FAST COMMUNITY STRUCTURE ANALYSIS OF CALL GRAPHS FOR MALWARE DETECTIONPooja Patil (6636122) 15 May 2019 (has links)

The use of graph-structured data in applications is increasing day by day. In order to infer
useful information from such data, fast analytics and software tools are required. One of
the graph analytics techniques used is community detection. Community detection is the
technique of finding structural communities within a graph. Such communities are defined
as groups which have highly connected nodes and have similarities with each other.

This research proposes a parallel heuristic for faster community detection using
the parallel version of the Louvain algorithm: Grappolo. The Louvain algorithm is a
hierarchical algorithm that focuses on modularity optimization. It gained popularity
because of its ability to detect high-quality communities faster than the other existing
community detection algorithms. However, the Louvain algorithm is a sequential
algorithm. To reduce the execution time of the Louvain algorithm, a parallel version
named Grappolo exists in the literature. This algorithm proposes parallel heuristics that
address the challenges that occur due to parallelizing the sequential Louvain algorithm.

In this study, the researcher is investigating if Grappolo can be further parallelized
to further reduce the execution time maintaining the quality of communities detected. To
evaluate the proposed heuristic, it was tested on an OpenMP multithreaded environment.
It was implemented on source codes of Android malware applications. However, as
compared to Grapplolo, the proposed modified version resulted in higher execution times
for the inputs tested. The modularity of the communities detected was similar to the
Grappolo implementation.

The relationship between work-family conflict and burnout amongst call center employees: Optimism and a moderatorPillay, Jayde 24 February 2021 (has links)
This study examined work-family conflict as a predictor of burnout as well as the moderating role that optimism and pessimism may have had on this relationship. Participants were call centre employees from a financial institution in Cape Town (N = 94). Cross-sectional data was collected via electronic self-report questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis demonstrated the unidimensionality of work-to-family conflict despite the two-dimensional model that was expected. Bivariate regression analysis showed that work-to-family conflict explained a significant proportion of the variance in both dimensions of burnout – emotional exhaustion and cynicism. Contrary to what was expected, the results of the moderation analyses were not significant. Optimism and pessimism did not moderate the relationship between work-to-family conflict and burnout. The results show that work-to-family conflict negatively affects call centre employees' well-being. The results are discussed and implications for management and suggestions for future research are presented.

How Students of Japanese Perceive and Use TechnologyRubino, David 25 October 2018 (has links)
The role of technology in education has expanded to a near universal reality. In foreign languages the field of Technology-enhanced Language Learning, has long sought to effectively implement instruction with these tools, and often to great success, often through the guise of Computer-assisted Language Learning. However, most studies investigating the student perception of class structures incorporating technology are based on what instructors have implemented.
Students, the counterparts of instructors, often own more than one technological tool and will often employ these tools in their studies. For learners of foreign languages, certain aspects of technology are selected for various tasks based on personal beliefs on how effective these modes of technology may be.
This study seeks to discover which technologies students of Japanese select, how they employ those tools and if it makes them feel more confident in their studies. This study also seeks to answer how much technology students wish their instructors would use and hopefully inspire foreign language instructors to adopt technology in a way that aligns with student preference.

In what ways are war propaganda similar to the representation of russians in the Call of Duty: ModernWarfare franchise?Svärd, Oskar, Ohlsson, Kim January 2020 (has links)
In war propaganda you dehumanise your current or potential enemy by giving them undesirable traits. During the world wars it was common to see propaganda posters. During the cold war the posters evolved into television. In this paper we are examining potential instances of propaganda in video games. We use an immersive research method with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and compare the key scenes representing russians to enemy archetypes found in propaganda. We also use the dynamics of enmity to analyse how enmity is furthered through the russians context in the conflict in relation to the player. We found that Russians show similar traits to enemy archetypes found in propaganda while the player is represented by a character portrayed as protecting the western world from nuclear war. In conclusion games serve as an interactive medium where players can be subject to propaganda messages where they need to accept taking actions in accordance with propaganda message that furthering enmity.

Developing and Studying the Effectiveness of EFR Annotations for Chinese Language LearnersChen, Amber Marie 19 November 2009 (has links)
This project is intended to take the film To Live, directed by Zhang Yimou, and apply the Electronic Film Review (EFR) approach to it in a Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) setting. The Electronic Film Review project, developed by Alan K. Melby, is aimed at providing a superior language learning experience for Americans learning Chinese. Using feature films as a teaching tool has been found to stimulate and motivate students to achieve higher language levels, but in order for optimal learning to occur the material must be challenging yet accessible to the student. Most feature films, by themselves, are too advanced for the average language learner. The EFR approach provides annotations designed specifically for the feature film with the language learner in mind. These annotations can include access to vocabulary helps, grammar and cultural notes in order to bridge the gap between the learner and the film. It does not alter the film itself. This approach has been used with ESL students (English annotations), French language learners, and with Korean ESL learners (Korean annotations), but has not been developed for students learning Chinese. The purpose of this project is not only to apply the technology of the Electronic Film Review program to a Chinese film for the purpose of aiding Chinese language learners, but also to critique whether or not the tool is effective in helping students to gain better listening comprehensions skills and therefore ultimately better language skills. Previous studies have not shown clear results on this issue. This thesis will briefly review what the EFR project is and how it has been used with other films and languages as well as the findings up to this point. Then it will look at the effects of annotations on several aspects of listening comprehension as well as student preferences and reactions. It will then evaluate the results collectively to determine whether students watching the film without the help of EFR annotations show differing levels of listening comprehension achievement when compared with those using the EFR tools. Suggestions will be made for further improvements.

Reaktivní audit / Reactive AuditHlísta, Juraj January 2010 (has links)
The thesis deals with the proposal and the implementation of an extension for the audit system in Linux - the reactive audit. It brings a new functionality to the auditing in form of triggering reactions to certain audit events. The reactive audit is implemented within an audit plugin and its use is optional. Additionally, there is another plugin which stores some audit events and provides time-related statistics for the first plugin. As the result, the mechanism of the reactive audit does not only react to some audit events, it is also able to reveal anomalies according to the statistical information and set ofe the appropriate reactions. It is a fairly general mechanism that can be useful in various situations.

Speech Recognition Software for Language Learning: Toward an Evaluation of Validity and Student PerceptionsCordier, Deborah 14 July 2009 (has links)
A renewed focus on foreign language (FL) learning and speech for communication has resulted in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) software developed with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). ASR features for FL pronunciation (Lafford, 2004) are functional components of CALL designs used for FL teaching and learning. The ASR features available with the TeLL me More French software provides pronunciation, intonation and speaking practice and feedback. ASR features are examined quantitatively through French student performance of recorded ASR-scored speech and compared with human raters of the same produced speech samples. A comparison of ASR scores to human raters considers the validity of ASR-scored feedback for individualized and FL classroom instruction. Qualitative analyses of student performances and perceptions of ASR are evaluated using an online survey linked to individual pronunciations and performance and examined for positive impact (Chapelle, 2001) and usability.
