Polymorfismus v genu MDR1 u border kolií

Trýznová, Alena January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is focused on polymorphism of MDR1 gene c.-6-180T>G, which causes phenobarbital resistance. Phenobarbital is one of the most commonly used drug against epilepsy, which is one of the most common neurological disease in dogs with frequency between 0,5-5 % according to breed. This mutation has so far been detected only in the border collie breed, which manifests up to 30 percent resistance to the treatment of epilepsy. In the text is subscribed border collie breed, dog epilepsy and gene MDR1. Methodical part is focused on detection of the polymorphism in model population of 82 dogs. The results agree with previous studies and confirm frequency of mutant alleles 32 % within the population.

Il territorio dell'esistenza : Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001) / Le territoire de l'existence : Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001) / The territory of the existence : Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001)

Grassano, Matteo 29 January 2018 (has links)
The PhD Thesis is devoted to the study of the work and the poetics of Francesco Biamonti (1928-2001). It proposes a critical analysis showing the connections between the writing of the author, in both its themes and its stylistic choices, and its underlying cultural influences. Biamonti’s novels appear as an attempt to express his personal vision of the world and the human condition, which the Italian writer developed as autodidact all along his life. Framing this vision cannot ignore the considerations of the author about the Ligurian west territory, represented through its twentieth century transformations and its contemporary topics. Thus, the juxtaposition of the words territory and existence in the title suggests the first key to read this work by.The PhD Thesis is articulated in three main parts. The first part, through the study of the narrative space, analyses Biamonti’s reflections on the Mediterranean and European history; moreover, it contains the literary mechanisms and the mythopoietic processes characterizing the representation of the Ligurian territory and the French “Elsewhere” in the novels of the author. The second part is concerned with the study of the characters and, in light of a series of philosophical readings, it examines Biamonti’s conception of the human reality and existence. The third and final part explores the idea of artistic creation and highlights specific characteristics

An Empirical Study of Instance Hardness

Smith, Michael Reed 20 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Most widely accepted measures of performance for learning algorithms, such as accuracy and area under the ROC curve, provide information about behavior at the data set level. They say nothing about which instances are misclassified, whether two learning algorithms with the same classification accuracy on a data set misclassify the same instances, or whether there are instances misclassified by all learning algorithms. These questions about behavior at the instance level motivate our empirical analysis of instance hardness, a measure of expected classification accuracy for an instance. We analyze the classification of 57 data sets using 9 learning algorithms. Of the over 175000 instances investigated, 5% are misclassified by all 9 of the considered learning algorithms, and 15% are misclassified by at least half. We find that the major cause of misclassification for hard instances is class overlap, manifested as outliers and border points which can be exacerbated by class skew. We analyze these causes and show to what extent each leads to misclassifications, both in isolation and jointly. 19.8% of all misclassified instances are outliers; 71.3% are border points; 21% belong to a minority class. We also find that 91.6% of all outliers and 38.3% of all border points are misclassified whereas only 3.5% of instances without class overlap are misclassified. We propose a set of heuristics to predict when an instance will be hard to correctly classify. Additionally, we analyze how different learning algorithms perform on tasks with varying degrees of outliers, border points and class skew.

State Strategy for Migration Management: Canada's Two Temporary Foreign Worker Programs, The Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program & The Live-in Caregiver Program

Reed, Austina J. 09 1900 (has links)
<p> This study applies an IPE approach to examine the economic conditions, motivations and interests which have driven the Canadian government and two sending countries, Mexico and the Philippines, to accept the terms and conditions of a regulatory framework encouraging short-term labour migration between them. The features of program development which underpin the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) and the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) have not been compared side by side. Nor have the two programs been compared for the relationship that has developed over the years between the Canadian government and the two sending governments of Mexico and the Philippines. The study's core research question asks how the process of regulating cross-border labour migration works and how it is coordinated between two or more governments that form part of a migration system.</p> <p> An important research finding that emerges from the comparison is the categorization of different types of migration systems. I argue that the SAWP and LCP differ in how they are administered because relations between the various actors differ. Furthermore, what defines these relationships is the set of geopolitical and economic interests that each government carries when it negotiates the regulation of cross-border labour migration. Findings suggest that the geopolitical and economic imperative which has driven the SAWP's development is not the same for the LCP.</p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Möjligheter och problem för en cross-borderregion – En fallstudie av Greater Copenhagen and Skåne Committee

Silic, Tea, Stigertsson, Alexander January 2016 (has links)
Regional planning has become an important part of today’s politics. As a result of the ongoing globalization municipalties and cities now have to form partnerships accross borders to be able to compete for resources, residents and businesses establishments. Oresund collaboration was initiated when Denmark and Sweden formed The Oresund Committee, which today is called Greater Copenhagen and Skane Committee. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate what the cooperation actually means to three selected municipalties in the region, how the region is perceived by media and how it is portrayed in planning documents. This has been done through a case study.Since the region is a cross-border region it struggles with problems that a region located in one country does not. The biggest issue that we have identified has to do with different laws and economic systems that exists within the region. This has affected the many residents living in Oresund, especially those who travel across the border on a daily basis. Another problem that has arisen concerns the undefined identity that is created by politicians and authorities, which becomes a problem when the citizens do not perceive themselves as a part of the mutual region. Furthermore we have identified an issue that affects the matter of democracy and the recently established border controls. This issue has become apparent due to low priority from the government and the politicians of the capital of Sweden. There are elements that demonstrate that some people consider Stockholm to be the most important actor for Sweden’s future growth, which leads to unequal distribution of power. This brings us to the final problem, dealing with the decision to impose border controls between Sweden and Denmark. The border controls have proven to be very costly for the society and for the travellers who lose a lot of time because of the inflexibility of the way the border controls are carried out. In the final section of this bachelor thesis we discuss what needs to be accomplished to be able to create a better future for Greater Copenhagen and Skane Committee.

The Book of New Fish

Angus, Callum 01 January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Deep in the library stacks, two transgender men unearth a moldy copy of the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey of 1857. The survey, in its dispassionate cataloging of every plant and animal unfortunate enough to be caught in the crosshairs of Manifest Destiny, energizes the nameless narrator and his lover Emilio to pen an alternative field guide to the border. The Book of New Fish rewrites the history of the Rio Grande through the eyes of its fish who—like the two trans men—bear witness to the violent beauty of living in between countries, identities, and genders. Covering ground from the Spanish conquistadors to invasive species and unraveling their relationship in the process, the project demands increasingly steep sacrifices of the main characters as they try to figure out why we hurt those we love most in the search for identity and belonging.

Influence of Pre-service Teachers' Beliefs about Diversity on Science Teaching and Learning

Brand, Brenda R. 28 April 1998 (has links)
The influences of the background experiences of five pre-service Science teachers on their beliefs about diversity were the focus for this study. These individuals were followed throughout their teacher preparation program. The data for this study consisted of interviews, conducted before and after entering the field. Data also consisted of any relevant written assignments. The data for this study were analyzed according to emerging themes, depicting initial beliefs and any changes in the beliefs occurring over time. The results of this study were organized into vignettes, telling each story from before and after the students entered the program. Three themes emerged from an analysis and interpretation of the vignettes: (1) Early life experiences shaped the pre-service teachers' sense of identity and influenced their beliefs on diversity, (2) Experiences with diversity influenced pre-service teachers' philosophy of teaching, and (3) Experiences with diversity during the teacher preparation program challenged or confirmed pre-service teachers' preexisting beliefs. The implications from this study suggest that pre-service teachers need challenging experiences in diverse classroom settings that will promote an expansion of their beliefs, enabling them to cross cultural borders. / Ph. Characterization of methionine transport in bovine intestinal brush border membrane vesicles

Dahl, Geoffrey Eliot January 1987 (has links)
Characteristics of methionine uptake by brush border membrane vesicles of bovine small intestine were investigated. Alkaline phosphatase marked the brush border membrane fraction obtained through differential centrifugation followed by a sucrose gradient. This preparation yielded a 10-fold enrichment of activity over homogenate. Methionine uptake was found to be into an osmotically active space. A binding constant of 75.4 pmol/mg membrane protein was determined. A significant (p<.05) sodium stimulation of methionine uptake was observed. This indicated active (energy-dependent) transport in addition to the diffusive component of intravesicular mention accumulation. Decreasing the pH of buffer medium significantly (p<.05) depresses methionine transport. A Km = .114 mM and VMAX = 56.5 pmol/s/mg membrane protein were ascertained for methionine. / M.S.

Sources and Transport of Black Carbon at the United States-Mexico Border near San Diego-Tijuana

Shores, Christopher 08 June 2011 (has links)
At international border areas that suffer from poor quality, assessment of pollutant sources and transport across the border is important for designing effective air quality management strategies. As part of the Cal-Mex 2010 field campaign at the US-Mexico border in San Diego and Tijuana, we measured black carbon (BC) concentrations at three locations in Mexico and one in the United States. The measurements were intended to support the following objectives: to characterize the spatial and temporal variability in BC concentrations and emissions in the border region, to identify potential source areas of BC emissions, and to characterize the cross-border transport of BC and assess its impact on local and regional air quality. BC concentrations at Parque Morelos, the campaign's supersite, averaged 2.1 ?g m?? and reached a maximum value of 55.9 ?g m??. This average value is comparable to levels in large American cities like Los Angeles and similarly sized Mexican cities like Mexicali. The maximum value occurred near midnight, and similar incidents were observed on nearly half of the overnight monitoring periods. BC and carbon monoxide (CO) were strongly correlated at the Mexican sites. The BC/CO ratio was ~3 times higher in Tijuana than in Mexico City, suggesting that gasoline-powered vehicles in Tijuana emit more BC than is typical or that diesel vehicles comprise a relatively high proportion of the vehicle fleet. Tijuana's emissions of BC are estimated to be 380-1470 metric tons yr??. BC measurements were used in conjunction with modeled wind fields to simulate forward and backward particle trajectories. Generally, BC in Tijuana appears to originate locally, as backward simulations showed transport from the US into Mexico at only one site. The majority of the trajectory analyses indicate that there is often transport from Tijuana into the US, crossing the border in a northeasterly direction to the east of San Diego-Tijuana and sometimes as far east as Imperial County at the eastern edge of California. These results suggest that any air quality management strategies considering BC should account for contributions from the border region, as BC is chemically inert in the atmosphere and can travel up to thousands of kilometers. / Master of Science
