This work focuses on the development of a reliable numerical model for investigating the bone-conduction of sound in the human head. The main challenge of the problem is the lack of fundamental
knowledge regarding the transmission of acoustic energy through non-airborne pathways to the
cochlea. I employed a fully coupled model based on the acoustic/elastic interaction problem with a detailed
resolution of the cochlea region and its interface with the skull and the air pathways. The problem was simulated via hp-finite element approximation, employing a hybrid mesh (tetrahedral, prismatic and pyramidal elements) to better capture the geometrical features of the head. The numerical results thus obtained provide

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the performance-intensity function for spondees delivered via bone conduction (using the Radioear E-72 and Pracitronic KH-70) differed from the performance-intensity function for air conduction (using TDH-39 earphones). A secondary consideration addressed in this study was the comparison of the discrimination scores using the three transducers. Performance-intensity functions for spondee thresholds were calculated on 12 normal hearing subjects using two bone conduction vibrators, the Radioear B-72 and Pracitronic KH-70, and TDH-39 earphones. Results indicated that there was no significant difference between the performance-intensity function of speech via bone conduction as compared to speech via air conduction. Also, there was no difference between the Radioear b-72 and Pracitronic KH-70 bone conduction vibrators. Discrimination scores also gave similar results between transducers. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the use of speech tests, such as the speech reception threshold and discrimination tests, which were originally designed for use via air conduction can safely be used for bone conduction.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aids BAHA and Quality of Life QoL In Adults. A Systematic Review.Faisal, Rabia January 2022 (has links)
According to the WHO world health organization, more than five percent of the world population needs rehabilitation for hearing loss, HL. Hearing loss is known to cause many negative health implications, including cognitive decline, and social isolation. The present study has been conducted to find out the impact of Bone anchored hearing aids, BAHA, on the Quality of Life in Adults, for this purpose, a systematic literature review was carried out among three databases, CINAHL, Pub Med, and Web of Science to identify the most relevant journal articles published over the last ten years between January 2012 till January 2022. There were seven studies selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study results were synthesized, and it was found that overall BAHA shows a positive impact on Quality-of-Life QoL among its users. It has been recommended that future research should be carried out with longitudinal studies and large study samples to establish the authenticated relationship between BAHA and its positive impact on Quality of Life

The escalating cost of claims for Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) supports the need to review and upgrade current hearing conservation practices.
The rise of these escalating costs and the need to protect the military personnel when training in extreme noise conditions has initiated an engineering investigation within the Department of National Defence (DND) and in collaboration with the University of Ottawa, to review the existing standards in the field of hearing protection test and evaluation, to propose technical recommendations and to identify the possible technical problems and gaps impacting the quality of the existing procedures.
This study dealt with the estimation of the protection capability of Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) in the case of high-level impulse noise from small firearms weapons that are a particularly damaging source of noise in military environments, representing an important cause of NIHL.
Testing and evaluation based on a system engineering approach have been used in this work introducing:
- A new testing approach, based on ANSI/ASA S12.42-2010, for testing HPDs when the impulse noise is generated by a small firearm; - A new evaluation approach for HPD performance, introducing a characterization approach using a sub-band analysis for dealing with impulse noise generated by a small firearm.
The effectiveness of HPDs, taking into account the physiological human limitations induced by Bone Conduction (BC), is computed by using an innovative method attempting to better prevent the risk of NIHL when using small firearms.
