A general computational tool for structure synthesisHe, Peiren 05 November 2008 (has links)
Synthesis of structures is a very difficult task even with only a small number of components that form a system; yet it is the catalyst of innovation. Molecular structures and nanostructures typically have a large number of similar components but different connections, which manifests a more challenging task for their synthesis.

This thesis presents a novel method and its related algorithms and computer programs for the synthesis of structures. This novel method is based on several concepts: (1) the structure is represented by a graph and further by the adjacency matrix; and (2) instead of only exploiting the eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix, both the eigenvalue and the eigenvector are exploited; specifically the components of the eigenvector have been found very useful in algorithm development. This novel method is called the Eigensystem method.

The complexity of the Eigensystem method is equal to that of the famous program called Nauty in the combinatorial world. However, the Eigensystem method can work for the weighted and both directed and undirected graph, while the Nauty program can only work for the non-weighted and both directed and undirected graph. The cause for this is the different philosophies underlying these two methods. The Nauty program is based on the recursive component decomposition strategy, which could involve some unmanageable complexities when dealing with the weighted graph, albeit no such an attempt has been reported in the literature. It is noted that in practical applications of structure synthesis, weighted graphs are more useful than non-weighted graphs for representing physical systems.

Pivoted at the Eigensystem method, this thesis presents the algorithms and computer programs for the three fundamental problems in structure synthesis, namely the isomorphism/automorphism, the unique labeling, and the enumeration of the structures or graphs.

Investigating the Correlation between Swallow Accelerometry Signal Parameters and Anthropometric and Demographic Characteristics of Healthy AdultsHanna, Fady 24 February 2009 (has links)
Thesis studied correlations between swallowing accelerometry parameters and anthropometrics in 50 healthy participants. Anthropometrics include: age, gender, weight, height, body fat percent, neck circumference and mandibular length. Dual-axis swallowing signals, from a biaxial accelerometer were obtained for 5-saliva and 10-water (5-wet and 5-wet chin-tuck) swallows per participant.
Two patient-independent automatic segmentation algorithms using discrete wavelet transforms of swallowing sequences segmented: 1) saliva/wet swallows and 2) wet chin-tuck swallows. Extraction of swallows hinged on dynamic thresholding based on signal statistics.
Canonical correlation analysis was performed on sets of anthropometric and swallowing signal variables including: variance, skewness, kurtosis, autocorrelation decay time, energy, scale and peak-amplitude. For wet swallows, significant linear relationships were found between signal and anthropometric variables. In superior-inferior directions, correlations linked weight, age and gender to skewness and signal-memory. In anterior-posterior directions, age was correlated with kurtosis and signal-memory. No significant relationship was observed for dry and wet chin-tuck swallowing

On Some Aspects of the Differential OperatorMathew, Panakkal Jesu 28 July 2006 (has links)
The Differential Operator D is a linear operator from C1[0,1] onto C[0,1]. Its domain C1[0,1] is thoroughly studied as a meager subspace of C[0,1]. This is analogous to the status of the set of all rational numbers Q in the set of the real numbers R. On the polynomial vector space Pn the Differential Operator D is a nilpotent operator. Using the invariant subspace and reducing subspace technique an appropriate basis for the underlying vector space can be found so that the nilpotent operator admits its Jordan Canonical form. The study of D on Pn is completely carried out. Finally, the solution space V of the nth order differential equation with leading coefficient one is studied. The behavior of D on V is explored using some notions from linear algebra and linear operators. NOTE- Due to the limitation of the above being in "text only form" , further details of this abstract can be viewed in the pdf file.

The Exponential Function of MatricesSmalls, Nathalie Nicholle 28 November 2007 (has links)
The matrix exponential is a very important subclass of functions of matrices that has been studied extensively in the last 50 years. In this thesis, we discuss some of the more common matrix functions and their general properties, and we specifically explore the matrix exponential. In principle, the matrix exponential could be computed in many ways. In practice, some of the methods are preferable to others, but none are completely satisfactory. Computations of the matrix exponential using Taylor Series, Scaling and Squaring, Eigenvectors, and the Schur Decomposition methods are provided.

Time Course of Evoked Action Representations Using Manipulable Upright and Rotated ObjectsKobelsky, Carrie 17 April 2015 (has links)
Evidence suggests that action representations associated with the functional and volumetric properties of an object are part of its conceptual representation (Bub, Masson, & Cree, 2008; Jax & Buxbaum, 2010). To further examine the dynamic interplay between functional and volumetric action representations during object perception, a series of experiments was carried out in which participants made a reach and grasp response in the context of an object pictured either upright or rotated. When trained to identify a colour cue as a prompt to make a specific hand action, with the cue presented at different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA), participants showed priming effects as early as 300 ms before the presentation of an upright object prime for both functional and volumetric actions. With pictures of hand posture cues, at similar SOAs, participants showed the same pattern of consistent priming effects for both actions types. Surprisingly, a dissociation between the action types occurred when the object primes were rotated, in that only the volumetric and not the functional action representation was evoked. Furthermore, at 0 ms SOA, the primed V-action was associated with the canonical rather than the depicted view of the object. The results clarify the dynamic pattern of F- and V-grasps evoked by visual objects. For upright objects, both F- and V-grasps are strongly evoked over time. Rotated objects show a tendency to evoke only volumetric action representation. The latter result suggests that the V-grasp associated with a rotated object is based on a skeletal form of the object that does not include its functional properties. / Graduate
