The adoption of interorganisational information systems by South African firms: a technological, organisational and environmental perspective

Mkhize, Zamambo January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (M.Com. (Information Systems))--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, School of Economic and Business Sciences, 2017 / Interorganisational information systems (IOIS) are automated systems which allow one or more firms to connect to their suppliers or customers in order to exchange data and information. Previous literature has suggested that the adoption of interorganisational information systems presents several benefits and challenges. IOIS is assumed to offer organisations the capability to improve business processes and provide better working relations with business partners. Despite this advantage that IOIS offers, adoption of IOIS presents complexities such as those associated with compatibility with a firm's IT infrastructure, lack of available skills, and concerns over data security and system failures. Through a review of existing IOIS literature, this study identified that four types of IOISs are available in South African, namely dyadic, multilateral, community, and hub and spoke. In addition, the technological, organisational and environmental (TOE) factors influencing the adoption IOIS were identified. A model exploring the effects of the pre-determined TOE factors on the adoption of IOIS was developed and tested. The TOE framework provided a theoretical contribution and addressed a gap in the literature into the barriers and determinants of the adoption of interorganisational information system (IOIS) across various organisations. A quantitative study was carried out and survey data was collected from a sample of 119 organisations across different sectors in South Africa. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire instrument administered online to a single key informant from each sampled organisation. The results revealed that multilateral IOIS are the most adopted systems while Hub and spoke IOIS are the least used. Furthermore, from the elven technologies which were identified in the literature review, the study revealed that groupware technologies, electronic payment system/online banking, video conferencing and electronic data interchange were the most adopted IOIS technologies within the sampled organisations. Adoption of IOIS was defined in two ways. First, IOIS adoption was measured as the number of implemented IOIS technologies. Second, as the extent which IOIS is used as communication medium with business partners and supports an organisation in decision making, business operation and replaces legacy technologies. Correlation analysis was used to test the model’s hypotheses and multiple regression was used to test the overall TOE model. The results showed that perceived compatibility, competition, and IS technical skill and education and training are most correlated with the adoption of IOIS, where adoption is measured as the extent of IOIS used as communication medium with business partners and used as support within an organisation. Top management support, trading partner pressure and perceived relative advantage of IOIS were also positively correlated with adoption, where adoption is measured as implemented IOIS technologies. Perceived complexity was found to be a barrier to IOIS adoption. This study serves as a guide for assessing factors contributing to interorganisational information system adoption and provides organisations with greater insight into the factors likely to enable and inhibit IOIS adoption. A framework to proactively identify and remedy potential business and IT misalignment

Maree, D. C. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this research report is to identify alignment factors, symptoms, and remedies influencing the Business and Information Technology (IT) relationship. To put discussions around this topic in context, a sound theoretical basis is built with a background check on the position of IT, relative to the business of an organisation. Through an in-depth literature review, the business value of IT is explained and the vital importance of interaction between these two 'worlds' is discussed, where after the concept of alignment (the bonding agent between these two worlds) is explained. Factors commonly known to impact upon alignment are discussed, together with symptoms characteristically associated with each misaligned problem factor. Lastly, remedies to misaligned factors are collated. Although alignment factors, symptoms, and remedies proved to be fairly interrelated and intertwined, discussions nevertheless aim to describe these in isolation as far as it logically make sense. The following alignment factors were identified in the literature review, and are summarised in Figure 5.2: • Communications. • Technology Scope. • Competency Value measurements. • Governance. • Partnership. • Skills. Findings in the literature review are summarised and condensed, and symptoms and remedies are categorised on factor level to formulate an alignment-guiding framework (Table 5.1 - 5.6). The application of the framework is explained in these four basic steps: • Step 1: Assess the 'health' of a company' alignment factors. • Step 2: Determine the sub-factors' level of alignment. • Step 3: Remedy misaligned factors. Toepassing van die raamwerk word in vier basiese stappe verduidelik: • Stap 1: "Assess the 'health' of a company' alignment factors." • Stap 2: "Determine the sub-factors' level of alignment." • Stap 3: "Remedy misaligned factors." • Stap 4: "Periodical re-evaluation."

PRINCIPLES FOR COMPUTER-AIDED INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT.

STOTT, JACK WALLIS. January 1984 (has links)
This dissertation describes partial requirements for the Plexsys Development Environment (DE) for developing and implementing Management Information Systems (MIS). A DE is a complete and unified set of concepts, techniques, and tools (methods) that aid in normative requirements analysis, elicitation and ideation of unique requirements, modeling, analyzing, and performing design transforms. A framework is proposed as an aid for evaluating existing MIS analysis and design methods, and for developing a complete DE. A MIS produces decision support information and performs the transaction processing task. Part of this dissertation is to formalize the analysis and modeling of transaction processing. As part of this process, a modeling language and processing requirements are proposed. A design transform is proposed that develops logical system requirements given a set of decision support and transaction processing information requirements. This transform uses a formalization of the output decomposition process. In order to automate the transform, functional data types are defined. Further, constant data processing requirements are defined. Using the Plexsys software base as a model, the concept of the Enterprise Software Development Library (ESDL) is proposed. This library contains software tools specifically for the extension of programming languages for the business data processing environment.

Client/Server Systems Performance Evaluation Measures Use and Importance: a Multi-Site Case Study of Traditional Performance Measures Applied to the Client/Server Environment

Posey, Orlando Guy 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines the role of traditional computing performance measures when used in a client/server system (C/SS) environment. It also evaluates the effectiveness of traditional computing measures of mainframe systems for use in C/SS. The underlying problem was the lack of knowledge about how performance measures are aligned with key business goals and strategies. This research study has identified and evaluated client/server performance measurements' importance in establishing an effective performance evaluation system. More specifically, this research enables an organization to do the following: (1) compare the relative states of development or importance of performance measures, (2) identify performance measures with the highest priority for future development, (3) contrast the views of different organizations regarding the current or desired states of development or relative importance of these performance measures.

Consultation for small-business computerisation

14 August 2012 (has links)
D.Comm. / The small-business enterprise is becoming evermore important to economies worldwide, even to those of first-world countries. In South Africa, the small-business sector plays an even greater part. Research has shown that computer technology can be implemented in the small-business environment to increase productivity and even to gain a competitive edge over one's competitors. Despite the fact that small-business enterprises stand to derive great benefits from computerisation, many managers lack the necessary expertise to computerise their businesses. Although the necessary expertise may be acquired by engaging consultants, the associated cost often is beyond the financial means of the smallbusiness enterprise. The principal aim of this study, therefore, is to identify mechanisms in terms of which the necessary expertise could be made available to the small-business enterprise at a fair price. The study furthermore proposes a consultation model in terms of which the costs can be shared by enough small-business enterprises so that it would still be affordable to small-business enterprises and financially viable for consultants.

Real-Time Data Analytics and Optimization for Computational Advertising

Unknown Date (has links)
Online advertising has built a market of hundreds of billions of dollars and still continues to grow. With well developed techniques in big data storage, data mining and analytics, online advertising is able to reach targeted audiences e ctively. Real- time bidding refers to the buying and selling of online ad impressions through ad inventory auctions which occur in the time it takes a webpage to load. How to de- termine the bidding price and how to allocate the budget of advertising is the key to successful ad campaigns. Both of these aspects are fundamental to most campaign optimizations and we will introduce both of them in this thesis. For bidding price determination, we improved the estimation of CTR (Click Through Rate) (one of the most important factors of determining the bidding price) by using a re ned hierar- chical tree structure for the estimation. The result of the experiment and the A/B test showed our proposal can provide stable improvement. For budget allocation, we introduce SCO (Single Campaign Optimization) and CCO (Cross Campaign Opti- mization). SCO has been applied by our commercial partner while CCO needs more research. We will rst introduce the methods of SCO and then give our proposal about CCO. We modeled CCO as a LP (Linear Programming) problem as well as designed an e ective procedure to implement optimal impressions distribution. Our simulation showed our proposal can signi cantly increase global Gross Pro t (GP). / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
