Students' motivations and actions when they learn mathematics using CAS : a study using an activity theory approach.Periasamy, Jeevasundarie 29 February 2012 (has links)
I explore students‟ motivations towards using Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) in learning mathematics, their associated actions and the relationship between their motivations and actions. Leontiev‟s (1978) philosophy of needs, motives and goals provides a powerful theory within which to understand students‟ motivations and actions in a learning context mediated by tools, thus the study is located within the framework of Leontiev‟s activity theory. It draws particularly on his notions of activity, actions and operations, as well as on Western motivational concepts of achievement goal theory and expectancy-value theory. Specifically, the notions of mastery approach goal-orientations, performance approach goal-orientations and social goal-orientations are examined, as are task value components (comprising „importance‟ of task, intrinsic reasons and extrinsic utility value). I also discuss indexes of motivation, which comprise choice of tasks, effort and persistence. An important theoretical contribution of this thesis lies in the elaboration of the aforementioned Western motivational constructs to the activity theoretical construct of motives. The latter conception comprises three groupings: self-related, cognitive and social motives, as postulated by the activity theorist Lompscher (1999). Set within the qualitative research paradigm, this study utilises case study methodology. Methods of data collection include four interviews for each of the three participants, observations of the participants during two problem-solving sessions, and consequent computer screen analyses of these sessions. The mathematical problems involved the numerical solutions of differential equations using MATLAB. The participants were students studying towards vocational (diploma) qualifications in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at a comprehensive university in South Africa. My research illustrates the relationship between the expressed needs, motives and goals of the individuals regarding their involvement in the activity of using MATLAB in mathematical learning within a third semester, Mathematics 3 service course.

The CAS and NEPSY as measures of cognitive processes: examining the underlying constructsJarratt, Kelly Pizzitola 30 October 2006 (has links)
Although there appears to be increasing popularity in neuropsychology across
disciplines of study, only modest work has been conducted with preschool and schoolage
children. Changes in the structure of cognitive processes during early childhood and
the extent of frontal lobe maturation are important to consider when conducting
assessments with young children. Many neuropsychological theories, however, are based
primarily on adult research (e.g., LuriaâÂÂs theory) and respective assessment measures are
often the extension or slight modification of items from adult assessments. Because
adults and children differ on a number of neuropsychological measures, especially at
younger ages, the same underlying constructs and interpretive strategies may not be
appropriate for use with young children. The CAS and NEPSY are two assessment
measures based on LuriaâÂÂs theory; however, each posits a different conclusion regarding
the number of factors that explain neuropsychological functioning in young children.
Luria asserted that neuropsychological functioning is comprised of three functional
units, while Naglieri and Das (e.g., CAS) suggested a four factor model, and the authors
of the NEPSY declared a five factor model of functioning. Due to the emerging development of a childâÂÂs frontal lobes, and the inconsistency regarding the number of
factors related to neuropsychological functioning in young children, this study examined
the CAS and NEPSY using factor analyses and model fit indices to determine the
underlying structural model(s). The study also examined the usefulness of combining
specific subscales from the CAS, NEPSY, and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-III
(PPVT-III; Dunn & Dunn, 1997) to create a cross-battery approach to assessing
neuropsychological functioning in young children. In addition to the CAS, NEPSY, and
PPVT-III, data was obtained from the Behavioral Assessment System for Children
(BASC; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 1992), and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive
Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000) to gather background
information and to assess parent and teacher ratings of behavioral and
neuropsychological functioning.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Leishmaniasis are neglected tropical disease, caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, which according to the World Health Organization is endemic in many countries, including Brazil. Thus, the search for new alternatives to combat and control these parasitic diseases, are necessary. One of the current potential approaches are to study the biology of telomeres, which are tandemly repeated sequences associated with proteins located at the ends of the chromosomes of most eukaryotes. The main function of telomeres is to differentiate the chromosome end termini from double-stranded DNA breaks and thus, to protect the ends from degradation and damage repair mechanisms, which, at the end of each cell cycle, can result in loss of genetic material. The telomere biology studies of Leishmania have greatly improved our knowledge about this organism, in which the telomerase complex is composed minimally by a protein component, TERT, and by an RNA, TER. The functional characterization of these components is one of the goals of our research group. Such characterization is usually done by using inhibitory compounds specific to the function of these components or by gene manipulation, such as the CRISPR-Cas technology, which has enabled precise genomic alterations as well as the rapid and specific silencing of genes in different organisms, including Leishmania. Thus, we sought to observe the effects of inhibiting the L. major telomerase activity, using a specific TERT inhibitor, called BI... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre
