Fortuin, Levona 30 November 2004 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of this research study was to determine whether social workers at ground-level experience job satisfaction in their current job situations, as well as to determine the motivational factors that play a role in this regard. Eleven non-governmental welfare organisations in the Boland Region were included in this investigation. Forty-seven social workers participated in this investigation. Based on this investigation into the experiences relating to job satisfaction of ground-level social workers, the following conclusions became evident: Younger social workers experience more job satisfaction then there counterparts in mid-life, while the social in the age bracket of 50 years and above seem to experience more job satisfaction. There seems to be a great deal of job dissatisfaction amongst social worker in the Boland Region as two thirds of the respondents indicated the intention to change their current places of employment. Based on theses conclusions, it is recommended that supervisors within region should establish a forum at which they can deliberate about their management role as supervisors in order to promote job satisfaction amongst social workers. / Social work / M.Diac.

Rastafari bushdoctors and the challenges of transforming nature conservation in the Boland area

Olivier, Lennox Edward 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 2007 the National People and Parks Programme was rolled out as a platform for co-management between successful land claimants, indigenous natural resource user groups and conservation authorities. It aimed to promote social ‘transformation’ in conservation management by responding to the needs of all South Africans. This thesis engages with the efforts made by CapeNature Conservation Board and RasTafari bushdoctors in the Boland area to resolve a conflict around the illegal harvesting of indigenous medicinal flora from protected areas. An investigation into the discursive and material practices of the RasTafari bushdoctors reveal what they present as a substantially different way of being-with-nature in comparison to the historically produced dominant conception of nature. This difference cannot be understood outside the complex relations from which they emerge and allows a better understanding of the social condition for the possibility of Bossiedokters’ voices to be heard today. This thesis culminates with a critical analysis of recent dialogues between Bossiedokters and CapeNature around co-management platforms. These I argue reveal that the inequalities voiced by the healers are once again silenced by government practices ostensibly designed to uplift them. Conceptualising this conflict through the lens of ‘environmentality’ suggests its usefulness as well as its limitations in grasping contemporary South African dilemmas about transformation of nature. While RasTafari bushdoctors want to reclaim their social authority, the question remains how and whether they will be able to transform conservation practice before conservation practice transforms them. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Nasionale ‘People and Parks’ program was in 2007 aangekondig as die platform vir mede-bestuur tussen suksesvolle land eisers, inheemse natuurlike hulpbron gebruikersgroepe en natuurbewaringsowerhede.

"Have we no right to organise?" Black political organisations and farmworkers struggles in the Western Cape: 1912 - 1930

Taft, Trevor January 1991 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / This study is primarily a history of black political organisations and their attempts to organise farmworkers in the rural Western Cape (1912 1930) with special reference to the Boland. The attempts made by these organisations to organise farmworkers in the Boland between 19:2 1930 raises a number of important issues which will be addressed in this study. Firstly, there is the issue to what extent capitalist agriculture existed in this area before and during the period under observation. On a general level there is a question to what extent capitalist relations of production existed in the agricultural production in the Boland. This would clearly have an effect on organisations attempting to organise farmworkers as well as the nature and form farmworkers struggles would develop into. Secondly, it is clear that the attempts at organisation the ANC(WC) was more successful than the A.P.O. and the I.C.U. put together. This raises a whole series of issues concerning the nature and form of these organisations, for example the strategies and organisational methods that were used, the issues that were addressed and the discourse and ideology of the A.P.O., I.C.U. and ANC(WC). Lastly, an attempt is made at evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the three organisations under consideration with a view to draw important lessons from these struggles for the organising of farmworkers in the future.

A Ghazal for the Ends Of Things

McConnell, Jannell Christine 12 May 2012 (has links)
In Eavan Boland’s Domestic Violence, it is through the conflation of the secret with the female body that secrets become the way to simultaneously expose, as well as mediate, one of Boland’s most often addressed themes: a split between the public image of Irish woman as mythic symbol and the private realities of the lives of actual women. This paper argues that these are poems that, even as they explore the relationship between the secret and the body, simultaneously begin to embody the secret themselves. In so doing, it is the poems themselves that ultimately become the secret possessors, revealing and concealing in equal measure as they open up a counter-narrative to the public myths of the Irish woman through their repossession of the body and of desire.

Growth responses to fertilizer application of thinned, mid-rotation Pinus radiata stands across a soil water availability gradient in the Boland area of the Western Cape

Chikumbu, Vavariro 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MscFor)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of mid rotation fertilizer application on leaf area index (LAI), basal area and volume increment in thinned Pinus radiata stands on the most common soils of the Boland region in the Western Cape. The study was conducted on a range of sites in the Boland region of MTO Forestry Company, chosen to reflect the two most common soil types and a water availability gradient in each soil type. A factorial combination of fertilizer treatments with three levels each for nitrogen (N) at 0, 100 and 200 kg ha-1 and phosphorus (P) at 0, 50 and 100 kg ha- 1 was used. This design was replicated four times across a gradient of water availability for each of the two common soil groups, forming a complete trial series. All replications were laid out in P. radiata stands that had received their mid-rotation thinning prior to treatment implementation. LAI, diameter at breast height and height measurements as well as foliar analysis were determined before the implementation of the study in 2008 and then subsequently at predetermined intervals in 2009 and 2010. Leaf area index and stem volume increment were measured in order to evaluate the influence on growth efficiency. LAI was estimated using the gap fraction method with the use of a ceptometer. Volume increment was calculated using diameter and height measurements and basal area was calculated by means of diameter measurements. The abovementioned growth responses were then used to determine the effect of increased nutrient availability on stand growth. There were no significant interactions detected between any of the factors, N, P and water availability class in their effect on LAI, basal area, volume increment and growth efficiency. LAI increment responded significantly to N and P in the first year but only to P in the second year after treatment. Significant basal area responses to N and P were recorded in the second but not the first year. This might have been due to the fact that trees had to re-build their canopies after thinning before a basal area response could be obtained. For the variables where an analysis of total growth response over the two year period was done, basal area increment and volume increment significantly responded to the application of nitrogen but not to phosphorus. Growth efficiency was not significantly influenced by either nitrogen or phosphorus over the full two year monitoring period. Water availability class consistently and significantly influenced basal area increment, volume increment and growth efficiency over the two year period as well as during year one and year two. The best responses generally occurred as a result of the additive effects of N and P. The growth response did not remain the same across the water availability classes. The wetter sites tended to have greater responses than the drier sites. Although these are still early results, the growth responses could be attributed to an increase in LAI. Nutrient analysis through vector analysis indicated that the additional N and P from fertilizer application were taken up by the trees thereby resulting in greater LAI and increased stem wood production.

Quality assessment of agricultural water used for fertigation in the Boland district

Mgcoyi, Bulelani William January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech. (Agriculture)) -- Central University of Technology, Free state, 2011 / Quality assessment of agricultural water used for fertigation in the Boland district. The study was undertaken to determine the influence of seasonal changes on the water quality (chemical and microbial analyses) of five different rivers in the Boland. The data was collected in the five most important water sources that are used for irrigation purposes in the district, i.e. Berg river, Eerste river, Klapmuts River, Klippies river and Krom river. The samples were collected from all sites once every three weeks for a period of six months. The sampling was carried out during specific periods in summer (December, 2006 to February, 2007) and winter (June to August, 2007). The results of the study showed that Klapmuts river recorded the highest levels of chloride and iron, especially in summer. However, chloride levels were far below the levels set by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Results obtained from this study show the presence of pathogens in some of the rivers assessed which may have resulted from the leaching of these pathogens from nearby agricultural land, livestock watering or informal settlements in the catchment areas. The bigger rivers recorded low levels of micro-elements and this might have been affected by winter rainfall. In the Berg River, many sources of nitrate pollution seem to be present in the catchment area. The levels of iron in all the rivers assessed were far more than the levels set by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry in all rivers assessed and these might be due to the pH levels and interaction between the rivers and seasons. Iron and manganese levels should be kept low as this may cause production problems by blocking irrigation drippers. The water samples tested for bacterial and fungal density showed Klapmuts and Eerste rivers were positive for Phytophthora cinnamomi during winter. Phytophthora citricola and Phytophthora cactorum were detected in the Klapmuts and Klippies rivers in summer. The Berg-, Klapmuts-, Krom- and Eerste rivers tested positive for species of the genera Pythium and Fusarium. Similar organisms were detected in the Eerste river mainly during summer on the fourth sampling date, while Krom river only tested positive for Pythium during summer. The total bacterial and algal density differed significantly between the seasons and was highest in winter. This might be due to high rain water influx and efflux and/or moist and aerobic conditions and air temperature. There is an increased need for farmers to sterilize feeding water (chlorination) due to high microbial count.

A critical analysis of the strategic management of Boland PKS

Burger, Jaco 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With each passing year and the intensification of competition, strategic management becomes more important. In an ever-changing business environment, management, and especially strategic management, becomes increasingly crucial. This empirical study attempts to conduct a literature study of strategic management in order to develop a strategic planning model. A simplified model is proposed as a framework on which a practical application can be made. Boland PKS, a division of the Board of Executors, has been elected as the organisation to whose strategic management the model will be applied. Boland PKS will be applied to the model in an effort to accept or reject the following statement of the problem: The author is of the opinion that strategic planning is not being applied in Boland PKS. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Jaarliks toenemende kompetisie maak strategiese bestuur toenemend belangrik in hedendaagse besigheid.
