The Super Bowl and Advertising: An Analysis of Firm Enhancement

Thomasson, Joshua M 01 January 2014 (has links)
This paper conducts an analysis of the short-term Firm Value Enhancement that companies experience during large-scale advertising campaigns, such as the Super Bowl. The findings suggest that these firms may experience a positive or negative return during the days after a large event, by signaling to investors and consumers the value of their firm through their advertisements. Some of the highlights include an approximately – 5% return for Super Bowl Advertisers on the Monday after the event, and underperformance during the two weeks surrounding the event.

The ideals of consciousness and conduct in Henry James's The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl

Bryer, Lynne January 1969 (has links)
The mature work of Henry James gives the fullest expression of certain ideals which I have called the ideals of consciousness and conduct. These ideals are the subject of this thesis. As they are best illustrated in the two novels The Ambassadors (1903) and The Golden Bowl (1904), I have first analysed these books in detail. Though emphasising "theme" rather than "techniques" (I make the usual working distinction while recognising its limitations), I have also attempted to show how intimately James's technique is related to his exploration of consciousness and conduct. In Part Three I have tried to gather up ideas arising from the analyses of The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl to compare them, expand on them and generalise from them. In this way I have arrived at conclusions that may help to interpret mature vision of James.

The works were conducted in the "ex situ" biological collection of Anacardium humile A. St.-Hil. and in the laboratory of genetics and molecular biology, both at the Universidade Federal de Goiás – Regional Jataí. For the first study, flowering characteristics of the accessions of the collection were evaluated. The results were submitted to the descriptive and multivariate analysis of the genetic diversity. For the second and third study, physical and chemical characteristics of cashew apples and cashew nuts (from 5 to 15 per access) were evaluated. In the second, the results were submitted to the descriptive analysis for each access and Pearson correlation among the variables measured. In the third, besides the descriptive analysis for the variables, the results were submitted to the multivariate analysis. Diversity was observed with bases on the attributes of flowering and fruiting, where the UPGMA dendrogram and Tocher method were efficient to demonstrate this diversity. The accessions from Serranópolis presented high values of number of flowers and percentage of flowering acess. Access 1 presented higher values for cashew nut size and higher access and vitamin C content of cashew apple, with vitamin C being significantly correlated with epidermal and pulp tonality, soluble solids content and cashew nut length.

Efeito tigela em linhas de produção: novas evidências computacionais / Bowl phenomenon in assembly lines: new computational evidence

Pedro Belin Castellucci 17 December 2014 (has links)
Assembly lines are large-scale production systems with great value in modern industrial systems. Perfomance measures and strategies have been proposed in order to evaluate and improve the efficiency of numerous assembly line configurations. This dissertation focuses on serial unpaced (stochastic) assembly lines. In particular, the interest of this study is in the effect of deliberately unbalacing the line in a specific manner in order to enhance its performance, a strategy that exploits the so-called Bowl phenomenon. The literature has studied this phenomenon in different scenarios: buffered and unbuffered lines, different workload profiles along the line and different probabilistic task time distributions. However, none of the identified studies considers task indivisibility, an intrisic characteristic of real-world assembly line balancing problems, namely, each task has to be executed in a single station. This is the main gap explored in this study. Thereunto, we use recently proposed instances for the Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem (SALBP) and some Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem (ALWABP) instances, which are solved using mixed integer programming models capable of inducing bowl workload profiles. These solutions are used as input in a stochastic simulation model, also presented in this study. Overall, the results show that SALBP and ALWABP solutions may benefit from the Bowl phenomenon. Furthermore, the variety of the instances considered in the experiments allows for a better generalization of the results to real-world scenarios if compared to the simplified cases previously shown in the literature.

Design kadeřnického křesla / Design of armchair for hairdressing

Nečasová, Barbora January 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims to design a modern innovative hairdresser chair. The main innovation of the proposal is seen in the new interior arrangement with a washing component as a central point. The main idea of the whole work is to design such a hairdresser chair that would supersede all other chairs normally used in hairdressing salons. All activities concerned with the hair care (washing, trimming, colouring etc.) would be done on a sole chair that would be in the case of need placed to the washing component. By reclining the chair backrest and turning the washing component a client’s hair could be easily washed (or other functions that need water tap could be done). There are several advantages within this proposal. Primarily it offers fewer chairs in hair dressing salon as well as a more variable interior. Another positive feature is that the washing component can be used more economically when it serves to more seats. Finally, the visual aspect and shape interconnection of two basic components - washing basin and hairdresser’s chair - are innovative.

The Practicality of Super Bowl Advertising for New Products and Companies

Dotterweich, Douglas, Collins, Kimberly S. 23 February 2006 (has links)
Companies that advertise during the Super Bowl can reach 40 million U.S. households with a 30-second commercial spot, but the cost can exceed $2 million. This research examines Nielsen television ratings and expenses for related commercial spots and suggests that the Super Bowl is not always the best site for introducing new companies or products to the marketplace. ANOVA test results indicate that younger companies may better affect purchase decisions by advertising more frequently during less expensive programming slots.

The Terrifying and the Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach to Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series

Hartvigsen, Ann K. 01 March 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the work of Texan painter Alexandre Hogue, and specifically how his 1930s Erosion Series, paintings of wind-ravaged farms during the Dust Bowl, promotes environmental attitudes long before America had a well developed ecological language. It analyzes the Erosion Series in the context of Hogue's personal land ethics and those of his artistic contemporaries, showing that the 1930s series strives to depict the devastation caused by both drought and aggressive farming practices. A comparison of Hogue's work to Regionalist artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood reveals that Regionalists' depictions of land during the 1930s created an unrealistic portrayal of American farms with eternal abundance. In contrast, Hogue's series explores man's relationship to land and shows how that relationship is often destructive rather than constructive. In many ways, Hogue's work is much more in line with works by FSA photographers and filmmakers who, similar to Hogue, imaged more realistic depictions of Midwestern farms at the time. Ultimately, this thesis asserts that paintings, and the fine arts in general, are an important step to a more environmentally minded future—a future Alexandre Hogue sought to promote through nine ecologically charged works.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to separate and identify the lipid constituents preserved in the matrix of a BRB sherd. Lipid biomarkers were recovered including long-chain n-alkanes, n-alkenes, palmitic wax monoesters, fatty acids and n-alcohols characteristic of beeswax. In addition to two disaccharides, cholesterol and β-sitosterol as contaminants were retrieved by solvent soluble extraction from a number of different locations from the ceramic matrix of the analysed sherd.
