Improving the convergence of IP routing protocols

The IP protocol suite has been initallyi designed to provide best effort reachability among the nodes of a network or an inter-network. The goal was to design a set of routing solutions that would allow routers to automatically provide end-to-end connectivity among hosts. Also, the solution was meant to recover the connectivity upon the failure of one or multiple devices supporting the service, without the need of manual, slow, and error-prone reconfigurations. In other words, the requirement was to have an Internet that "converges" on its own. Along with the "Internet Boom", network availability expectations increased, as e-business emerged and companies started to associate loss of Internet connectivity with loss of customers... and money. So, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) relied on best practice rules for the design and the configuration of their networks, in order to improve their Quality of Service. The goal of this thesis is to complement the IP routing suite so as to improve its resiliency. It provides enhancements to routing protocols that reduce the IP packet losses when an IP network reacts to a change of its topology. It also provides techniques that allow ISPs to perform reconfigurations of their networks that do not lead to packet losses.

Les algorithmes génétiques sont des méthodes d'optimisation destinées à des problèmes complexes. Ils peuvent jouer un rôle intéressant dans le cadre de la protéomique. Cette discipline est assez récente, elle étudie le patrimoine en protéines des individus. Elle produit des données de grande dimension. <br />La première partie aborde l'histoire, le fonctionnement des algorithmes génétiques et certains résultats théoriques. La partie suivante détaille la mise au point d'un tel algorithme pour la sélection de biomarqueurs en spectrométrie de masse et l'alignement de gels d'électrophorèse 2D. Cette partie met en évidence la difficulté de construction du critère à optimiser. La dernière partie aborde des résultats théoriques. La convergence des algorithmes génétiques avec élitisme est démontrée dans le cas non homogène et de mutations dirigées. Nous avons ensuite construit un critère de convergence alliant fondements théoriques et applicabilité, basé sur les occurrences de la solution localement optimale. Enfin, l'efficacité de l'introduction d'événements catastrophiques dans la résolution pratique de certains problèmes de convergence est montrée.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Late Quaternary Paleoclimatology with an Emphasis on Sub-Saharan West Africa and the Last Interglacial Period

A primary goal of paleoclimatology is to extend the instrumental record to capture a wider range of natural variability, documenting the climate system's response to past changes that have no analog in the historical record. Sediment archives of the recent geologic past, both marine and lacustrine, offer the opportunity to study how climate responds to a range of forcings and changing boundary conditions on timescales ranging from years to millennia. In this dissertation I use lacustrine and marine sediment to investigate changes late Quaternary climate, with particular focus on the Last Interglacial period (LIG). First, I use multiple approaches to reconstruct long-term changes in the West African Monsoon by investigating centennial-scale hydrologic variability recorded in Lake Bosumtwi sediments over the past 530,000 years. Over this interval, hydrology in the region is driven by a complex interplay of orbital forcing and glacial-interglacial boundary conditions. Lake level was generally much lower between 50 and 300 ka, likely due to the redistribution of rainfall from the tropics to the subtropics, driven by eccentricity's amplification of precession. Consequently, the Holocene highstand at the lake was both larger and longer lived than the maximum highstand during the LIG.Annual layers were continuously deposited through the LIG in Lake Bosumtwi, and I also present a new, 12,100 year-long, varve record spanning the interval from 128.6 to 116.5 ka. Over the course of the LIG, lake level generally tracks sea surface temperatures (SST) in Gulf of Guinea, including an abrupt drop in lake level that lasted about 500 years ca. 118 ka, coincident with cool SSTs in the North Atlantic and severe aridity in Europe. I find that the despite the generally drier conditions, hydrology varied on similar timescales as the late Holocene, with pronounced multidecadal to centennial-scale variability with non-stationary periodicities. I also investigate the contribution of ocean thermal expansion to sea level rise during the LIG, using a synthesis of paleoceanographic data and a climate model simulation. Globally, LIG SSTs were similar to, or slightly cooler than late Holocene SSTs, with the exception of the North Atlantic, which was several degrees warmer. Consequently, thermal expansion was likely a minor component of sea level rise during the interval, explaining between -0.3 and 0.4 m. of the 6 to 8 m highstand. Lastly, I tested the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a new, non-destructive technique to rapidly measure oxygen isotopic ratios in carbonates at extremely high resolution. Analyses on a suite a synthetic calcites indicate that ¹⁸O/¹⁶O ratios can be measured directly from the Raman spectra and have a 1:1 correspondence with traditional mass-spectrometry measurements. At present, the technique does not have the precision necessary to record natural variability, although there is considerable potential for improving the precision of the technique.

Against the Grain: Globalization and Agricultural Subsidies in Canada and the United States

This thesis investigates whether developments associated with globalization and regional integration have caused the levels of government support provided to agricultural producers in Canada and the United States to converge in a downward direction. The literature is sharply divided as to whether governments retain the ability to pursue an independent agricultural policy course. To shed light on this debate, the levels of government assistance payments made to farmers in six contiguous Canadian provinces and American states (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana) are compared over the 1990-2001 period. This time-frame allows for sufficient periods both before and after the establishment of NAFTA and the WTO to study the effects of these developments on the relevant policy outcomes. After outlining the programs and policy changes that drove the shifts in levels of government support provided to farmers, the paper argues that although the levels of government payments made to farmers in the six sub-units converged in the mid-1990s, they diverged thereafter. The evidence drawn from this examination supports the contention that governments do possess considerable room to manoeuvre in the agricultural policy making arena and significant ability to chart an independent policy course.

Convergence of time averages near statistical attractors and ratcheting of coupled oscillators

In this thesis, convergence of time averages near statistical attractors of continuous flows are investigated. A relation between statistical attractor and essential Ω-limit set is proved, and using this a general definition for statistical attractor is given. Sufficient conditions are given for an observable to admit a convergent time average along the orbits of the flow. The general results are applied to flows on a torus, and in particular to systems of coupled phase oscillators that admit attracting heteroclinic networks in their phase space. A particular heteroclinic network that we call heteroclinic ratchet is observed and analysed in detail. Heteroclinic ratchets give rise to a novel phenomenon, unidirectional desynchronization of oscillators (ratcheting). The results obtained about the convergence of time averages near statistical attractors implies that heteroclinic ratchets induce, besides its other interesting consequences, frequency synchronization without phase synchronization. Different coupling structures that can give rise to ratcheting of oscillators are also investigated.

What are the Effects of the New Revenue Recognition Accounting Standard on Software Companies?

This thesis examines the various impacts of the new revenue recognition accounting standard on software companies. It begins by explaining why the FASB and IASB updated the existing revenue recognition standard and then compares and contrasts the legacy GAAP to the upcoming GAAP standard. It then moves into a detailed analysis of the key changes affecting the software industry, specifically: intellectual property, the elimination of vendor specific objective evidence, and the principal versus agent consideration. Additionally, it examines software as a service in comparison to the historical model of software as a product and how the new standard will impact the direction of the software industry. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of investor considerations and how the standard will impact users of the financial statements. While there is abundant knowledge of the accounting change within the accounting industry, there is less knowledge and almost no quantifiable information for the public, which based on the various changes detailed, will result in a surprising material effect on software company financial statements.

4d Strain Path Recorded In The Lower Crust During The Transition From Convergence To Continental Rifting, Doubtful Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand

ABSTRACT Doubtful Sound, in SW New Zealand, exposes an exhumed section of lower crust that represents the root of an Early Cretaceous magmatic arc. Here, the lower crust underwent a change from contraction to extension and these tectonic cycles are fundamental to the growth of continental crust. Mafic-intermediate granulite gneisses occur below the extensional Doubtful Sound shear zone (DSSZ) which records the retrogression and transposition of granulite fabrics at the upper amphibolite facies. I compared 3D rock fabrics, microstructures and textures within and below the DSSZ to determine the processes involved in the shift from contraction to extension and to infer the sequential processes of transforming L>S granulites to L=S amphibolites. Below the DSSZ, dehydration zones around felsic veins and leucosome in migmatitic orthogneiss record granulite facies metamorphism. Aggregates of clinopyroxene (cpx) and orthopyroxene (opx) that are rimmed by garnet (grt) and interstitial melt are set in a plagioclase (pl) matrix. Peritectic grt, pl-grt symplectites, beads of pl along grain boundaries, and elongate, inclusion-free pl reflect the anatexis. Pl exhibits a crystal preferred orientation (CPO) and evidence of subgrain rotational recrystallization and grain boundary migration, indicating subsolidus deformation outlasted melting. Mafic aggregates are boudinaged and opx developed subgrains. During peak metamorphism high strain was partitioned to locations enriched in melt, producing L>S fabrics and an upward trajectory in the strain path. A comparison of mineral grain shapes indicates that pl accommodated most of the strain. Granulite-amphibolite transitional rocks inside the DSSZ record a heterogeneous retrogression of the granulites to a polyphase metamorphic assemblage of hornblende (hbl), biotite (bt), and fine pl. Also preserved is the resetting of high strain L>S granulite to low strain, L=S amphibolite. Folia of porphyroblastic hbl + bt progressively penetrate the pl matrix via solution mass transfer. Porphyroblastic pl in the rock matrix becomes increasingly transposed to gneissic layering. A path of decreasing gradient from high strain L>S granulite to low strain L=S amphibolite reflects the development of the DSSZ fabric, growth of new minerals and onset to deformation at the amphibolite facies. Inside the DSSZ, amphibolites show an increasing strain gradient from low strain L=S amphibolite to high strain L=S amphibolite. Pl aggregates lack a CPO and are mostly annealed but preserve grain boundary migration microstructures. Hbl is recrystallized and forms asymmetric fish. Evidence of high fluid activity and reaction softening within the DSSZ include increased hbl + bt and bt beards on pl relative to rocks outside the DSSZ. My observations suggest that magma, heat, and melting initially weakened the lower crust, facilitating the development of high strain zones with L>S fabrics. Partially molten regions deformed by suprasolidus flow and solid portions deformed mostly by dislocation creep in pl and boudinage of cpx + opx. Later, the lower crust was weakened and high strain fabrics were reset from overprinting and transposition as retrogression progressed and low strain L=S fabrics formed. During extension there was an upward trajectory in the strain path to high strain L=S fabrics within the DSSZ, where hbl and bt accommodated more strain. My results illustrate the importance of 1) melting, cooling, and hydration in controlling strain partitioning and the rheological evolution of lower crustal shear zones, and 2) the importance of integrating microstructural and fabric analysis to determine strain paths.
