IMPROVED DOCUMENT SUMMARIZATION AND TAG CLOUDS VIA SINGULAR VALUE DECOMPOSITION

Automated summarization is a difficult task. World-class summarizers can provide only "best guesses" of which sentences encapsulate the important content from within a set of documents. As automated systems continue to improve, users are still not given the means to observe complex relationships between seemingly independent concepts. In this research we used singular value decompositions to organize concepts and determine the best candidate sentences for an automated summary. The results from this straightforward attempt were comparable to world-class summarizers. We then included a clustered tag cloud, using a singular value decomposition to measure term "interestingness" with respect to the set of documents. The veracity of a Radiometric Microwave Profiling Radiometer (MWRP) while mounted onboard a ship in the Arctic marine environment was assessed. The MWRP was validated against radiosonde data by calculating the RMS and bias for simultaneous measurements taken for temperature and absolute humidity profiles. The vertical resolution of the MWRP was calculated using the inter-level covariance method. Based on the comparisons, the MWRP provided reliable measurements of both temperature and absolute humidity while mounted on the CCGS Amundsen. Satellites CloudSat and Calipso were assessed over the Arctic marine cryosphere. Temperature and absolute humidity from the ECMWF-aux data product was compared with profiles from the ship based MWRP. The cloud base heights measured by the ceilometer and MWRP were compared to CloudSat and Calipso's GeoProf-lidar. Due to a large number of possible false detections, the constraints used by the GeoProf-lidar data product for cloud detection may need to be further refined.

Physical Conditions in a Galactic Star forming region W22

This document describes study of an active star forming region in our galaxy (the Milky Way) known as W22. Physical conditions in these regions can help us in understanding star formation processes in the universe and hence the structure and evolution of the universe. Zeeman effect measurements in 18 cm OH absorption line were carried out in order to estimate the line of sight magnetic field strength in the molecular cloud associated with this star forming region. Other physical parameters such as hydrogen column density, optical depth, critical magnetic field were also determined from these measurements. The region was mapped at 18 cm and the distribution of molecular gas within this star forming complex was described.

Cette thèse explore l'utilisation de croquis et d'annotation pour contrôler la modélisation 3D d'objets complexes (comme des chevelures, des arbres, des vêtements, etc). Nous introduisons une méthodologie basée sur trois idées princpales: Premièrement, le fait que l'expression de connaissances à priori sur l'objet modélisé peut être déterminante pour l'interprétation d'un croquis. Deuxièmement, l'idée que la chaîne de traitements doit se rapprocher au maximum de celle utilisée par un artiste, avec en particulier une esquisse de la forme globale avant que les détails ne soient précisés. Troisièmement, le fait que la structure 3D sous jacente peut soit servir de base au croquis (ils s'agit alors d'une technique d'annotation), soit être inférée à partir des silhouettes tracées par l'utilisateur, ce qui réduit grandement la quantité d'information à donner. Nous illustrons cette méthodologie en détaillant quatre exemples d'application: la modélisation par croquis de vêtements (pour laquelle sont comparées différents niveaux de connaissances a priori), de chevelures, de nuages et d'arbres.

The initial conditions of clustered star formation: an observational study of dense gas in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud

In this dissertation I present a detailed survey of molecular line emission (including NH3, C2S, HC5N, N2H+, N2D+ and H2D+) towards clustered star forming Cores in the nearby Ophiuchus molecular cloud, with the aim of characterizing the distribution and kinematics of the dense gas within a clustered star forming environment and compare these results with those found in more isolated star forming regions. I show that the dense Oph Cores present characteristics of both isolated and clustered star forming regions in several key parameters, including Core kinematics, temperatures and chemistry. At the higher gas densities where the N2H+ emission is excited, I show that the presence of an embedded protostar is correlated with increased gas motions. I additionally present evidence of N2H+ depletion from the gas phase, suggesting that in higher density, clustered environments N2H+ may not accurately trace the physical conditions of the densest core gas. I present the distribution of H2D+ and N2D+ across the Oph B Core, and show the distribution is not simple or easily explained by chemical models of evolving, isolated cores. Finally, I summarize the results of this dissertation, the questions it raises concerning the exploration of how stars form in clusters, and discuss how these questions may be answered through upcoming observational surveys and by new telescope facilities.

Spin-orbit coupling and the related effects of A-doubling and spin-splitting have been well known to spectroscopists for some considerable time. The importance of these phenomena stems from the advent of radioastronomy and the study of the interstellar medium. Identification of the molecules, and the molecular transitions, in the interstellar dust clouds is necessary for an understanding of the cooling process by which these clouds can contract to form new stars.
