Ideal Performance Practice for Silent Film: An Overview of How-to Manuals and Cue Sheet Music Accompaniment from the 1910s – 1920s

This thesis argues that how-to manuals and cue sheets are indicative of ideal performance practice amongst musicians from the silent film era. Pre-scored music was widely practiced amongst musicians. How-to manuals and cue sheets helped the musician accurately and consistently accompany a film. Authors of period manuals include W. Tyacke George, Edith Lang and George West, Ernst Luz and George Tootell. Compilers of cue sheet include James C. Bradford, Ernst Luz, Edward Kilenyi and Michael P. Krueger. Cue by cue analyses of The Cat and the Canary and The Gaucho show a high repetition of music, establishing continuity between the music played and the image on the screen. This shows how compilers associated music and film. These manuals and cue sheets prove that the musician community strove for a close connection between the image on screen and accompaniment. By 1920, arbitrary improvisation was unacceptable.

Seamounts play an important role in facilitating the exchange of elements between the oceanic lithosphere and the overlying seawater. This water-rock interaction is caused by circulating seawater and controls the chemical exchange in submarine and sub-seafloor rocks. The exchange mechanism plays a major role in determining the final composition of these submarine rocks. This investigation is designed to evaluate the (i) degree of alteration and element mobility, (ii) to identify relations between alteration types and (iii) to characterise the chemical processes that takes place during seafloor and sub-seafloor alteration in the Central Atlantic region. The investigated submarine rocks are typically altered. They are composed mostly of calcite and clay minerals in addition to original magmatic feldspar, olivine, pyroxene, quartz, biotite, and amphibole.  Elemental analyses show that submarine rocks with high water-rock ratio have experienced near complete loss of Silica and alkali elements to seawater but are enriched in calcium and phosphorous. In addition, there is a strong enrichment of trace elements such as Sr, Ti, Rb and trivalent REEs in altered submarine samples that are likely residual in character. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic values indicate a low temperature alteration process at less than 50℃.  Nannofossils were present in one sample and investigation suggests that the seamount south of El Hierro evolved from a young Canary activity rather than the early Cretaceous magmatic events as has been argued previously. / Djuphavsberg spelar en viktig roll för att underlätta utbytet av element mellan den oceaniska litosfären och det överliggande havsvattnet. Interaktionen mellan vattnet och bergarterna orsakas av cirkulerande havsvatten och kontrollerar det kemiska utbytet i undervattensbergarterna och som även spelar en viktig roll för att bestämma de slutliga produkterna i dessa bergarter. Undersökningen syftar till att (i) utvärdera graden av kemisk omvandling och rörlighet av elementen, (ii) identifiera samband mellan olika omvandlingstyper och (iii) att karakterisera de kemiska processer som äger rum vid kemisk omvandling av bergarter vid och under havsbottnen i Centralatlanten. De undersökta undervattensbergarterna är generellt kemiskt omvandlade och består av kalcit och lermineral utöver ursprungligt magmatiskt fältspat, olivin, pyroxen, kvarts, biotit och amfibol. Elementanalyser visar att de undervattensbergarter med en hög vatten-berg kvot har förlorat i stort sett all Si och nästan alla alkaliska element till havsvattnet medan en anrikning har skett av kalcium och fosfor. Dessutom har det i de omvandlade undervattensproverna skett en tydlig anrikning av spårämnena Sr, Ti, Rb och av trivalenta sällsynta jordartsmetaller. Syre- och väteisotopvärden indikerar en omvandlingsprocess vid låga temperaturer mindre än 50 °C. I ett prov fanns nannofossiler och en undersökning av dessa tyder på att djuphavsberget söder om El Hierro bildades under en yngre vulkanisk aktivitet än den magmatiska aktivitet som tidigare föreslagits som ägde rum under perioden Krita.

This diploma thesis focuses on the Canary Islands special arrangements in taxation in the context of the international trade since the end of the 18th century, which were related to their unique physiographical and socio-economical conditions. Long- term calling of a local society for a taxation which could lead the islands from a deep economic crises of the first half of the 19th century and spreading the idea of liberalism in international trade, culminated in declaration of Puertos Francos in 1852. Granting of Puertos Francos led to closing of customs houses and abolition of some duties connected with the foreign exchange. Thanks to the new system of taxation, by the turn of the 18th and 19th century, the Canary Islands became an important junction of the international trade and attracted interest of colonial empires, which used the islands as a starting point of the trails to their overseas territories.

Application And Optimization Of Membrane Processes Treating Brackish And Surficial Groundwater For Potable Water Production

The research presented in this dissertation provides the results of a comprehensive assessment of the water treatment requirements for the City of Sarasota. The City’s drinking water supply originates from two sources: (1) brackish groundwater from the Downtown well field, and (2) Floridan surficial groundwater from the City’s Verna well field. At the time the study was initiated, the City treated the brackish water supply using a reverse osmosis process that relied on sulfuric acid for pH adjustment as a pretreatment method. The Verna supply was aerated at the well field before transfer to the City’s water treatment facility, either for softening using an ion exchange process, or for final blending before supply. For the first phase of the study to evaluate whether the City can operate its brackish groundwater RO process without acid pretreatment, a three-step approach was undertaken that involved: (1) pilot testing the plan to reduce the dependence on acid, (2) implementing the plan on the fullscale system with conservative pH increments, and (3) continuous screening for scale formation potential by means of a “canary” monitoring device. Implementation of the study was successful and the annual savings in operating expenditure to the City is projected to be about $120,000. From the acid elimination study, using the relationship between electrical conductivity in water and total dissolved solids in water samples tested, a dynamic approach to evaluate the performance of the reverse osmosis plant was developed. This trending approach uses the mass transfer coefficient principles of the Homogeneous Solution Diffusion Model. Empirical models iv were also developed to predict mass transfer coefficients for solutes in terms of total dissolved solids and sodium. In the second phase of the study, the use of nanofiltration technology to treat aerated Verna well field water was investigated. The goal was to replace the City’s existing ion exchange process for the removal of hardness and total dissolved solids. Different pretreatment options were evaluated for the nanofiltration pilot to remove colloidal sulfur formed during pre-aeration of the groundwater. Sandfilters and ultrafiltration technology were evaluated as pretreatment. The sandfilter was inadequate as a pre-screen to the nanofiltration pilot. The ultrafiltration pilot (with and without a sandfilter as a pre-screen) proved to be an adequate pretreatment to remove particulates and colloids, especially the sulfur colloids in the surficial groundwater source. The nanofiltration pilot, was shown to be an efficient softening process for the Verna well field water, but it was impacted by biofoulants like algae. The algae growth was downstream of the ultrafiltration process, and so chlorination was used in the feed stream of the ultrafiltration process with dechlorination in the nanofiltration feed stream using excess bisulfite to achieve stable operations. Non-phosphonate based scale inhibitors were also used to reduce the availability of nutrients for biofilm growth on the nanofiltration membranes. The combined ultrafiltration-nanofiltration option for treatment of the highly fouling Verna water samples is feasible with chlorination (to control biofouling) and subsequent dechlorination. Alternatively, the study has shown that the City can also more economically and more reliably use ultrafiltration technology to filter all water from its Verna well field and use its current ion exchange process for removal of excess hardness in the water that it supplies
