Primary Systems and Voter Turnout: Measuring the Institutional Effect of Primary Type on Voter Turnout

Lott, Leslie 15 May 2009 (has links)
Using the 1990, 1994 and 1998 Congressional mid-term elections, this study looks at whether the type of primary system in a person's state has an effect on whether or not that person will vote in the general election. The five types of primary systems (closed, semi-closed, semiopen, open and blanket) are explained as well as traditional factors for likelihood of voting. It is hypothesized that the more closed the primary system, the less likely a person is to vote. Data analysis shows that when significant, living in an open primary state does significantly increase the likelihood that a person will vote. However, primary type was significant in only six of the nine models studied here.

Segregação socioespacial: os condomínios horizontais na cidade de São Carlos/SP

No. of bitstreams: 1 3903.pdf: 15607351 bytes, checksum: 9cb2d710675184e0023df8da9b44661f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-09 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / This dissertation focuses the closed horizontal condominiums and subdivisions in the city of São Carlos that appeared in the 1970s consolidating itself as the form of housing of highincome classes that seek parts far from the center to live within the walls. In 1976 in São Carlos, it was deployed Parque Sabará the first enterprise of this tipe since then, the condominiums expanded and hold large areas of the city. They are located as in portions more remote as in the consolidated urban area. This dynamic is increasing in many Brazilian cities, as evidenced by the growing production of work aimed at this issue. This way, there are discussions and questions the social perspective, as an ingredient of socio-spatial segregation, or in relation to the legality of the establishment of these enterprises, that do not have specific legislation that regulates us. Therefore, the dissertation refers to the study and analysis of closed residential subdivisions and condominiums in São Carlos, and the transformations inserted in the context of the deployment of these enterprises. The research is based in literature search, documentary, photographic and visits to investigate the production of urban space from the closed condominiums and subdivisions set in a dynamic real estate production. This study was guided by the discussion of socio-spatial segregation and the capitalist production of space that impose occupation patterns that spread and are responsible for maintaining the capital.

Comparison and Improvement of Different Access Methods in Femtocell Networks

Demirdögen, İbrahim 16 April 2010 (has links)
A variety of wide band wireless systems have been pushed towards their limits in order to meet growing interest for high data rate in wireless communications. In particular, the limit due to the spectrum scarcity forces communication systems to utilize the spectrum resource at maximum efficiency level. One of the methods that allow effective spectrum employing is to cover multiple systems over same spectrum source by allowing bearable interference to occur between them. Femtocells have been recently introduced as a remedy to spectrum scarcity and coverage problems in current cellular structures. Femtocells are personal use base stations and they share the spectrum in a way that they can coexist with the macrocell. This thesis provides a critical reviews of different access methods in femtocell networks and further introduces improvements related to these access methods. Simulation results validate capacity improvement of proposed techniques compared to the existing access methods.

Fission Yield Studies and Closed Shell Effects in Atomic Nuclei

Wanless, Robert 10 1900 (has links)
The relative fission yields of the isotopes of krypton and xenon have been determined mass spectrometrically. Abnormal fission yields, resulting in fine structure in the mass fission yield curve, have been found in both mass ranges. A shift of the fine structure to lower masses has been observed in going from U^235 + n fission to U^238 + n fission. From this shift in fine structure, it has been possible to determine the proportion of U^235 and U^236 neutron fission that have occurred in the sample. Evidence is presented to show that the observed fine structure and the shift in this fine structure is the result of a combination of two effects involved the extra stability of closed neutron shells of 50 and 82 neutrons which fall in the Kr and Xe ranges respectively. The capture of thermal neutrons by Xe^135, which modifies the fission yields in the 135 and 136 mass chains, has been studied so that the observed fission yields at these masses may be suitably corrected. Finally, the branching ratio between the isomeric states of Kr^85 and the half-life of the long-lived isomer have been re-determined and found to be 0.29 and 10.27 ± 0.18 yrs. respectively. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

High fidelity control and simulation of a three degrees-of-freedom wafer handling robot

Babayan, Elaina Noelle 07 January 2016 (has links)
Wafer handling robotics are critical in semiconductor manufacturing to enable tight control of temperature, humidity, and particle contamination during processing. Closed-loop dynamic modeling during the robot design process ensures designs meet throughput and stability specifications prior to prototype hardware purchase. Dynamic models are also used in model-based control to improve performance. This thesis describes the generation and mathematical verification of a dynamic model for a three degrees-of-freedom wafer handling mechanism with one linear and two rotary axes. The dynamic plant model is integrated with motion and motor controller models, and the closed-loop performance is compared with experimental data. Models with rigid and flexible connections are compared, and the flexible connection models are shown to overall agree better with a measured step response. The simulation time increase from the addition of flexible connections can be minimized by modeling only the component stiffnesses that impact the closed-loop mechanism response. A method for selecting which elements to include based on controller bandwidth is presented and shown to significantly improve simulation times with minimal impact on model predictive performance.
