Negro applicants to a child guidance clinic: an exploratory study of a year's intake

Tobkin, Dorothy January 1958 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / This study undertakes to explore ths general characteristics of a year's intake of Negro applicants to a child guidance clinic, for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of the socio-economic conditions of this group, the ways in which they arrive at a child guidance clinic, the reasons for which they come and the results of their initial contact. The study was conducted in the Child Guidance Clinic of the Boston City Hospital. This clinic draws a group of negroes sufficiently large to provide scope for an exploration of the background characteristics, the referral routes and the presenting problems of the group. A thorough description of the findings in these categories should result in increased knowledge about the salient features of this group, and some i of the inter-connections among these features. In addition, case-disposition will be examined because disposition is the end-point of intake service, and service is the ultimate concern of social work research.

The role of the pastor with preschool children.

Flinchbaugh, James Edward January 1951 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / The present inquiry was initiated to examine the relationships of the pastor with preschool children, and to show their significance for the religious development of children in order to arrive at specific conclusions concerning the role of the pastor in serving them. The inquiry concerns itself with four aspects: 1) a developmental trend in the attitudes of the historic church to young children, 2) theoretical considerations concerning the religious significance of interpersonal experiences of children, 3) an exploratory survey of pastoral work among contemporary parishes, and 4) religious implications and applications of the theoretical considerations for the work of the pastor with preschool children. It is the hypothesis of this investigation that the pastor has a distinct contribution to make to the growth and development of the young child. It was the expectation of the writer before the investigation was undertaken that pastors are not sufficiently aware of the processes of religious growth in young children to implement parish programs for the religious nurture of young children. Until the needs of the young child are well-understood, any attempts ar a pastoral ministry to this age group, five years and under, may go far astray because of poorly defined objectives. Performance of English, Zulu and Sotho students on the Boston Naming test : an investigation into the items responsible for cultural bias.

Mendonca, Juliana 15 March 2012 (has links)
The Boston Naming Test (BNT) is a confrontation naming test which is used to measure naming ability. The primary purpose of this study was to identify whether cultural bias negatively affects South African’s performance on the Boston Naming Test (BNT). More specifically the study aimed to identify the exact items of the BNT on which South Africans perform poorly because of cultural bias. The research identified alternate responses given by respondents in terms of a percentage. The study further aimed to explore whether there was a significant difference in performance when comparing English, Zulu and Sotho respondents in terms of item response. This investigation also intended to discover whether being bilingual would affect South African’s performance on the BNT. Finally, the study aimed to explore whether there was a significant difference in the performance on the BNT when comparing male and female respondents. A significant difference was found between the South African and the Canadian sample in terms of item response. 40 items were revealed as problematic in a South African sample. Significant differences were found when comparing English respondents to Zulu respondents as well as when comparing Sotho respondents to English respondents. Although differences were found between male and female performance, the difference was not significant. Ultimately, no significant difference was found between monolingual and bilingual respondents.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Boston University. / The purpose of this study is to describe the OT creation concept, assess its importance, and investigate the problem of creation ex nihilo. The approach of biblical theology is made, postulating some degree of unity and validity in major OT ideas. Every passave in the OT bearing on creation is noted. The word bara is used 48 times, always of action by God only, but the word does not require the ex nihilo idea. Twelve other verbsal roots express creation. [truncated]
