Burnout among Nursing Faculty in TexasThomas, Nanci Terese 08 1900 (has links)
The study analyzed burnout of nursing faculty to determine the frequency, intensity, and predictors of burnout. Christian Maslach's burnout questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and a demographic data survey were used to measure burnout. A random selection of 250 nursing faculty was mailed both a burnout questionnaire and a demographic data survey. There were 192 useable responses that were used in the study. Each questionnaire and demographic data survey were reviewed for completeness and rechecked for accurate data entry. The results were presented in summary tables. Data analysis included frequency, means, Pearson r, and downward, stepwise regression analyses. There was a high frequency and intensity of burnout in all nursing faculty, as measured in the three MBI subscales (depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and personal accomplishment). There was a significant relationship between the number of hours nursing faculty spend with academic advising and the intensity of emotional exhaustion. None of the demographic data, except hours spent in academic advising, were a predictor of burnout.

A Path Analysis of a Job Burnout Model Among FirefighersGoza, Gail R. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to propose an exploratory causal model that examines the influence of several antecedent variables on burnout. The antecedent variables included age, marital status, education, tenure, Type A personality, Jungian types, death anxiety, leadership style, job satisfaction, stress, coping efficacy, and marital satisfaction. The validity of the causal model was tested by using path analysis.
Subjects were 100 male firefighters who completed self-report measures of the predictor variables. Instruments included the Jenkins Activity Survey, Myers- Briggs Type Indicator, Collett-Lester Attitudes Toward Death Scale, Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, Job Descriptive Index, Perceived Job Stress, The Coping Inventory, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Perceived work stress made the only direct contribution to the variance in burnout. Direct paths were found to stress from job satisfaction, Type A personality, and single marital status. Job satisfaction was directly related to leadership (consideration) and the Jungian Introversion, Feeling, and Perceiving preferences. Direct paths were found to marital satisfaction from death anxiety, leadership (consideration), and leadership (structure). Leadership (consideration) was directly related to structure.
From the above results, it can be concluded that perception of stress is an important factor in predicting burnout. Other factors are important contributors to stress and have indirect effects on burnout. Implications for the prevention and treatment of job burnout are discussed.

Personality Correlates of Burnout in TeachersNash, Leslie Tennant 12 1900 (has links)
Career burnout has been recognized as a syndrome marked by mental, physical and emotional exhaustion which is especially prevalent among teachers. Teacher burnout is currently a widely researched phenomenon and controversy over its definition, causes and interventions has been great. Meanwhile, the burnout construct has gained little clarity. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether identifiable personality characteristics, as measured by the Personality Research Form, were consistently associated with burnout in teachers, as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Cognitive Burnout Scale. Moderately strong relationships were found between specific personality characeristics and reported levels of burnout. However, individual factors were not concluded to be as critical as the interaction between such factors and the environment. Future directions are discussed.

Syndrom vyhoření u sester v intenzivní péči / Burnout by Nurses in Intensive CareJánová, Simona January 2011 (has links)
Burnout by nurses in intensive care Abstract: Objective of this thesis was to determine incidence of the risk of burnout by nurses in intensive care in the Motol University Hospital in Prague, compare to risk of burnout among nurses in intensive care for childern and adults and by age, sex, marital status, education, length of experience in health care and on the current department, satisfaction and performance in the workplace. The research method for data collection were two anonymous questionnaires: one prepared by author of the thesis and a standardized questionnaire by dr. Pines to determine the risk of burnout. It was found that more than hlaf of nurses in FN Motol had low risk of burnout and has not demonstrated that nurses have on children's or adult wards increased risk. Results confirmed that discontent and the increasing intensity of stress in the workplace is proportional to the risk of burnout. This research confirmed that although most nurses achieved good results has been shown a high percentage of nurses with alarmig score and even burnout. Therefore we should not ignore this issure, but rather to warn him and avoid unpleasant consequences through educational seminars, pleasant working environment and do not overload nurses. Keywords: burn-out, stress, nurses, intensive care, mental hygiene

Discriminant validation of the three dimensions of burnoutElse, James Rodney January 1990 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment
of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Arts,
Johannesburg, 1990. / The prevailing understanding of burnout is firmly entrenched in, and has been fundamentally influenced
by, the three component definition of the burnout concept proposed by Maslach and
Jackson (1981), as evidenced in its almost exclusive application in the burnout research and theoretical
developments (Maslach & Jackson, 1986; Shirorn, 1989). Although the construct validity
of the three factor burnout structure is well established, no research could be found which has investigated
the discriminant validny of this construct. Thus the aim of tha present study was to
determine how emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and low feelings of personal accomplishment
may relate differentially to conceptually related variables. [Abbreviated Abstract. Open document to view full version] / MT2017

Burnout in sport : A comparative analysis between South African gymnasts tennis playersAbrahamson, Earle Derek January 2016 (has links)
Research on burnout has typically focused on individuals in the human service or
helping occupations, More recently studies and conceptual models have appeared
investigating burnout in the athletic environment, The bulk of research 011 athletic
burnout has been conducted on coaches and, consequently, there is a dearth of
empirical research on athlete burnout. 'the present study compared tennis players
with gymnasts to determine which group is more likely to experience a higher
incidence of burnout. The study also sought to investigate whether any relationship
was evident between sport specific factors on the one hand, and burnout, tedium and
psychological distress on the other. Three objective questionnaires consisting of the
Maslach Burnout Inventory (MDI). Tedium measure and General Health
Questionnaire 28 item scale (GHQ-28), as well as a sport specific questionnaire
developed by the author, were used to collect data from 20 provincial and national
tennis players (10 male and 10 female) and 20 provincial and elite gymnasts (10
male and 10 female). Statistical analysis of the questionnaires revealed a number
of important findings. It was found that sport group was not a significant factor in
the assessment of athlete burnout. Gender, however, was highly significant with
females more likely to experience burnout than males. It was shown that females
experience low levels of sport enjoyment, social support and personal
accomplishment and high levels of sport pressure, emotional exhaustion,
depersonalisation, tedium and psychological distress. Key relationships were further
identified between the sport specific variables of sport enjoyment, social support and
sport pressure, and the burnout, tedium and psychological distress variables.
Negative sport performance such as low enjoyment and social support and
heightened feelings of sport pressure were strongly related to high levels of burnout,
tedium and psychological distress. Recommendations for future research are made
on the basis of these findings.

The relationship bertween wellness and burnout among novice counselorsUnknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between wellness and burnout among novice counselors. This research was carried out in order to gain a better understanding of the experience of the novice counselor as well as to gain insight into the effects of wellness and burnout on these experiences. The significance of this research lies in the need to understand the novice counselor's journey, the factors that can contribute to or prevent burnout, and the potential prevention and intervention strategies that can be employed in response to burnout. The data of a final sample of 144 participants' scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), The Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle (5F-Wel), and a demographic questionnaire were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences in order to explore the relationships between wellness and burnout. The researcher found significant relationships between demographic factors of the novice counselor, including age, years of experience, and number of hours delivering counseling services, and both the MBI and the 5F-Wel. The researcher also found a relationship between all factors of wellness and the three subscales of burnout. A particularly important finding was the significance of the Coping Self, Physical Self, and Creative Self subscales of wellness to the subscales of burnout. The implications of the findings include the development of specific intervention and prevention strategies for novice counselors. Limitations of this research include the relatively small sample size, potential bias among the participants who chose to complete the survey, and the limited generalizability. / by Jennifer Bilot. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of Access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.
