The Effect of Ozone on Trihalomethane Precursors in Raw and Magnesium Treated Lake Washington Water

Kimes, James Kent 01 October 1979 (has links) (PDF)
A bench scale laboratory ozonator was constructed and determined to produce 27 mg O3/hr. A contacting system and experimental procedure was developed to approximate a mass balance of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 ppm were applied to raw and magnesium treated water from Lake Washington which is the potable water source for Melbourne, Florida. The effect of ozone on trihalomethane precursors was studied by comparing THM formation at 1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours following chlorination. The concentrations of each specie, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochlormethane and bromoform are reported. The highest 96 hour TTHM concentrations reported were 2773 ppb for the raw and 1205 ppb for the treated water. Chloroform was found to be the major specie of the THM's, averaging 80%. Ozone was found to reduce color of the raw and treated Lake Washington water. Ozone was shown to neither increase nor decrease TTHM concentrations with utilized ozone dosed up to 10.6 ppm. Increasing utilization of ozone was found to increase CHClBr2 concentrations in the raw and coagulated water. Regression equations at the 0.01 level of significance were developed for CHClBr2 formation and utilized ozone, color reduction and utilized ozone, TTHM formation and reaction time, and finally ozone production and time.

Stormwater Runoff from Shopping Centers

Donigan, Thomas P. 01 January 1975 (has links) (PDF)
This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did not. During a later storm a second series of samples was taken from a single location at two minute intervals. In the analysis of these samples the organic and inorganic carbon concentrations decreased with time from the beginning of the storm. However, an upturn in concentration in the final stages of runoff may be noticed.

Die kanoniese benadering van B S Childs (Afrikaans)

Claassen, Gustav Fredrich 29 January 2009 (has links)
English It is more than thirty years ago since Childs (1964) published his important article Interpretation in Faith. This article introduced the start of a new phase in OldTestamentical research. A number of other publications by Childs have since seen the light. His publications have elicited wide reaction. The canonical approach of Childs would lead to a debate that has still not abated. This study attempts to evaluate B.S. Childs' approach. It is hypothesised that the canonical approach by Childs still finds itself in the mainstream of historical criticism. Childs still uses the results of the historical critical method. This is done in contrast to the suppositions that Childs operates a-historically and to his own view that the canonical approach represents a paradigm move. The above hypothesis was developed using the following methodology: Introductory comments followed by a discussion of Childs' place in canonical research. Subsequently, autobiographical data on Childs, his most important publications and the development of his canonical approach are presented. It is followed by a discussion of his approach in view of fundamental concepts. To view Childs as a child of his time, regard must be had to the influence of his mentors on him and the similarities he shared with theologians and non-theologians. To place Childs' approach into perspective, reaction to the approach is discussed and evaluated. If Childs does not represent a paradigm move, what then is his relevance for future debate? The final chapter is a conclusion of the study where Childs' contribution is evaluated and possible implications of the canonical approach for the future are discussed. The study confirms the fact that the canonical approach still finds itself in the same cadre as the historical criticism. Childs depends on the result of the historical critical method for the implementation of his approach. He can therefore not be labelled as a-historical. Furthermore, claims that he accomplished a paradigm move can not be sustained. However, the fact that Childs made a monumental contribution to Old Testamentical scholarship can never be negated. / Thesis (DD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Old Testament Studies / unrestricted

THE INFLUENCE OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM ON LAND USE/LANDCOVER AND POPULATION DYNAMICS IN BREVARD COUNTY

Unknown Date (has links)
The Space Shuttle Program at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Brevard County made a significant impact on the aerospace industry, but what is unknown is how it impacted the county surrounding it, specifically through land use/land cover (LU/LC) change and population dynamics. This research collected land cover and population data throughout the program to determine the impact, while also creating a record of the state of LU/LC and population in Brevard County in general during the same period. Urbanization and tourism were also evaluated as possible catalysts for change when analyzing the LU/LC maps created in ArcMap and the population graphs from Microsoft Excel. Calculated area for different LU/LC classes were the main focus of this research, which led to the finding that urbanization has been a major factor of change in Brevard County through expanding residential areas rather than tourism and change from the Space Shuttle Program was centered in cities closest to the KSC. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (MS)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Interpretation of refraction and reflection stack data over the Brevard fault zone in South Carolina

Laughlin, Kenneth J. 20 November 2012 (has links)
Near surface structures across the Brevard fault zone are studied using the refraction and reflection arrivals recovered from the Appalachian Ultradeep Core Hole (ADCOH) regional seismic Line 1. In using refracted arrivals, a new processing approach is introduced that translates refracted first arrivals from multifold seismic data into a refraction stack of two-way delay time sections. Reprocessing of reflected arrivals has improved shallow reflectors and allowed better imaging of the Brevard fault zone. Following processing of refraction and reflection arrivals independently, both data sets are combined into a composite stack section. The composite stack section displays one bright refractor interpreted as the boundary between the weathered layer and high velocity crystalline rocks. This refractor is continuous in the Inner Piedmont with occasional vertical offsets. The continuity of the refractor diminishes across the Brevard fault zone. In the eastern Blue Ridge, the refractor is discontinuous with high angle truncations. On the composite stack section, the Brevard fault zone can be traced from the surface to 6 km (2 s) where it appears to splay from the Blue Ridge thrust. Different from previous interpretations, the Brevard fault zone is imaged as having both an upper and a lower boundary surface as well as a group of reflectors within the zone. This reflection package initially thickens to 2 km at 3 km depth, then thins as it reaches the Blue Ridge master decollement. The Blue Ridge thrust is as shallow as 1.5 km (0.5 s) at the northwest end of the Line l. A deeper decollement is interpreted below the Blue Ridge thrust. The depth of this deeper thrust is 3 km (1 s) at the northwest end of the line, and also joins to the Blue Ridge thrust at 6 km depth making the structures below the Brevard fault zone more complex than previously published. / Master of Science

Brevard Childs : the logic of scripture's textual authority

Driver, Daniel R. January 2009 (has links)
Brevard Childs argues for the inner logic of scripture’s textual authority as an historical reality that gives rise to the material condition by which the church apprehends and experiences God in Christ. The church’s use of (or by) scripture thus has a larger interiority: the shaped canon of scripture, Old and New Testaments, is a rule of faith which accrues authority in the church, through the vehicle of the sensus literalis. Childs’ work has been misplaced, however. Part one locates it internationally, attending to the way it has been read in English and German and finding that it has enjoyed a more patient reception in Europe than in Britain or North America. To illustrate, Childs’ definition of biblical theology is contrasted with that of James Barr. Their differences over gesamtbiblische theology involve opposite turns toward and away from Barthian dogma in biblical inquiry. Part two examines Childs on biblical reference, introducing why intertextuality is not midrashic but deictic—pointing to the res. This coincides with an understanding of the formation of biblical literature. Childs’ argument for canonical shaping is juxtaposed with Hermann Gunkel on tradition history, showing “final form” to be a deliberate inversion of form critical principles. Childs’ interest in the Bible as religious literature is then set alongside his studious confrontation of Judaism, with implications for inter-religious dialogue. Barr and Childs are compared again in part three, which frames their respective senses of indirect and direct biblical reference in terms of allegory. Both see allegory at work in the modern world under certain rules (either biblical criticism or the regula fidei). Their rules affect their articulations of trinitarian dogma. Finally, Psalm102 highlights divergences between modern and pre-modern interpreters. If scripture comprehends the present immediately, some postures of the church toward the synagogue may be excluded.

An Analysis of Race and Gender in Select Choice Programs Within Brevard County Public Schools

Doaks, Synthia 01 January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this research was to compare the student membership population proportions, by race and gender, of Brevard County Public School students with the actual participation in select choice programs offered to Brevard County public high school students. This study was based on an analysis of the scores of 1,152 eighth-grade students who received a score of 4 or 5 on the 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics and a score of 4 or 5 on the 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) reading and their participation in high school advanced academic courses. The advanced academic choice programs selected for this study consisted of the four Florida articulated accelerated college credit seeking programs: Advanced Placement (AP), Dual-Enrollment (DE), International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE). The proportion comparison consisted of student membership data and eighth-grade FCAT scores from 2007-2008 and the student membership data and high school course load data from the 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, and 2011-2012 academic school years. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests were run to analyze the proportions by race and gender of the sample groups and student membership populations. For each respective year involved in this study, there was a statistically significant difference in the race and gender proportions of the samples and the student membership populations.
