Rooted in water: re-connecting the community of Black River First Nation

Handkamer, Kevin 22 April 2016 (has links)
The community of Black River First Nation located along the shores of Lake Winnipeg in eastern Manitoba began as a seasonal Anishinaabe fishing village, and became a permanent settlement upon entering into Treaty in 1876. A renewed interest within the community to preserve traditional knowledge and remain connected to the past led to my involvement with the community. Upon learning of a historic settlement site once connected by an extensive water and land based transportation network, design decisions were made to reintegrate this network into the community. This practicum explores how a change in settlement location has impacted community development and proposes a design strategy for the historic Black River settlement site that creates destinations and travel routes to enhance and rediscover connections to the lands and waters that shaped the community. / May 2016

Ecotourism as a conservation strategy in Black River, Jamaica

Brief, Dominique Ariane. January 1997 (has links)
Nature-based tourism is proposed as a conservation strategy in both the developed and developing world, yet few empirical studies exist examining how the conservation process is achieved. An emerging nature-based tourism industry in Black River, Jamaica was studied to determine the factors involved in creating a symbiotic tourism-environment relationship. The tourism-environment relationship brings into play many stakeholders and at the local level these include the tour developers, conservation authorities, the natural environment, the host population and the visiting public. In this study, surveys of tour developers, conservation authorities and the host population indicate that Black River nature-based tourism is degrading the natural and host environment. To modify this outcome of resource degradation adequate administrative arrangements must be established to disengage the elite growth process in favor of a more equitable distribution among a majority of stakeholders. Surveys of the visiting public indicate satisfaction of this consumer group and provide detailed information to guide marketing and management strategies for further improvement of the tour product. Recommendations are presented to strengthen the link between nature-based tourism and conservation of the environment.

Evaluation of disaggregation model in arid land stream flow generation

Imam, Bisher, 1960- January 1989 (has links)
A Disaggregation model was tested for arid land stream flow generating. The test was performed on data from Black River, near Fort Apache, Arizona. The model was tested in terms of preserving the relevant historical statistics on both monthly and daily levels, the monthly time series were disaggregated to a random observation of their daily components and the daily components were then reaggregated to yield monthly values. A computer model (DSGN) was developed to perform the model implementation. The model was written and executed on the Macintosh plus personal computer Data from two months were studied; the October data represented the low flow season, while the April data represented the high flow season. Twenty five years of data for each month was used. The generated data for the two months was compared with the historical data.

Military, traders, civil servants, NGOs, national and international researchers, all leaving their mark on the region. Make an analysis based only on anthropological postulates would be enought, however, due to the complexity of the region and the interdisciplinary character of the Graduate Program in Society and Culture in the Amazon we make use of the sociological writings of Max Weber and the Franz Boas, Lévi-Strauss, Mircea Eliade, Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira, Neide Fiori, Robin Wright, Joseph Campbell. Progress in research starting in the chronological narrative of occupation of the Amazon region in order that the reader may be located towards time-space. Secondly we make use of the researcher's experience reports and mythical narratives of the peoples of the upper Rio Negro and especially the Yanomami people in order to show the relevance of such manifestation for the maintenance of ethnic identity of the peoples of the region and demonstrate that even with all the influences and changes in intertribal relations there is a strong presence of cultural element in the life of these people specifically. Methodologically we chose to use the path of ethnography by us seem the most appropriate to help us walk the paths along the traditional peoples of the upper Rio Negro. During the work it became clear that the question of identity today, more than ever, it is important to point to the ethnic groups and ethnic relations are reconfigured over time in order to adapt to the new social needs. Within this reality the mythological world of these people is what helps them to maintain their connection with their ancestors. The search for ways to value the traditions and be part of the ongoing process in the national society also sets up a reality.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of the Black River Bridge - A Serviceability Study

Zaeem, Mohammed Rizwan H. 11 December 2013 (has links)
An attempt was made to predict the service life of the Black River Bridge using non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA). Numerical modeling was performed using NLFEA software developed by Prof. Evan Bentz. A large number of analytical studies were conducted to assess the strength and behaviour of the bridge under normal truck loading and at failure loads. It was determined that the bridge is shear critical. Location of trucks that would cause maximum deflection and highest crack widths were identified. It is believed that these findings will have a significant impact on physical measurements that can be incorporated into future bridges, helping researchers determine the locations in the bridge that are ideal for instrumentation. Axial compression present in the bridge can significantly affect deflection and crack widths. Incorporating thermal and shrinkage effects into the NLFEA are recommended as topics for further research. Appropriate estimate of thermal and shrinkage strain will aid in better prediction of axial stresses.
