Compreendendo que, em geral, os membros do IHGB foram também participantes ativos na política do Brasil Imperial, este trabalho tem por objetivo principal considerar que aquilo que foi produzido por eles possuiria marcas de referenciais e idéias daquela esfera no período entre 1838 e 1889. Assim, explora como modificações de interpretação ocorridas em temáticas do passado - especialmente a colonização portuguesa - poderiam se fazer presentes ora conforme alterações nas circunstâncias e necessidades políticas (a unidade e legitimidade da nação e de seu território, a afirmação da autoridade de Pedro II, a "conciliação", as guerras platinas, a escravidão e o declínio do império) ora de acordo com o indivíduo que enunciava determinado discurso, ou defendia determinada interpretação da História. Nesse sentido demonstra que ao mesmo tempo em que se engendrava um trabalho intelectual, no qual havia espaço para indagações sobre a escrita da História, também eram condicionadas interpretações diferentes sobre o Império. Privilegiando a leitura da Revista do IHGB, foram selecionados algumas memórias compostas pelos sócios, documentos coligidos relativos à História do Brasil, e as atas das sessões realizadas periodicamente. Este material permite vislumbrar a maneira como os sócios interpretaram a história do Brasil, dando especificamente ao passado português diferentes imagens e considerações diversas: ora como figura de participação valorizada, zeloso protetor do território, ora como representante de uma Colonização mal organizada, legando ao Brasil independente diversos problemas / Abstract: In the creation of the Brazilian Institute of History and Geography (IHGB) in 1838 with the aim of constructing the national history, a project was implicated for the establishment of originality for the newly independent nation that would legitimize Brazil as a singular country. Understanding that members of IHGB were in general also active participants in the policy of Imperial Brazil, this papers main objective is to consider what was produced by those members of IHGB has marks of reference and ideas from that area of politics in the period between 1838 to 1889. Thus, it explores how changes of interpretation in themes of the past - especially Portuguese colonization - could be present as alterations in the political circumstances occur (the unity and rightfulness of the nation and its territory, the affirmation of the authority of Pedro II, the "Conciliation" politics, the wars in Prata River area, slavery and the downfall of the Empire); or according to the individual who enunciate certain speech or defended his own particular interpretation of history. In this sense, the paper shows that at the same time IHGB engendered an intellectual work, in which there was room for questioning the adequacy of the writing of history, and different interpretations about the Empire were also conditioned. Giving preference to the reading of the Journal of IHGB, some memoirs made by the members, documents relating to the history of Brazil collected by them, and extracts from the minutes of the meetings held periodically were selected for the study. This material provides a glimpse of how members interpreted the history of Brazil, specifically giving the Portuguese past different images and different considerations: sometimes as a figure of valued participation, zealous protector of the territory; sometimes as a representative of a poorly organized colonization, bequeathing to independent Brazil several problems. Através de tal estudo, buscamos entender como os intelectuais brasileiros desse período, preocupados em criar um sentimento nacional em um Brasil, a princípio, carente de laços de união e à beira do colapso territorial, utilizaram o clima tropical para tal finalidade. Além de compreender as dificuldades de se aplicar a então noção de civilização a um país detentor de um clima considerado hostil e insalubre, muito diferente do temperado que possuía a Europa, o continente modelo para nossos "construtores da nação" / Abstract: This study aims to understand the role of climate in the construction of a brazilian national identity. The main research sources are the magazines of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute - the IHGB - in the corresponding period between the foundation of the institute's magazine - in 1839 - and the end of the Second Reign - in 1889. Through this study, we sought to understand how the Brazilian intellectuals of this period, concerned with creating a national feeling in a Brazil, in principle, lacking ties of union and on the verge of territorial collapse, used the tropical climate for this purpose. A partir do exame dos artigos e documentos publicados pela RIHGB e da exploração dos extratos das Atas das sessões, buscamos mapear o debate que se estabeleceu a propósito deste tema entre os membros do IHGB, o levantamento dos possíveis motivos das diferentes posições sobre o assunto, anotando, ainda, as concepções de história e de nação emergentes neste debate. Além dos artigos e documentos divulgados neste periódico, analisamos duas obras importantes da literatura internacional que tematizaram os loyolanos, mais especialmente Des Jésuites, de Jules Michelet e Jesuítes! de Paul Féval, juntamente com a peça O Jesuíta, de José de Alencar, mencionadas por autores estrangeiros e brasileiros, e expressivas da discussão pró ou contra aqueles personagens ocorrida no Brasil e na Europa durante o século XIX. O caminho traçado pela polêmica sobre a Companhia de Jesus no período recortado demonstrou-se sinuoso e multifacetado, pois revelou desde defesas dos religiosos - apoiando especialmente a sua atuação como catequizadores exemplares - até falas críticas ancoradas numa mitologia jesuítica que delineava os loyolanos como "conspiradores" e elementos ameaçadores para o Estado, imagem que inviabilizava a integração da Ordem Inaciana na nação. O trabalho evidencia o quanto essa discussão e seu percurso imbricaram-se em questões políticas importantes vivenciadas pelo Império, a exemplo da unificação política, as guerras no Prata e a Questão Religiosa / Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to identify and analysis the images and concepts about the Jesuits described on the pages of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB) Magazine, between the years of 1839-1886. Beginning by the examine of articles and documents published by the RIHGB and the exploitation of extracts from the records of the sections, we intend to map the debate established concerning this theme among the members of the IHGB, reasons that could explain those different views about the issue, noticing the concepts of history and nation that emerge in this debate. Besides the articles and documents published in this periodical, we have analyzed two important volumes from the international literature that has as theme the loyolans, but specially Des Jésuites, by Jules Michelet and Jesuítes!, by Paul Féval, and also the play O Jesuíta, by José de Alencar, mentioned by foreign and Brazilian authors, and expressive of the arguing for or against those characters that had place in Brazil and Europe during the 19th century. The path forged by the controversy about the Society of Jesus in the studied period demonstrated to be winding and multifaceted, because it revealed points of view that varies from defenses of the religious - mainly supporting their action as exemplars catechizers - to the critic lines anchored in a Jesuitical mythology that outlined the loyolans as "conspirators" and threatening components to the State, image that made impossible the integration of the Order of St. Ignatius into the nation. The paper makes evident how much the discussion and the journey leaded to important political issues experienced by the Empire, taking as an example the political unification, the wars at the Prata and the "Religious Matter" / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História
