da pessoa. Transpondo esta problemática para unidades particulares como os serviços de urgência, caracterizados por uma elevada afluência de utentes, espaços despersonalizados, agitados, partilhados por uma multiplicidade de pessoas, desde utentes a profissionais, constatamos haver lacunas no respeito por este direito fundamental, que se retratam no incumprimento da legislação em vigor, no desrespeito pelos direitos dos utentes, na despreocupação com a deontologia profissional e mesmo no próprio marasmo em que se encontram inseridas as instituições hospitalares e outras entidades com responsabilidades nesta matéria. Procuramos neste trabalho traçar algumas sugestões de alteração para um maior respeito pelo direito à privacidade na prática dos cuidados de saúde em particular nos serviços de urgência. Contudo, estamos conscientes que a concretização de grande parte das sugestões apresentadas, não depende directa e exclusivamente dos profissionais de saúde, mas de entidades como as escolas, as faculdades, as administrações das instituições hospitalares, as Comissões de Ética para a Saúde, a Entidade Reguladora da Saúde, as Ordens profissionais, o Ministério da Saúde. No entanto, parece-nos claramente necessário prosseguir a reflexão acerca desta questão bioética que a todos toca e em si encontra inscrita a dignidade da pessoa humana como fundamento ético. / Privacy - a difficult concept to debate, averse to consensus right from its etymological foundations, is increasingly more demanded in societies depreciably labelled as technical-scientific . This may be so because people's privacy has never been under as much threat as presently. Acknowledged as a an individual's direct demand and as a basic human need, privacy presents itself as a relevant concept in all human activity spheres and is considered to be a fundamental right which comes to be included in the most diverse documents of judicial nature. Not solely subject to aspects of mere descriptive nature, invasion of privacy implies the violation of individuality, of liberty and of an individual's dignity. In the health field these concerns are raised more vigorously, since the satisfaction of the care needs always implies, in a greater or lesser degree, an "invasion" of the individual s privacy in different ways. It is our intention to debate in this work the way that information focused on details of a personal nature are generated due to an individual's state of health/illness, which are also consolidated as sensitive details, and the way that, physically speaking, the need arises for an individual's corporal features to be exposed. Flitting this problematic area to particular units such as the emergency and casualty units, which are characterised by a very large affluence of users, depersonalised space, agitated, shared by a multiplicity of people, from users to professionals, where we witness a lack of respect for this fundamental right, manifesting itself in the way that present legislation is ignored, the lack of respect for the rights of users, the lack of concern for professional deontology and even the apathy from those responsible for hospital institutions and other entities. It is our intention to present in this work some suggestions for change, which may bring a higher respect for privacy within health care, particularly, in emergency and casualty services. However, we are aware that the implementation of a great number of these suggestions does not depend directly or exclusively on health professionals, but on entities such as colleges, university departments, hospital administration services, Health Ethics Commissions, Health Regulation Entity, Professional Associations and the Ministry of Health. However, it is clearly necessary to carry on reflecting on this bio-ethical issue which concerns everybody and within which human dignity is an ethical foundation.

The opioid epidemic is a public health crisis. How the crisis developed, how to mitigate its effects, and how to prevent it from spreading is less transparent. The practice of pain management poses a myriad of ethical challenges. The following essay will examine ethical dilemmas that arise during the decision-making process with regards to pain management in the context of addiction after a brief history of pain management and discussion of the corresponding legal and medical regulations.

As the science related to genetic engineering becomes more advanced, more and more ethical questions relating to technologies such as CRISPR and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) arise. If we have the opportunity to choose the genes of our future children in order have children with our desired characteristics, should we do so? Is it okay to mess with some genes of your future child and not others? In this paper, I discuss arguments and objections associated with these questions. The aim of this paper is to show that it is ethical to alter the DNA of your future child or select a specific child only when you are attempting to improve the health of that child.
