The George Bush Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M University

Frink, Julia Susan 2009 August 1900 (has links)
This was the first comprehensive doctoral dissertation on the George Bush Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M University. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum was the focal point. The purpose was to describe the global significance, work and educational contributions of the Bush Presidential Library while exploring its partnership with Texas A&M University. The primary data sources were: archival records, museum exhibits, interviews and my field work experiences. Beyond being a descriptive dissertation, this study offered unique hypotheses and conclusions. It examined the higher educational aspects of the Bush Presidential Library Center's operating context within Texas A&M University. These included the educational value of George Bush's career, the Bush Presidential Library's contents, and its benefits and technology use in educational programming. This study answered two unique hypotheses: how President Bush's liberation of Kuwait increased the Middle Eastern funding of presidential libraries and the Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University. George Bush's global presidency, distinguished international public service career and his world-changing, historical presidential achievements gave the Bush Presidential Library and Museum an extraordinary educational value. The data showed the educational value of, benefits of and technology's role in educational programming at the Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The global changes mirrored President Bush's career and his effort to combat terrorism. China's emergence as a world power was attributed to President Bush's career. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum is the core asset of the center. The data showed President Bush's liberation of Kuwait directly influenced the funding of his presidential library and the subsequent ones. The data showed the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University as the site for his presidential library. Texas A&M University is the best place for the George Bush Presidential Library Center. A university environment is the best place to host a presidential library.

An Investigation into the Monitoring of Pest Control Devices using Wireless Communication

Jeffcote, Richard Grant January 2013 (has links)
The monitoring of animal control devices (animal traps) in remote areas currently requires field workers to visit each device on a regular basis, which is costly and time consuming. Better monitoring practices could allow DOC to increase their trapping practices through reduced costs. Essentially, the aim of this paper is to reduce the number of man-hours, and hence resources, required to check each trap. An attempt will be made to use wireless communications to check the status of each trap, and hence decide whether or not it will need to be checked, bringing benefits of efficiency and cost savings to the Department of Conservation. It is recognised that the environment is very difficult for traditional wireless communications to operate reliably and therefore new methods or technologies were investigated for this application. A system operating at 27MHz using a modified pulse position modulation scheme was found to be an appropriate solution; however the success of wireless communications in pest control management is dependent upon the trapping location, patterns and terrain.

Trilobum. Main research goal is to explore and estimate cranberry types and species growing naturally in Lithuania and derived in other countries, their suitability for decorative afforestation and berry cultivation. To achieve this goal fallowing tasks are performed: 1. Estimation of types and species of cranberrybushes growing in Lithuania, 2. Selection and offering the best cranberrybush species for berry cultivation, 3. Estimation and offering the best cranberrybush species for decorative afforestation. These task are performed by analysing literature and scientific articles, by estimating the seasonal evolutional property of cranberrybush, by making measures of growing shoots, by estimating productivity of the cranberrybush species and by making biometrical measures. The research showed, that by side simple cranberrybush Viburnum opulus may other species derived in foreign countries grown and could used for decorative afforestation. The cranberrybushes can be divided to early species as 'Šukšinskaja' and 'Zarnica ', middle species as 'Kijevskaja Sadovaja', 'Upninkai', 'Leningradskaja Otbornaja' 'Zarnica-2'... [to full text]

The Question of Torture in the Bush Administration's War on Terror

Baker, Natasha Távora January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Marc Landy / This thesis serves to clarify and concretize the controversy surrounding the debate on torture as it pertains to the War on Terror during the Bush Administration years. It argues that policy and rhetoric decisions made at the top of the political food chain contributed to the instances of abuse and torture that occurred in the various arenas of the war (i.e. Afghanistan, Iraq, Guantanamo, and CIA “black sites”). Such an argument is made through an analysis of what defines interrogation and torture, what techniques were in fact authorized, what factors went into determining which techniques to use, and what influence these techniques had on abuses that occurred. This thesis concludes with policy updates based on lessons learned and briefly addresses the efforts made by the Obama Administration in regards to torture, interrogation, and terrorism. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. Shadows, faces and echoes of an African war: The Rhodesian bush war through the eyes of Chas Lotter – soldier poet

Hagemann, Michael Eric January 2016 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Poetry that is rooted in that most extreme of human experiences, war, continues to grip the public imagination. When the poetry under scrutiny comes from the "losing side" in a colonial war of liberation, important moral and ethical questions arise. In this thesis, I examine the published and unpublished works of Chas Lotter, a soldier who fought in the Rhodesian Army during the Zimbabwean liberation war (1965- 1980). In investigating Lotter's artistic record of this war, I propose that a powerful, socially embedded Rhodesian national mythology was a catalyst for acceptance of, and participation in, the Rhodesian regime's ideological and military aims. A variety of postcolonial theoretical approaches will be used to explore the range of thematic concerns that emerge and to unpack the dilemmas experienced by a soldier-poet who took part in that conflict. Trauma theory, too, will be drawn upon to critically respond to the personal impact that participation in organized violence has upon combatants and non-combatants alike. The production and marketing of this cultural record will also be examined and in the conclusion, I speculate on the changes modern technology and evolving social mores may have on future developments in war literature. Finally, I conclude my case for installing the challenging work of this often conflicted and contradictory soldier-poet as a necessary adjunct to the established canon of Zimbabwean Chimurenga writing.

Phenotypic Differences in Populations of Euonymus Americanus L. from the Central United States & Autecological Studies of this Species in a Deciduous Forest of Kentucky

Bayer, Paul 01 May 1984 (has links)
The concentrations of sodium and potassium in the leaves of Euonymus americanus collected from a relict hardwood forest during a four month period showed a possible winter conditioning pattern. Seeds collected from this same relict stand would not germinate, even though they were subjected to a wide variety of germination experiments. Phenotypic differentiation in fully developed leaves was not found; however, differences related to the length of the growing season were noted. Autecological studies of Euonymus americanus should be continued to investigate the role of this plant in relict hardwood stands.

Effect of fermentation temperature and duration on chemical composition of Bush tea (Athrixia phylicoides DC.)

Hlahla, Linda Noble 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.) --University of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus, 2010 / A study was conducted to determine the effect of fermentation temperature and duration on chemical composition of bush tea (Athrixia phylicoides DC.). Bush tea was fermented in incubators at different temperatures and for different lengths of time for quality improvement. Treatments for fermentation temperature consisted of control (24°C; room temperature), 30°C, 34°C, 38°C and 42°C where the tea leaves were fermented for 30 minutes. Treatments for fermentation time consisted of control (0), 60, 90, and 120 minutes at an incubator temperature of 22-26°C. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used with three replicates for both evaluations. The chemical analysis (polyphenols, tannins and antioxidants) were done using Waterman and Mole (1994) method. The results of this study demonstrated that fermentation temperature significantly increases polyphenols at 30, 34, and 38°C whereas tannin content showed a great reduction at 38 and 42°C. Increasing fermentation time achieved a significant increase in both polyphenols (60 and 90 minutes) and tannin contents (90 and 120 minutes). However, changes in either fermentation temperature or time did not give any significant influence on antioxidant content of bush tea. / National Research Foundation
