The relationship between team-level aggression and basketball performance

Wright, Mary Ann 12 November 2009 (has links)
Previous research has indicated that aggression is generally detrimental to performance in the occupational domain (Campbell, 1990; James et al., 2005; Sackett, 2002; Viswesvaran et al., 1999). In certain athletic contexts, however, aggression may serve to enhance performance at the team level. For this analysis, team-level aggression is hypothesized to be positively related to team performance in basketball. Aggression in this context is defined as "the desire to inflict harm on another individual, group, or entity" (James, 2005, p.71). Both implicit (CRT-A) and explicit (NEO-PI-R) aggression were measured, and team performance was represented primarily by team scores. The data demonstrate that team-level implicit aggression is significantly and positively related to team performance, however team-level explicit aggression does not have a significant relationship with team performance.

ETHNIC IDENTITY AND FUNDS OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE SCHOLARSHIP OF LATINA FACULTY

Agrawal, Mariela 01 December 2014 (has links)
Mariela Agrawal Administration and Higher Education Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL 62901 Abstract The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the self-identity and funds of knowledge (fok) of eight Latina faculty in relation to their understanding and conceptualization of academic scholarship. Two broad questions guided this research. First, how do Latina faculty understand and conceptualize academic scholarship, and second, how do perceptions of identity and life experiences influence this conceptualization? The underrepresentation of Latinas in faculty positions and the devaluation of the social capital of Latino communities prompted me to explore the relationship between the participants' ethnic identity, life experiences/funds of knowledge, and scholarship. I collected the data for this study through two interviews with each participant, a focus group, and written narratives. These methods allowed the women in this study to reflect upon their experiences growing up, their obstacles and opportunities in their journeys in higher education, the people who supported and guided them through their academic career, and their experiences with racism and discrimination as people of color. The major findings in this study include the conceptualization of scholarship as an act of intellectual engagement with a purpose and the influence of ethnic identity in faculty's academic scholarship based on discipline. The major implications of this study include the need to distinguish immigrant from non-immigrant Latina faculty in educational research, the importance of support systems outside the family, the importance of role models, and the influence of fok in the success of Latina faculty. As this research is not exhaustive, I recommend extending it to include academic socialization of Latino doctoral students, ethnic identity in relation to classroom pedagogies, and epistemologies of faculty of color that influence academic scholarship.

Remoção de chumbo de monitores de tubo de raios catódicos

Oliveira, Erich Lopes Braitback de January 2013 (has links)
The disposal of CRT monitors increases each year, generating millions of tons of waste containing various types of materials. The glass present in CRT tubes contains about 20-25% of lead oxide. This glass can be leached if disposed improperly or directly in nature causing environmental contamination, especially with lead. Due to this possibility of leaching, this waste should be classified as Class I hazardous solid waste, according to the ABNT (Brazilian Standards). The aim of this work is to remove the lead from the glass matrix, enabling the glass recycling. The heat treatment of glass CRT tubes is seen as an alternative to removing lead from the glass matrix. Various reactions parameters such as reaction time, percentage of reducing agent, temperature and atmosphere of the reaction were studied in this work. It was concluded that it is possible to remove the lead from the glass matrix by thermal processes. The removal of 92% of lead from the funnel glass was obtained with vacuum, 5% of carbon as a reducing agent and 18 hours of thermal processing. The glass, after heat treatment, was again characterized in relation to dangerousness, being classified as non-hazardous waste.

Diagnóstico em BPM: uma investigação longitudinal sobre os resultados da aplicação da árvore da realidade atual em uma UPC / BPM diagnostic: a longitudinal reserch on the application of the current reality tree in a CRU

Elisa França Leôncio Alves 28 August 2017 (has links)
Among the phases of the Business Process Management (BPM) lifecycle, the process diagnostics phase can facilitate the change in order to support future efforts to increase productivity, standardize the execution of work and create a more efficient work routine. As a diagnostic technique, CRT (Current Reality Tree) is broader because it demonstrates the overall picture of the company\'s situation. The research question that intends to answer with this work is: how the diagnosis of the Current Reality Tree can promote improvements in a Clinical Research Unit (CRU)? The objective is to analyze the relationship between the application of CTR diagnosis and the improvements performed in a UPC. For that, a case study was used as a method in a UPC that used CRT as diagnostic tool for the implementation of organizational improvements. The results of this study present the diagnosis of CRT in a CRU and describe the improvements that occurred in the organization from the application of this technique. In addition, it is identified which BPM success factors contributed to the application of ARA. It is concluded that the use of ARA as a diagnostic technique, besides providing an analysis that considers the real needs of the organization, can be related to the success of the implementation of improvements. This study should provide support to UPC managers concerning to the effectiveness of the administrative practices that may be adopted, and it is important for researchers working with process and BPM diagnoses to introduce the effectiveness of the use of ARA as a technique and to relate the improvements obtained with the critical BPM factors.

Mapování vztahu mezi kognitivními funkcemi a inteligencí u osob se schizofrenií / The Mapping of a Relation between Cognitive Functions and Intelligence in Persons with Schizophrenia

Šimonová, Miriama January 2016 (has links)
Nowadays, an intelligence is a widely applied concept. The authors' opinions on its possible unification with or strict separation from the specific cognitive functions vary throughout different fields of psychology. Simultaneously, schizophrenia is a mental disorder, which is often connected to a cognitive deficit. Its assessment is usually realized on an estimation of the intelligence level. The aim was to explore how the estimation of intelligence corresponds with a cognitive profile of a patient with schizophrenia. This purpose is firstly being attained by a description of various views and theoretical objects, for instance core characteristics of a schizophrenia, a description of intelligence and selected cognitive functions. The empirical part is focused on an exploration of the relationship between a cognitive profile and the estimation of actual and premorbid intelligence of a patient with schizophrenia. A total of 120 persons with a diagnose F20 were included in this study. A cognitive profile was assessed with the usage of MATRICS battery and the intelligence levels were evaluated by selected WASI tests and Czech reading test (CRT). Results indicates that despite the level of premorbid and actual intelligence level was identified within the normal range, respondents evinced a cognitive...

The Impact of Mentoring in Closing the Achievement Gap for Black Male Students at a Predominantly White University in Tennessee

Harlan, Patricia Waire 01 May 2022 (has links)
This phenomenological study addressed the factors of an institutionalized peer to peer mentoring program that fostered academic success and persistence among Black male students graduating from a predominantly White four-year public university in Tennessee through the lens of the critical race theory. Data was gathered through face-to-face, open-ended, semi-structured interviews via Zoom with twelve participants that graduated between 2014 and 2022. Study participants were grouped into group 1 as those Black male students that were not impacted by the global pandemic and group 2 as those Black male students that were impacted by the global pandemic. Emerging themes and categories were identified by coding and analyzing the interview data. The themes that were identified were early intervention, impact of peer led mentoring, benefits of building strong relationships, safe spaces on campus, and the integration of mentorship programs into communities. The findings may provide higher education institutions with best practices models on how to further design or redesign strategies, policies, and practices that promote a mentorship culture that assist in the academic success for Black male students. The findings from this study may have implications relevant to the growing body of research on Black male achievers; as well as educational and community leaders; and policy makers on the development of practices, strategies, and recommendations to further provide effective mentorship programs that enhance Black male success on college campuses.

Relationships Between Classroom Schedule Types and Performance on the Algebra I Criterion-Referenced Test

Murray, Gregory V. 01 December 2012 (has links)
Public education has options with regard to educational settings and structures. States and school districts may select varying lengths for the school year, lengths for the school day, and lengths for individual class periods. In Utah, one measure of students' achievement is scores on the State's end-of-level criterion-referenced test (CRT) for Algebra I. Additionally, an option regarding educational structures is the schedule type used to deliver Algebra I classes. This study examined the relationship between student achievement as measured by Algebra I CRT scores, and the schedule type used to deliver Algebra I classes. The schedule types compared were the traditional daily schedule, trimester 3/3 schedule, trimester 2/3 schedule, and the block A/B schedule. This study sought to answer two research questions: (1) What is the relationship between mathematics instructional schedule type and student scores on Utah's CRT for Algebra I, for all students? and (2) What is the relationship between mathematics instructional schedule type and student scores on Utah's CRT for Algebra I, by individual grade levels? Data were obtained from the Utah State Office of Education and included the scores for 50,000 Utah students, from over 300 different schools, who took the identical Algebra I CRT at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. Data were also obtained from each school district to determine the schedule type of each participating student. Both a multinomial logistic regression analysis and a t-test analysis were conducted to determine relationships between Algebra I CRT scores and schedule types. The results indicated significant differences in student achievement based on the schedule type overall and for individual grade levels. Generally, the earlier the grade level the higher the CRT score. Within individual grade levels, there were both statistically significant and nonsignificant differences. The schedule types that generally score the highest (trimester 3/3 and traditional) had more time in the mathematics classroom and the students' mathematics class met daily. The results suggest the value of daily time spent in the mathematics classroom and may assist educators when considering options available to foster student achievement.

Effect of Negotiator Active Listening Skills on Crisis (Hostage) Negotiations

Guszkowski, Karen 01 January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of active listening skills on perpetrator response style in crisis negotiations. The extant literature boasts the utility of negotiations in crisis situations for law enforcement that came about in response to cataclysmic events such as the Attica Prison Riots (1971), Munich Massacre (1972), and the Williamsburg incident (1973). Various crisis negotiation models assert the importance of active listening skills in crisis negotiations; given the recent and voluminous media attention on police, this research aimed to provide further support for a cultural shift in police departments around the country to provide their officers with crisis negotiation training. These trainings allow officers to expand their arsenal of tools that decreases their need to rely on a tactical response when verbal de-escalation may be warranted to minimize risk to both officer and subject. The proposed study coded and analyzed audio recordings from the first 20 minutes of 12 simulated negotiations. The author proposed: (1) an increase in the proportion of active listening skills within the first phase of the negotiation would be associated with a decrease in the proportion of negative perpetrator response style in the second phase of the negotiation, (2) an increase in the proportion of active listening skills within the first half of the negotiation would be associated with an increase in the proportion of positive perpetrator response style in the second half of the negotiation, (3) an increase in the proportion of problem-solving utilized during the first phase of the negotiation would be associated with an increase in the proportion of negative perpetrator response style in remainder of the negotiation, and (4) an increase in the proportion of emotional labeling, paraphrasing and summarizing, and open-ended questions utilized during the first half of the negotiation would be associated with an increase in the proportion of positive perpetrator response style in the second half of the negotiation. While no significant results were identified via Pearson’s correlations, scatterplots were constructed for visual inspection of the data, which indicated potential support of hypotheses II and IV when considering the limitations of the study.
