Black adolescents’ critical encounters with media and the counteracting possibilities of critical media literacyUnknown Date (has links)
This transformative mixed-methods research study, uniquely designed as a 12-week curriculum to facilitate critical media literacy, drew upon the principles of critical pedagogy to investigate Black adolescents ‘perceptions of the impact of media on their racial identities. Responding to the high rate of media consumption among Black youth, the Critical Encounters Unit engaged 79 Black high school students in the southeast United States in examining how they made sense of their media encounters. Data on participants ‘perceptions of the role media plays in constructing Black identities and societal perceptions of Blacks were gathered through pre-post study surveys of all participants‘ self-identities and media literacy, interviews with 15 participants, 467 student journals, and 15 video observation field notes. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015 / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Rizikové chování na sociálních sítích a jeho prevence u žáků základních a středních škol / Risky Behaviour of Elementary and Secondary School Pupils on Social Networks and Its PreventionBotlík, Tomáš January 2019 (has links)
The following final thesis "Risky behaviour of lower and upper secondary school students on social networks and its prevention" introduces the topic of primary prevention of cyberbullying and security on social networks with regards to their current use by lower and upper secondary school students. Another aim of the thesis is to ascertain which forms of risky social behaviour the target groups currently encounter on social networks and to find out the ways in which these social networks are used (the most commonly used applications, the frequency of their use etc.). The thesis doesn't focus solely on social networks, it also addresses the subject matter of critical thinking since one of the problematic aspects of using social networks by young people is the fact that they use multiple sources of information without further verification. Following the results of the research, short-term activities of primary prevention for both target groups are proposed. They aim to encourage the development of critical thinking and media studies. The proposed activities can be further incorporated into long-term prevention programmes. They include recommendations for teacher lesson planning and self-study tips. The content of the activities is based on the study of both theoretical and methodological...

The pedagogy of Célestin Freinet In the development of the critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills, as well as the acquisition of knowledge in a group of students in college schools in SyriaMoubarak, Jalal 17 March 2017 (has links)
Through this research, we are looking to develop Critical Thinking Skills and Creative Thinking Skills, as well as the acquisition of knowledge in a group of students in college schools in Syria, through the application of the Freinet method in the learning process. To validate the hypothesis of the research, we taught two groups – control & experimental – of students a unit of a science S.V.T. manual. Two styles were used: the first group was taught by the traditional method (control group), the second taught by the method of Freinet (experimental group). To measure the development of the Critical Thinking Skills and the Creative Thinking Skills in students, we designed two tests: the first, to measure the Critical Thinking Skills, and the second, to measure the Creative Thinking Skills. To measure the development of the students' level of knowledge acquisition, we designed a traditional test about the information contained in the educational unit in the S.V.T. book. The results of this study showed the effectiveness of this method in developing five skills of the critical thinking in students (inference, assumption, deduction, interpretation, and evaluation of the argument). The study also showed the effectiveness of this method in developing three skills of the creative thinking in students (originality, fluidity, and flexibility). In addition, the results of this study showed that the teaching by the Freinet method has contributed to the development of students' level of knowledge acquisition.

Avaliação do pensamento crítico e da presença cognitiva em fórum de discussão online / Evaluation of critical thinking and cognitive presence in online discussion forumAraujo, Elenise Maria de 14 November 2014 (has links)
The usually large number of posts in educational forums leads to an information overload, which hinders forum organization and communication among members while undermining the effectiveness of learning assessment. Considering the need for a methodological solution applicable to the context of Brazil\'s online distance learning (ODL), there was conducted a review of the literature on organizational models and processes of analysis of messages involving indicators of critical thinking and cognitive presence skills (Garrison et al., 2001) and the Socratic inquiry dynamics (Paul, 1993). This study proposes a new forum model entitled FSC (Cognitive Socratic Forum), which comprises a method for assessing students\' cognitive presence and critical thinking skills in online higher education. The methodological procedures and evaluation grid were applied to two specialization courses on ODL in 2011, 2012, and 2013 at a higher education institution associated with UAB (Brazil\'s Open University). The methodology involved principles of lexicometry, documentary, textual and statistical analysis, linear regression models, and complex networks. Analysis was conducted on 3,400 messages posted by 544 students to investigate dependency relationships between the response variable \'grade\' and the following co-variables: concepts, Garrison\'s categories, Socratic topics, vocabulary richness, and classroom (tutor). Two linear regression models and 136 complex networks were constructed to enable confirmation of ANOVA tests employed to assess student performance in forums. The co-variables concepts, Garrison\'s categories, and classroom displayed positive significance levels when associated to students\' final grades. Therefore, it may be concluded that the proposed FSC model promoted students\' ability to express and communicate the concepts covered in the specialization course and contributed to effectively assessing their cognitive presence and critical thinking skills in online forums.

Mathematical Instructional Practices and Self-Efficacy of Kindergarten TeachersSchillinger, Tammy 01 January 2016 (has links)
A local urban school district recently reported that 86% of third graders did not demonstrate proficiency on the Math Standardized Test, which challenges students to solve problems and justify solutions. It is beneficial if these skills are developed prior to third grade. Students may be more academically successful if kindergarten teachers have moderate to high self-efficacy when teaching lessons that focus on justifying solutions. Bandura's self-efficacy theory was incorporated into this study as the conceptual framework lens. Research questions were designed to investigate kindergarten teachers' instruction in mathematics that focused on justifying solutions, their self-efficacy in challenging students to justify solutions, and the identification of professional development. Voluntary participants for this study were selected from the 11 elementary schools in the district. Within the 11 elementary schools, there were 33 lead teachers who were invited to participate in the study and 7 agreed to participate in interviews and observations. The data were analyzed using both situation and strategy coding. The analysis of the data revealed a connection between professional development, self-efficacy, and instructional strategies. A relationship was identified between professional development and the teachers' ability to challenge students to problem solve and justify solutions. These findings may be valuable for early childhood stakeholders within the education field. Professional development tends to improve the self-efficacy of teachers and the instructional strategies they incorporate.

A Narrative Case Study Examining the Influences of Peer-led Team Learning on Student Critical Thinking Skill Acquisition and Deeper Process Content Knowledge in a Midsize Texas University Humanities and Social Sciences ProgramPratt, Daniel E 20 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation will examine the efficacy of peer-led team learning (PLTL) in a humanities and social sciences program, at a midsize Texas university. It will be conducted exclusively within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), and the academic subjects to be evaluated include English, history, and philosophy. Its primary function is to disclose whether or not PLTL facilitates in student participants improvement in critical thinking skill acquisition and deeper process content knowledge. Of primary interest in this qualitative, narrative case study is deducing how breakout sessions – supplementary meetings led by student participants, in the absence of instructors, designed to enhance classroom instruction – aid in concept synthesis and retention. Of equal importance is evaluating how the implementation of a PLTL instructional framework cultivates in its participants the acuity necessary to demonstrate that positive learning outcomes are occurring, or have the potential to occur; thereafter, collected data, in the form of participant and instructor narratives derived from questionnaires, interviews, researcher observations, writing samples, and essay-based examinations will support or refute whether improvement in critical thinking skill acquisition and deeper process content knowledge is evident in student participants.
