Burnout syndrome in the teaching profession

Vilakazi, Sipho Arnold January 2005 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF EDUCATION in the Department of Educational Planning and Administration at the University of Zululand, 2005. / This study set out to investigate the prevalence of burnout among teachers. To this end, the following objectives were formulated: To (a) ascertain the incidence of burnout among teachers in KwaZulu-Natal. (b) determine the manner in which teachers manifest burnout, (c) find out whether there is any association between teachers' biographical factors and burnout. In order to investigate the aims of the study the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Educators Survey was used. This instrument was administered to a sample of 364 teachers who teach in traditionally black secondary schools in three districts of the Zululand region of the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Data was analysed by means of the chi-square one-sample test and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). After the analysis and interpretation of data was done, the study came to the following conclusions: (i) teachers differ in the extent to which they experience the incidence of burnout. There is a group of teachers who experience low burnout levels, there is also a group that experience moderate burnout levels and a group that experiences high burnout levels. However, the test revealed that the majority of teachers experience low burnout levels, (ii) There is a positive relationship between the variable of the level of education and emotional exhaustion, and between the variable of gender and personal accomplishment. This means that teachers who hold a postgraduate qualification experience high emotional exhaustion compared to their counterparts who hold lower qualifications. This further means that male teachers experience high personal accomplishment levels compared to their female counterparts, (iii) Finally the study revealed that there is no relationship between teachers' biographical factors (gender, age, marital status, level of education, position at school, work experience, average number of learners in classes taught, location of school) and burnout.

Syndrom vyhoření u vysokoškolských pedagogů - mezinárodní srovnávací studie / Burnout Syndrome in University Teachers - International Comparative Study

Černíková, Barbora January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the phenomenon of burnout in university teachers, who have been previously rather neglected in connection with this topic. The theoretical part provides an analysis of current knowledge regarding the development of the concept of burnout from the very early interest in this issue in the 1970s to the present, with emphasis being placed on the teaching profession, especially in the tertiary education sector. In the empirical part of the research, the assumption of different levels of burnout in university teachers in the former Eastern Bloc and Western European country was tested. This international study compares the burnout level in teachers from the philosophy faculties of Czech Charles University and German Universität Regensburg. In order to achieve a more holistic view of this topic, the levels of life engagement and depression have been studied as well. The data were collected with the help of Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Life Engagement Test, Beck Depression Inventory and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Basic research assumption predicting differences in levels of burnout, life engagement and depression in Czech and German university teachers was confirmed in only one burnout subscale, namely the subscale of student-related burnout. Additionally, the...

Psychohygiena jako oblast osobnostního a profesního rozvoje budoucích učitelů 1. stupně / Mental hygiene as a field of personality and vocational development of future primary teachers

Nováková, Marie January 2021 (has links)
My diploma thesis deals with the issue of mental hygiene as a field of personality and vocational development of future primary teachers. The aim of theoretical part is to summarize the facts about teacher's profession, which are an argument for systematic mental hygiene development of teacher students. One of the goals is to describe the study of teaching as my respondents in empirical part are future teachers. The next aim is to find answers to what attitudes, knowledge and skills should teachers have to be able to prevent burnout syndrome, to be resistant to stress and to be active in their approach to personality and professional development. The practical part was realized by a mixed research among students of the primary teaching who are in the 1st and the 5th grade. The research questions were: What is the approach of the students of teaching to the personality development in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade? What are the competencies of the future primary teachers in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade in a burnout area? To what extent do the future primary teachers know in the 1st grade and in the 5th grade about the risk of burnout (what does it cause, what are the manifestations of burnout and how to prevent it)? Data were collected by the questionnaire method. My research shows that...
