The Brevard Chronicles: Short Stories

Dull, Joshua 01 January 2015 (has links)
America has a long history of making promises it can't keep, the most accessible buzz word for such promises being, "the American Dream", where everyone will enjoy some level of affluence and assimilate into the proverbial "melting pot" so long as they work hard and follow predetermined rules set by the power structure. In this model American lifestyle, the spiritual essence of humans is buried by the materialistic drive of capitalism, which drives us farther apart and alienates us from our neighbors. Yet in the mid 2000s, in the aftermath of some of the country's worst disasters, this power structure began to crumble. As with any transition, those with stake in the power structure suffered, which was virtually everyone in America at the time. Yet regardless of what they suffered, they found themselves still alive, still breathing. This proved something existed beyond the American dream, something more spiritual and intangible. The aim of these stories is to explore the lives of those left in the wake of the initial post9/11 economic collapse of Brevard County. Dubbed the "Space Coast," it stood as a pinnacle for the lofty promises of the American dream and a staple of its subsequent collapse. The following stories render this time and place, populated not only by those who lost something during the economic failure, but the young people who'd been promised a bright future and watched it ebb away before their eyes.

Stormwater Infiltration thru Sewer Lines in Brevard County, Florida

Stubbe, Robert Earl 01 January 1976 (has links) (PDF)
This is a broad study of stormwater infiltration and inflow effects on two sewer systems with an equivalent size for comparison in Brevard County, Florida. The systems are Rockledge, which is located on the highest ground in the area, and Cocoa Beach, which is located down in the local water table. Rainfall data, sewage flow, quality, and flow rates were collected from the Brevard Public Health Department, Cocoa Beach and Rockledge sewage Plants, weather stations, and the Cocoa Water plant. The data indicated minimum, or no infiltration thru the Rockledge wastewater collection system. However, infiltration thru the Cocoa Beach system was estimated to be 3,800 gpd/in. dia./mi. Also, the sewage collected thru Rockledge and Cocoa Beach plants averaged about 50% and 160% of the water consumed respectively.

Rhetorical Autobiography: A Narrative Analysis of Aleshia Brevard's The Woman I Was Not Born To Be: A Transsexual Journey

Tubbs , Meghan 29 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore autobiography as a rhetorical genre and to explore the personal narrative of Aleshia Brevard, an MTF (male to female) transsexual. The critical analysis employs a form of narrative criticism created from the work of several rhetorical critics. Narrative coherence is examined through looking at Brevard's arrangement of events, and narrative fidelity is examined through looking at Brevard's use of ultimate terms. This thesis suggests that the personal narratives told by transsexual individuals may constitute a previously undiscovered rhetorical genre and makes recommendations for future investigations of these narratives. / Master of Arts

The Effect of Ozone on Trihalomethane Precursors in Raw and Magnesium Treated Lake Washington Water

Kimes, James Kent 01 October 1979 (has links) (PDF)
A bench scale laboratory ozonator was constructed and determined to produce 27 mg O3/hr. A contacting system and experimental procedure was developed to approximate a mass balance of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 ppm were applied to raw and magnesium treated water from Lake Washington which is the potable water source for Melbourne, Florida. The effect of ozone on trihalomethane precursors was studied by comparing THM formation at 1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours following chlorination. The concentrations of each specie, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochlormethane and bromoform are reported. The highest 96 hour TTHM concentrations reported were 2773 ppb for the raw and 1205 ppb for the treated water. Chloroform was found to be the major specie of the THM's, averaging 80%. Ozone was found to reduce color of the raw and treated Lake Washington water. Ozone was shown to neither increase nor decrease TTHM concentrations with utilized ozone dosed up to 10.6 ppm. Increasing utilization of ozone was found to increase CHClBr2 concentrations in the raw and coagulated water. Regression equations at the 0.01 level of significance were developed for CHClBr2 formation and utilized ozone, color reduction and utilized ozone, TTHM formation and reaction time, and finally ozone production and time.
