Atualmente, o serviço digital conhecido como Vídeo sob Demanda - Video on Demand (VoD) - está em ascensão e costuma requerer uma quantidade significativa de recursos físicos para a sua implementação. Para reduzir os custos de operacionalização desse serviço, uma das alternativas comumente usada é o emprego de proxies que cacheiam as partes mais importantes do acervo, com o objetivo de atender a demanda para esse conteúdo no lugar do servidor primário do sistema VoD. Nesse contexto, para melhorar a eficiência do proxy, propõe-se neste trabalho um novo algoritmo de cacheamento que explora o posicionamento dos clientes ativos para determinar a densidade de clientes dentro de uma janela de tempo existente em frente de cada trecho de vídeo. Ao cachear os trechos de vídeo com maior densidade em frente a eles, o algoritmo é capaz de alcançar um alto desempenho, em termos de taxa de acertos para as requisições recebidas pelo proxy, durante intervalos de alta carga de trabalho. Para avaliar esta abordagem, o novo algoritmo desenvolvido foi comparado com outros de natureza semelhante, fazendo uso tanto de métricas tradicionais, como a taxa de acertos, como também de métricas físicas, como, por exemplo, o uso de recursos de processamento. Os resultados mostram que o novo algoritmo explora melhor a banda de processamento disponível na arquitetura de base do proxy para obter uma taxa de acertos maior em comparação com os algoritmos usados na análise comparativa. Por fim, para dispor das ferramentas necessárias para construir essa análise, produziu-se uma outra contribuição importante nesse trabalho: a implementação de um simulador de proxies VoD que, até onde se sabe, é o primeiro a possibilitar a avaliação do hardware utilizado para implementar essa aplicação. / Today, Video on Demand (VoD) is a digital service on the rise that requires a lot of resources for its implementation. Finally, to dispose of the necessary tools to perform this analysis, we produced another important contribution in this work: the implementation of a VoD proxy simulator that, to the best of our knowledge, is the first one to enable the evaluation of the hardware used to implement this application.

Infinite CacheFlow: a Rule-caching Solution for Software Defined Networks

abstract: New OpenFlow switches support a wide range of network applications, such as firewalls, load balancers, routers, and traffic monitoring. While ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) allows switches to process packets at high speed based on multiple header fields, today's commodity switches support just thousands to tens of thousands of forwarding rules. To allow for finer-grained policies on this hardware, efficient ways to support the abstraction of a switch are needed with arbitrarily large rule tables. To do so, a hardware-software hybrid switch is designed that relies on rule caching to provide large rule tables at low cost. Unlike traditional caching solutions, neither individual rules are cached (to respect rule dependencies) nor compressed (to preserve the per-rule traffic counts). Instead long dependency chains are ``spliced'' to cache smaller groups of rules while preserving the semantics of the network policy. The proposed hybrid switch design satisfies three criteria: (1) responsiveness, to allow rapid changes to the cache with minimal effect on traffic throughput; (2) transparency, to faithfully support native OpenFlow semantics; (3) correctness, to cache rules while preserving the semantics of the original policy. The evaluation of the hybrid switch on large rule tables suggest that it can effectively expose the benefits of both hardware and software switches to the controller and to applications running on top of it. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Flash Caching for Cloud Computing Systems

As the size of cloud systems and the number of hosted virtual machines (VMs) rapidly grow, the scalability of shared VM storage systems becomes a serious issue. Client-side flash-based caching has the potential to improve the performance of cloud VM storage by employing flash storage available on the VM hosts to exploit the locality inherent in VM IOs. However, there are several challenges to the effective use of flash caching in cloud systems. First, cache configurations such as size, write policy, metadata persistency and RAID level have significant impacts on flash caching. Second, the typical capacity of flash devices is limited compared to the dataset size of consolidated VMs. Finally, flash devices wear out and face serious endurance issues which are aggravated by the use for caching. This dissertation presents the research for addressing these problems of cloud flash caching in the following three aspects. First, it presents a thorough study of different cache configurations including a new cache-optimized RAID configuration using a large amount of long-term traces collected from real-world public and private clouds. Second, it studies an on-demand flash cache management solution for meeting VM cache demands and minimizing device wear-out. It uses a new cache demand model Reuse Working Set (RWS) to capture the data with good temporal locality, and uses the RWS size (RWSS) to model a workload?s cache demand. Finally, to handle situations where a cache is insufficient for VMs? demands, it employs dynamic cache migration to balance cache load across hosts by live migrating cached data along with the VMs. The results show that the cache-optimized RAID improves performance by 137% without sacrificing reliability, compared to traditional RAID. The RWSS-based on-demand cache allocation reduces workload?s cache usage by 78% and lowers the amount of writes sent to cache device by 40%, compared to traditional working set based cache allocation. Combining on-demand cache allocation with dynamic cache migration for 12 concurrent VMs, results show 28% higher hit ratio and 28% lower 90th percentile IO latency, compared to the case without cache allocation.

Real-Time Vehicle Performance Monitoring with Data Integrity

A cornerstone of next generation intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is a seamless integration of in-vehicle networking with existing wireless telephony infrastructure. Remote access to on-board diagnostics and performance data is a crucial requirement for ITS. This thesis investigated the performance benefits of a data integrity buffering technique for an extensible vehicle position and performance tracking system (VPPTS). In support of this investigation, a VPPTS prototype was developed. The prototype used available technologies and interfaces to industry-standard communications channels and is a demonstration of a next-generation intelligent transportation system (ITS). The data integrity buffering technique under investigation was shown to provide quantitative improvements in successful VPPTS data transmissions. The use of this technique addressed important deficiencies in real-time data transmission for these types of systems over wireless networks.

Characterizing Web Response Time

It is critical to understand WWW latency in order to design better HTTP protocols. In this study we characterize Web response time and examine the effects of proxy caching, network bandwidth, traffic load, persistent connections for a page, and periodicity. Based on studies with four workloads, we show that at least a quarter of the total elapsed time is spent on establishing TCP connections with HTTP/1.0. The distributions of connection time and elapsed time can be modeled using Pearson, Weibul, or Log-logistic distributions. We also characterize the effect of a user's network bandwidth on response time. Average connection time from a client via a 33.6 K modem is two times longer than that from a client via switched Ethernet. We estimate the elapsed time savings from using persistent connections for a page to vary from about a quarter to a half. Response times display strong daily and weekly patterns. This study finds that a proxy caching server is sensitive to traffic loads. Contrary to the typical thought about Web proxy caching, this study also finds that a single stand-alone squid proxy cache does not always reduce response time for our workloads. Implications of these results to future versions of the HTTP protocol and to Web application design also are discussed. / Master of Science

Towards a Scalable Docker Registry

Containers are an alternative to virtual machines rapidly increasing in popularity due to their minimal overhead. To help facilitate their adoption, containers use management systems with central registries to store and distribute container images. However, these registries rely on other, preexisting services to provide load balancing and storage, which limits their scalability. This thesis introduces a new registry design for Docker, the most prevalent container management system. The new design coalesces all the services into a single, highly scalable, registry. By increasing the scalability of the registry, the new design greatly decreases the distribution time for container images. This work also describes a new Docker registry benchmarking tool, the trace player, that uses real Docker registry workload traces to test the performance of new registry designs and setups. / Master of Science

The object of this work is to create software implementing two algorithms for global ilumination computing. Iradiance and radiance caching should be implemented in CUDA framework on graphics card (GPU). Parallel implementation on GPU should dramatically improve algoritm speed compared to CPU implementation. The software will be written using already done framework for global illumunation computation. That allow to focus to algorithm implementation only. This work should speed up testing of new or existing methods for global illumination computing, because saving and reusing of intermediate results can be used for other algorithms too.
