‘OK,’ IT’S AN AGE THING: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MILLENNIAL AND BOOMER DISCOURSE

Unknown Date (has links)
Assigning stereotypical behaviors and traits associated with young people—selfabsorbed, narcissistic, lost, technologically dependent, disrespectful, financially unstable, etc.—to Millennials have become common practice in popular media and colloquial discourse and are not without consequence. Although the contemporary discourses circulating through society appear to be characteristically Millennial, similar discourses have historically appeared in conversations surrounding preceding generations. This thesis uses five popular culture case studies that capture the zeitgeist of both young Boomers and Millennials to compare discourses and critically examines the overlapping references between age groups and generational categories. This research also aims to bring visibility to the relevance of age getting lost amidst discourses about generations. Using textual analysis via discursive formations, this project reveals the reproduction of dominant power structures among generational discourses and poses implications to those power structures. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (MA)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

A (des) construção da caminhabilidade: o boom imobiliário e a produção do espaaço público em Goiânia (2007-2015) / The (de)construction of the walkability: the real state boom and the creation of urban public spaces in Goiânia (2007-2015)

Romacheli, Angelica de Amorim 06 June 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to think about the urban public spaces in city of Goiânia, main city in State of Goiás. Specifically, the text treats on the created public realm as a remainder from real state companies\' agency, between the years 2007 and 2015, period called by researchers as \"real state boom\". In this run, incorporating companies, vastly more capitalized and competitive, developed strategies for engineering design to create literally concepts of sites and lucrative addresses. Creating localizations increases profits to companies, once the agencies could search for large and far lands. Seeking this type of realty, far from urban community facilities, it is possible to find out cheap and/or large places. Consequently, large realties mean more housing units, making possible that companies get more profitability by unit. In this way, the result is housing environment, horizontal or vertical, located in suburbs, based on the self-segregation and the fragmentation. Thus, these spaces become a \"shapeless\" and ungrateful location, serving merely the cars circulating. The perspective, wherewith this process of deterioration will be analyzed, is the walkability. Thereunto, the empirical research was chosen. City areas - which have performed the variety of real state market strategies and also have permitted distinct reshuffles to design some public spaces - were selected and, from them, three samples, different from each other. After that, a reference sample of a sector was taken: a walkable sector of community. Added to this, a last sample was chosen: a neighborhood where large retailer layouts are clustered and, besides, it is possible to observe the same conditions as in commercial companies. Furthermore, some studies with similar approaches were analyzed to give us a role of urban elements that acts on the walkability. From this, a methodology of analysis was elaborated and, after applied to the five samples, this methodology enables a knowledge more detailed about the impacts from proliferation of fortified enclaves and its relevance to a public space with quality and pursuant to a city that prioritizes a transport by foot.

Couplages température-endommagement-perméabilité dans les sols et les roches argileux / Effect of temperature on damage and permeability of clayey soils and rocks

Monfared, Mohammad 01 April 2011 (has links)
However the excavation of underground galleries creates a damaged zone (EDZ). The effect of the damage zone on the transport properties of the geological barrier has been widely studied. Within the framework of the TIMODAZ European project, emphasis has been put on the effect of temperature. As a partner of this project, the current work is performed to investigate the coupling effect between temperature, damage and permeability on Boom clay and Opalinus clay through an experimental study. View to the experimental difficulties related to the low permeability materials, a new hollow cylinder triaxial cell with short drainage path specifically designed to study the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of very low permeable materials is developed during this work. The tests and the numerical analysis show that the short sample drainage path reduces significantly the time needed to resaturate an initially unsaturated sample and it also permits to achieve drained conditions (i.e. negligible excess pore pressure during testing) with a higher loading rate. For Boom clay, the effect of the pore water thermal pressurisation on a sample with a pre-existing shear band is investigated. The undrained heating under shear stress decreases the effective stress on the sample which leads to its failure. An existing failure plane in the sample behaves like a preferential weakness plane which can be reactivated by pore water thermal pressurisation. The estimated shearing resistance along the sheared plane is smaller than that of the intact material. For the Opalinus claystone, drained heating on a saturated sample shows that this claystone behaves like a slightly overconsolidated material (thermo-elasto-plastic behaviour) with transition from expansion to contraction at 65°C. The decrease of the permeability of the sample before and after the heating-cooling cycles proves the irreversible volumetric compaction of the sample. The undrained heating test on the Opalinus claystone induces an excess pore pressure in the sample which cannot be explained by the difference between the free water thermal expansion coefficient and that of the solid matrix. The back analysis of the results shows a higher value for the water thermal expansion coefficient as compared to that of free water. Permeability measurements at 25°C and 80°C on samples previously damaged by deviatoric loading show no significant effect of damage on the permeability of the samples. These results confirm the good sealing capacity of both clays at various temperatures

Experimental Characterization and Analysis of Simple Residential Structures Subjected to Simulated Sonic Booms

Haac, Thomas Ryan 07 June 2010 (has links)
Commercial aircraft are subject to noise regulations imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Currently, the FAA limits overland flight of supersonic airplanes due to the negative effect of the sonic boom on communities. The annoyance produced by the impulsive signature of sonic booms, particularly indoors, cannot exceed that of the broadband, low-overpressure noise produced by subsonic airplanes for the restriction to be lifted. Therefore, the ability to understand and accurately reproduce the acoustic response of a sonic boom is important for psychoacoustic classification of their tolerability within residences. This thesis presents and interprets results of the propagation and transmission of simulated sonic booms incident on wood-framed structures. The testing environment, sonic boom simulation method, and associated instrumentation are described. The effects of the traveling blast on the structure are investigated through pressure loading and structural response measurements. The ensuing interior acoustic responses for several different configurations are presented, including the effects of room cavity interaction and exposure of the room cavities to the traveling wave through an open door. Calculated transfer functions between the interior acoustic response and the free-field incident wave are computed to assess the extent to which wood-framed buildings transmit energy to their cavities. In all cases tested, significant transmission of the sonic boom's low frequency content into the structures was apparent through direct apertures and the excitation of structural components. The data show that sonic booms provide significant excitation of structural and acoustic modes that drives the interior acoustic response in residential structures. / Master of Science
