Modelling and translating future urban climate for policyHeaphy, Liam James January 2014 (has links)
This thesis looks at the practice of climate modelling at the urban scale in relation to projections of future climate. It responds to the question of how climate models perform in a policy context, and how these models are translated in order to have agency at the urban scale. It considers the means and circumstances through which models are constructed to selectively represent urban realities and potential realities in order to explore and reshape the built environment in response to a changing climate. This thesis is concerned with an interdisciplinary area of research and practice, while at the same time it is based on methodologies originating in science and technology studies which were later applied to architecture and planning, geography, and urban studies. Fieldwork consisted of participant-observation and interviews with three groups of practitioners: firstly, climate impacts modellers forming part of the Adaptation and Resilience in a Changing Climate (ARCC) programme; secondly, planners and adaptation policymakers in the cities of Manchester and London; and thirdly, boundary organisations such as the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP). Project and climate policy material pertinent to these projects and the case study cities were also analysed in tandem. Of particular interest was the common space shared to researchers and stakeholders where modelling results were explained, contextualised, and interrogated for policy-relevant results. This took the form of stakeholder meetings in which the limits of the models in relation to policy demands could be articulated and mediated. In considering the agency of models in relation to uncertainties, it was found that although generated in a context of applied science, models had a limited effect on policy. As such, the salience of urban climatic risk-based assessment for urban planning is restrained, because it presupposes a quantitative understanding of climate impacts that is only slowly forming due to societal and governmental pressures. This can be related both to the nature of models as sites of exploration and experimentation, and to the distribution of expertise in the climate adaptation community. Although both the research and policy communities operate partly in a common space, models and their associated tools operate at a level of sophistication that policy-makers have difficulty comprehending and integrating into planning policy beyond the level of simple guidance and messages. Adaptation in practice is constrained by a limited understanding of climate uncertainties and urban climatology, evident through the present emphasis on catch-all solutions like green infrastructure and win-win solutions rather than the empowerment of actors and a corresponding distribution of adequate resources. An analysis is provided on the means by which models and maps can shape climate adaptation at scales relevant for cities, based on considerations of how models gain agency through forms of encoded expertise like maps and the types of interaction between science and policy that they imply.

The built environment can inadvertently create obstacles for human cognition, emotion, and behavior when ill-designed, neglected, or poorly retrofitted. Deteriorating education facilities exemplify the lack of awareness in regard to the significant relationship between people and their environments. However, simply updating a school does not always accommodate occupant needs, especially for students who are sensitive to external stimuli. Students in behavioral schools who suffer from emotional behavioral disorder (EBD) often display adverse neurological affects from negative life experiences. Common disorders comorbid with EBD, as well as EBD itself, interferes with their ability to control and manage behavior. By identifying common challenges, the proposed behavioral school in Northampton, Massachusetts aims to support the building’s program and occupants to achieve specific goals, i.e. academic standards, and behavioral self-management. Environmental-behavior and neuropsychology principles are implemented in overarching themes including biophilic design, behavior defined space, safety, and transitions.
Strategic design elements aim to assist students relearning behavior by clearly defining which behaviors are acceptable in specific spaces within the school and by addressing common cognitions and emotions often associated with the negative behavior. These implementations range from broad environmental-behavioral-neurology principles that manifest themselves in the built environment to address place, personalization, territory, and wayfinding, down to smaller details, including strategically framed exterior views. Unlike traditional day schools, this demographic is tasked with the extremely difficult goal to restructure their consciousness from the inside out, in addition to the baseline academic requirements. As the largest physical teaching tool, the school itself assists the sensitive students and hardworking staff in their transitional journey.

Assessing Children\'s Restaurant Menus in a Health Disparate RegionOlive, Nicole Christine 05 June 2013 (has links)
Obesity is an increasing problem in the United States with 17% of youth currently classified as obese and an even higher prevalence of obesity among disadvantaged populations. The food environment may be contributing to these high rates as there has been a well documented association among increased away from home food consumption and excess adiposity, as well as evidence to support that children\'s diets are composed of a large portion of restaurant foods. The main purpose of this study is to describe the quality of restaurant food offered to children in a rural health disparate region. Two trained research assistants conducted systematic audits of all food outlets offering a children\'s menu in the Dan River region using the Children\'s Menu Assessment (CMA) tool. A composite score for each outlet for was calculated from the 29 scored items on the CMA. The total sample consisted of 137 outlets with CMA scores ranging from -4 to 9 with a mean score of 1.6+2.7. Scores were lowest in the predominantly Black block groups (0.2+0.4) when compared to the predominately White block groups (1.4+1.6) and Mixed block groups (2.6+2.4) with significantly lower scores in the predominantly Black block group than the Mixed block groups (F=4.3; p<0.05). The results of this study reveal a lack of few healthy food options available for children in this region. These findings have the potential to contribute to public health efforts in developing public policy changes or environmental interventions for the children\'s food environment in the Dan River Region. / Master of Science

"Perceived neighborhood walkability" and physical activity in four urban settings in South AfricaIsiagi, Moses 24 February 2020 (has links)
Introduction.
In Africa, studies on the associations between the perceived neighbourhood walkability and physical activity, particularly, by socio-economic status (SES) remain scarce. This study explores these associations by validating the Neighbourhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS-Africa) in an urban setting of South Africa to gain a better understanding of the construct of neighbourhood “walkability”.
Methods.
A convient sample of residents from four suburbs in urban metropole (n=52, 18-65yr, 81% women) in the Western Cape Province, South Africa (viz. Langa, Khayelitsha, Pinelands and Table View) were recruited through invitations following community gatherings and church services. Measures were obtained on perceived neighbourhood walkability, self-reported and measured physical activity and socio-economic status. Langa and Khayelitsha represented two primarily low-SES townships, whereas Pinelands and Table View represented suburbs of a higher-SES. Participants completed the 76-item (13 subscales) NEWS-Africa survey by structured interviews and reported weekly minutes of walking for transport and recreation using items from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Objective data on physical activity was collected using accelerometers, and ground-truthing was used to assess the neighbourhood environment using global information systems (GIS) in a 1000m buffer around each geocoded household. The research was carried out in three parts: 1) Evaluating the reliability and construct validity of the NEWS-Africa instrument between the two-SES groups. 2) Examining some of the walkability constructs and subscales of the NEWS-Africa instrument using GIS and ground-truthing, and the extent to which the SES of communities influenced these associations. 3) Examining the differences in self-reported physical activity (domains), measured physical activity (MVPA) when groups are divided according to SES, GIS walkability (1000m buffers) and if the data support the notion of utilitarian walking in low SES groups, irrespective of the built environment attributes.
Results.
For the combined-SES groups, the test-retest reliability indicated a good reliability with 10 out of the 13 scales of the NEWS-Africa being significantly and positively correlated. The Spearman’s correlations ranged from (rs = -0.43, p=0.00 to rs = 0.79, p=0.00). For construct validity of the NEWS -Africa instrument against self-reported physical activity, only three scales were related to walking for transport: Neighbourhood surroundings scale (rs= -0.34, p=0.01), Safety from Traffic scale (rs =0.34, p< 0.05) and people in the low-SES and combined SES perceived public bus/ train stops to be nearer than they actually were (rs =-0.50, P< 0.05). Of the 13 scales of the NEWS-Africa questionnaire, 6 were significantly correlated to GIS-measured walkability index parameters. The Roads and walking paths scale was positively associated with GIS-measured walkability (rs = 0.3), and the Stranger danger scale was negatively associated with GIS-measured walkability (rs = -0.4). When we considered GIS-measured Land use mix, 3 of the NEWS- Africa scales were correlated (For the entire sample, the scales including Places for walking, cycling and playing overall scale (rs = 0.3), and Neighbourhood surroundings scale (rs = 0.3), were positively associated respectively). Conversely, Stranger danger scale was inversely correlated (rs = -0.6). Intersection density measured with GIS was significantly and positively associated with the Roads and walking paths scale for all groups combined (rs = 0.3). For GIS-measured walkability, self-report physical and measured physical activity, there were no associations in any of the domains for self-reported physical activity within the 1000m buffer for all groups. However, for the objectively measured physical activity in the 1000m buffer, vigorous physical activity (rs = -0.39) was inversely associated with intersection density in the low-SES and moderate (rs = -0.29) and total MVPA (rs = -0.31) were inversely associated with Intersection density in the high SES.
Conclusions: The overall results of the current study across all chapters generally show a mismatch between the perceived and objectively-assessed built environment, particularly in low-income communities. Furthermore, in low-SES communities, we failed to show the expected relationships between attributes of the built environment and physical activity, suggesting that physical activity in these communities is more utilitarian in nature, and as such, may not be as influenced by aspect of the built environment. In summary, the data suggest that the environment (including crime rates, poor access to physical activity facilities and public transportation predominantly made by buses) has less of an association with physical activity in LMICs and more disadvantaged communities, where physical activity is used for utilitarian, rather than recreational purposes. This study stemmed from the need to broaden research on the relationship between the built environment and physical activity, considering walkability constructs. These findings also suggest that the definition of the construct of walkability be re-examined, in relation to low SES settings.

Project F.E.A.L.: An Investigation of Neighbourhood Built Environments and Active Living in the Canadian Armed ForcesLafontaine, Sean 13 April 2022 (has links)
Most Canadian adults do not meet recommended levels of physical activity; this phenomenon has persisted for many years and is associated with health concerns and chronic disease. These trends appear to affect Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel who have heightened mandates around physical activity. CAF operational mandates combined with these trends highlight the importance of addressing divides between expectation and reality. Traditionally the CAF has used approaches targeted to individuals to manage activity levels; however, there have been no studies exploring the relationship between the environment and activity levels among CAF personnel which has the potential to affect far more people. This dissertation examined built environments where CAF personnel live and explored the relationship between the built environment and active living among CAF personnel. There are two studies in this work. The first study developed a scale with and for the CAF and used this to examine the built environments where CAF personnel live. The results indicated a factor solution and demonstrated good-to-strong psychometric properties. Among the environments, it highlighted areas of strength and potential areas of improvement. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the built environments where CAF personnel live. The second study used data from several sources at individual and neighbourhood levels to conduct a hierarchical linear model analysis to explore the relationship between the built environment and physical activity among CAF personnel. The findings revealed information about the different relationships between active living (measured by physical activity level) of CAF personnel and individual and neighbourhood characteristics. The findings in this dissertation provide novel evidence about the relationship of the built environment and active living among CAF personnel. The aim of this research was to provide evidence and information to decisionmakers that serves to meaningfully contribute to the pursuit of the overall health and wellbeing of CAF members. The findings provided meaningful information to help guide and inform Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS) policy, programming, and resource decisions that affect CAF personnel.

"The Seat of an Alien Tyranny": Intentionality, the Mediation of Colonial Power, and Dublin's Custom HouseDigman, Edward January 2018 (has links)
This historical case study applies the theoretical and methodological framework of Kim Dovey, Ambe Njoh, and Liora Bigon to examine the ways in which a colonial administrative building, the Dublin Custom House, served as a mediator of colonial power over Ireland, and how this process was understood by the creators of the building. This investigation is a response to the inconsistent way that intentionality is discussed in existing academic literature on the relationships between built environments and societal power structures. The study found that that the creators of the Custom House had a clear and nuanced understanding of the ways the building could be used to extend cultural and political power over Ireland, within the existing political framework in the country. In contrast to the theoretical framework used, the study found that in this case, the mediation of economic and political power was understood as functioning within the existing political-economic structures of the country, rather than creating new structures. The clarity of the findings suggest that further investigations into intentionality is likely to yield informative results, and that it would be beneficial to apply the methodological and theoretical framework used in this study to other cases in the future.

Comparing Spatial Measures of the Built Environment for Health ResearchHoch, Shawn C. 07 March 2008 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Research on the association between health and the built environment often delineates environmental exposure using different spatial forms and distances surrounding points of interest, such as residences or schools. Examples from the literature include Euclidian and network buffers, administrative and census boundaries, and other arbitrary geographies, such as grid cells. There is a lack, however, of reports that describe the justifications or implications for using different methods. This research compares different forms and distances for measuring environmental variables surrounding residential locations in the context of adult walking behavior in Marion County, Indiana. Walkability index and vegetation greenness variables were evaluated within 400-meter, 1-kilometer, and 2-kilometer Euclidian and network buffers, census block groups and tracts, and 805- X 805-meter grid cells. Results of analyses using each of these methods to test walkability and greenness as correlates of self-reported walking behavior were compared. Significant differences were observed in measurements of environmental variables as a function of both size and form. There were also significant differences between spatial measure methods when measuring components of walkability and NDVI. Census geographies, widely used in the public health literature, yielded environmental variable measurements differently than did similarly-sized residence-based measure methods. In logistic regressions, the walkability index did not exhibit a significant relationship with self-reported walking behavior. NDVI exhibited a negative relationship with self-reported walking, although the relationship was reversed and significant when stratifying by residential density.

The Physical Environment and Runners' Exercise Routes: A Case of Starkville, MississippiJackson, Robert Thomas 17 May 2014 (has links)
Encouraging running for exercise can be an important part of a comprehensive strategy for making communities more attractive for healthy physical activity. In order to make communities more runnerriendly, research must identify the features of the physical environment that are important for runners. This study identified these features through five focus groups of twenty-two runners. The focus group participants discussed the places they had run within the study community and described their positive and negative qualities. These discussions were then analyzed by examining direct quotations of the discussion transcripts and by noting the amount of participants concerned about particular issues. The findings showed that the participants chose their routes based on their ability to meet their exercise needs, safety, ease of access, and potential to be a fun experience. These insights into these runners’ preferences can be used to help make communities more conducive to physical activity.

Barriers for implementation of the Environmental Load Profile and other LCA-based toolsBrick, Karolina January 2008 (has links)
The building sector is a vital part in the progress towards environmental sustainability, because of its high potential to decrease the environmental impact. However, the building industry remains one of the most critical industries for the adoption of environmental sustainability principles, because of several unique characteristics in terms of e.g. long-lived products and many stakeholders involved. Environmental assessment tools have an important role to play in implementing environmental sustainability in the building sector, as they provide a clear declaration of what are considered the key environmental considerations and also provide a way of communicating these issues. The Environmental Load Profile (ELP) is a Swedish Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based tool for the built environment, originally developed as an instrument for evaluation of the environmental performance of Hammarby Sjöstad (HS), a new city district in Stockholm, Sweden. The ELP is facing implementation, aiming to be established as an instrument of common acceptance. Experiences and results from the ELP has revealed that it can be applied to give a comprehensive picture of the environmental performance of a city district, but also that the tool has a number of weaknesses and there is much to improve in the practical procedures for the use of the tool in environmental assessments. This research project has the overall goal of making the ELP a stakeholder-accepted methodology for LCA-based assessment for the built environment. The overall goal includes two subgoals: (i) a research goal is to find an acceptable compromise in the design of the ELP tool between a natural science and technology based scientific accuracy and a social-science based acceptance of the tool and (ii) an implementation goal is to study and report experience from the use of the tool as developed today. The thesis consists of three papers: (i) the first is a study of two Swedish LCA-based tools for the built environment, which is based on comparative assessments using the ELP and EcoEffect (EE), (ii) the second is based on a questionnaire and interview study, in which we have investigated responses on LCA-based tools for the built environment among stakeholder representatives of Sweden’s building sector, with the purpose to identify barriers and opportunities for increased use of such tools and (iii) the third is based on case studies in HS using the ELP. We have identified the dominant environmental aspects in the ELP and also investigated the accuracy of the results. The study is completed with a development of a simplified version of the ELP, which also is applied in HS. Findings show that despite applying the comparative parts of the ELP and EE on an equal basis (i.e. the object specific data), differences in results were found. The following factors give rise to the differences: (i) differences in material grouping and life expectancy for the construction materials used, (ii) diverse Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data and (iii) different impact assessment. The required level of knowledge to compare, analyse and evaluate assessments made with the ELP and EE, is relatively high, which creates an educational barrier towards increased tool use. A number of other barriers that could mitigate a fruitful implementation of LCA-based tools in Sweden’s building sector have also been identified. We have found barriers between: (i) the current and the desired environmental work within the sector, (ii) the knowledge of and the use of LCA-based tools and (iii) the developers of the tools and the potential users. Other barriers further identified are especially connected to: (i) data (availability and credibility), (ii) costs, (iii) time, (iv) customer pressure, (v) knowledge and (vi) incentives. We have also identified the following opportunities for increased use of the tools: (i) different design of the tools for different actors and situations, (ii) combine LCA with LCC, (iii) involve environmental assessment in the implementation of the EU Directive on energy performance of buildings, (iv) develop reference values, (v) simplify input-data collection, (vi) improve environmental labelling and (vii) provide incentives. In the development of a simplified ELP we have noticed that the most important aspects contributing to the environmental load at a city district level (50 % of the total amount), covers 91-99 % of the total environmental load. The thesis shows that different simplifications of the ELP-tool are required for different purposes, actors and situations. A simplified version of the ELP, “ELP-light” was developed and applied in HS. In the development of ELP-light, we have used some of the identified opportunities and bridged some of the identified barriers. / QC 20101105
