The purpose of this study was to evaluate by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) the region that offers larger bone volume, the ramus or chin region. Were selected according to the criteria of inclusion and non inclusion, 100 CBCT scans of individuals aged 18-89 years old males (50) and female (50) with need for surgery for autogenous grafting, belonging to a particular clinical CT. The studies were evaluated by two trained radiologists in the program OsiriX ® 4.1.2V to quantify bone volume of potential donor regions, which were evaluated by different guidelines, defining the potential volume of the donor site. Further evaluated by statistical analysis Student's t and Tukey's test, that comproove statistically significant differences (p < 0,05) between the evaluations of the same region by different methods. With the largest potential donor found in the chin region, reaching an volume average of 1,59 cm3 against 1,07 cm3 the ramus region

Model for precise detection of bone edgesRamesh, Visvanathan 06 February 2013 (has links)
A mathematical model which is used to detect bone edges accurately is described in this thesis. This model is derived by assuming the X-ray source to be a square region. It is shown that for an ideal X-ray source (point source), the bone edge lies exactly at the location of maximum first derivative of the imaged object's transmission function. However, for the non-ideal case, it is shown that the bone edge does not lie at the maximum first derivative location. Also, it is shown that an offset can be calculated from the edge parameters. The Marr- Hildreth edge detector is used to detect the initial estimates for edge location. Precise estimates are obtained by using the facet model. The offset is then calculated and applied to these estimates. / Master of Science

Computerized Analysis of Radiograph Images of Embedded Objects as Applied to Bone Location and Mineral Content MeasurementBuckner, Richard L. 08 1900 (has links)
This investigation dealt with locating and measuring x-ray absorption of radiographic images. The methods developed provide a fast, accurate, minicomputer control, for analysis of embedded objects. A PDP/8 computer system was interfaced with a Joyce Loebl 3CS Microdensitometer and a Leeds & Northrup Recorder. Proposed algorithms for bone location and data smoothing work on a twelve-bit minicomputer. Designs of a software control program and operational procedure are presented. The filter made wedge and limb scans monotonic from minima to maxima. It was tested for various convoluted intervals. Ability to resmooth the same data in multiple passes was tested. An interval size of fifteen works well in one pass.

Non-invasive assessment of trabecular bone structural anisotropy: relevance to mechanical anisotropy.Badiei, Arash January 2008 (has links)
Although there are now many theories describing empirical relationships between strength properties of bone and various explanatory variables, the need for improved non-invasive diagnostic techniques to assess bone fragility is of core importance in clinical problems such as osteoporosis. The aim of this thesis was to develop non-invasive radiological methods to assess trabecular bone architecture. Measures of structural anisotropy and bone structure from X-ray or radiological projections have been developed. The first measure, the projected mean intercept length (PMIL), allows extraction of the total bone surface (BS/TV) and the mean intercept length (MIL) from projections of trabecular structure. The second measure, the line projection deviation (LPD), is a technique that quantifies the preferential alignment of trabecular bone from projections of the trabecular structure. Hence, in combination, the PMIL and LPD allow non-invasive extraction of BS/TV and more detailed preferential alignment from projections of the trabecular structure. In this thesis the PMIL and LPD are introduced and their properties explored. The PMIL and LPD are used to examine the anisotropy and architectural properties of a number of human vertebral body trabecular bone samples. When used in combination with clinical densitometry, these measures improve explanation of the variance in strength, elastic modulus and toughness of vertebral body trabecular bone samples by up to 40% when compared to densitometric values alone. While µCT can provide the information needed to access trabecular architecture, it cannot be used in clinical settings since its high radiation dose makes it only applicable to small objects ex-vivo. At present, clinically available CT does not provide sufficient resolution to resolve trabecular structures. Thus, the methods described in this thesis will allow estimates of structural parameters from plain X-rays, providing for the first time, the possibility of clinical use of such estimates. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1311218 / Thesis (Ph.D.) -- School of Medical Sciences, 2008
