Tensile properties of Fe-3Mn-0·6/0·7C steels sintered in semiclosed containers in dry hydrogen, nitrogen and mixtures thereof

Cias, A., Mitchell, Stephen C., Pilch, K., Cias, H., Wronski, Andrew S. January 2003 (has links)
Yes / Tensile properties of powder metallurgy 3% manganese-0·8% carbon (content of green compact) steels were determined following laboratory sintering in (nearly) full, semiclosed containers with no getter powders in dry, 0-100% hydrogen-nitrogen atmospheres. Manganese was mixed with the NC 100·24 sponge iron powder as low carbon ferromanganese and carbon as a graphite addition. Dogbone compacts were pressed at 660 MPa, the sintering temperatures were 1120 and 1250°C and cooling rates ∼65 K min- 1. In specimens sintered in nitrogen containing atmospheres at 1120°C, final carbon content was ∼0·7% and for those processed at 1250°C ∼0·6%. Sintering in dry hydrogen resulted in lower carbon and oxygen contents. Independent of the H2/N2 ratio in the furnace atmosphere, however, all the specimens were ductile and exhibited similar strengths. Yield strengths R 0·2 were in the range: 426-464 MPa, tensile strengths Rm were 724-780 MPa and strains to failure were 1·6-2·0% after sintering at 1250°C. The 1120°C sintering temperature resulted in 10-15% lower strength values. The microstructures, significantly devoid of oxide networks, comprised mainly mixtures of bainite and fine (divorced) pearlite, with very little martensite and retained austenite. Reproducibly successful sintering of manganese containing compacts requires that reduction conditions exist at the sintering temperature. Ellingham Richardson diagrams dictate that the dewpoints of hydrogen required are-55 and-40°C at 1120 and 1250°C, respectively. A semiclosed container, how ever, ensures a different microclimate. It is suggested that then the initial relevant reactions there are: Mn[vapour]+H2O=MnO+H2, 3Fe2O3 +H2= 2Fe3O4+H2O, Fe3O4+H2=3FeO+H2O, FeO+H2= Fe+H2O and C+O2=CO2, which provide hydrogen andwater vapour, also within the pores. The manganese vapour further acts as a ‘shield’ by generating further hydrogen from the water vapour. The following reactions involving carbon monoxide are postulated above 927°C, when CO is a more effective reducing agent than hydrogen: C+H2O=H2+CO, 3Fe2O3+ CO=2Fe3O4+CO2, Fe3O4+CO=3FeO+CO2, FeO+CO=Fe+CO2 and C+CO2=2CO. Accordingly, irrespective of whether it is hydrogen or nitrogen in the semiclosed container, if there is a supply of carbon, reducing conditions prevail at the sintering temperature, embrittling oxidenetworks arenot formed and ductile manganese steels are processed.

Two methods for processing an ultrafine ferritic grain size in steels and the thermal stability of the structure

Pan, L. (Longxiu) 19 October 2004 (has links)
Abstract In this thesis, methods to process ultrafine ferritic (UFF) structures in steels, i.e. grain sizes below about 3 μm have been investigated. It is shown here, in accordance with the results in the literature, that a steel with a UFF grain size can be obtained by two methods, more or less convenient to mass production: deformation-induced ferrite transformation from fine-grained austenite (the DIF route) and the static recrystallization of various heavily cold-worked initial microstructures (the SRF/SRM route). In the present work, the influencing factors in the processing of UFF structure in the DIF route have been systematically studied in four low-carbon steels: one C-Mn steel and Nb, Nb-Ti and Nb-high Ti microalloyed steels. A high strain, a low deformation temperature close to Ar3 and a fine prior austenite grain size are beneficial to promote the formation of UFF grains. Especially by using complex pretreatments to refine the prior austenite grain size, cold rolling, repeating the low-temperature reheating cycle or using martensitic initial microstructure, a UFF grain size can be obtained in these steels at the strain of 1.2 (70% reduction) at 780 °C. By controlling the cooling rate, the type of the second phase can be adjusted. When using the static recrystallization route, it was found that UFF is difficult to obtain from a single-phase ferrite, but it is relatively readily obtained from deformed pearlite, bainite or martensite, especially in high-carbon steels with 0.3–0.8%C. In deformed pearlite, the cementite lamellae fragmented and spheroidised in the course of heavy deformation can provide numerous nucleation sites by the particle stimulated nucleation mechanism and retard the subgrain and recrystallized grain growth. Nucleation and retardation of grain growth are effective also in deformed bainite, martensite or high-carbon tempered martensite, as discussed in detail in the work. The thermal stability of UFF grained steels was tested and found to be generally excellent, but it varies depending on the processing method. The UFF structure obtained by the SRM route has a thermal stability somewhat weaker than that of the DIF route. For a given steel, UFF grains may show different grain growth modes, related to the dispersion of second phase particles. In the DIF structure, abnormal grain growth occurs at 700 °C after about 2.5 h, while in the SRM structure, normal grain growth takes place slowly at 600 °C. Carbides on the grain boundaries seem to play an important role in inhibiting grain coarsening. No coarse-grained zone was formed at the HAZ of electron beam or laser welded seams, as performed at low heat inputs (up to 1.5 kJ/cm) on thin strips. The hardness even increased from the base metal towards the HAZ and the weld metal in all seams as an indication that they were hardened during the rapid cooling.

Does Bainite form with or without diffusion? : The experimental and theoretical evidence

Kolmskog, Peter January 2013 (has links)
With the increased interest in bainitic steels, fundamental understanding of the bainite transformationis of major importance. Unfortunately, the research on bainite has been hampered by an oldcontroversy on its formation mechanism. Over the years two quite different theories have developedclaiming to describe the bainite transformation i.e. the diffusionless and the diffusion controlledtheory. In this thesis, attention is directed towards fundamental understanding of the bainitetransformation and both experimental and theoretical approaches are used in order to reveal its truenatureIn the first part of this thesis the symmetry in the Fe-C phase diagram is studied. It is based on ametallographic mapping of microstructures using light optical microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy in a high carbon steel. The mapping revealed symmetries both with respect to temperatureand carbon content and an acicular eutectoid with cementite as the leading phase was found andidentified as inverse bainite. By accepting that all the eutectoid microstructures forms by diffusion ofcarbon, one may explain the existence of symmetries in the Fe-C phase diagram. Additional supportof its existence is obtained from an observation of symmetries in an alloyed steel. From the performedwork it was concluded that the existence of symmetries among the eutectoid microstructures fromaustenite supports the idea that bainite forms by a diffusion controlled transformation. In the second part the growth of bainite is considered. An experimental study using laser scanningconfocal microscopy was performed and growth rates of the transformation products from austenite ina high carbon, high chromium steel was analysed. The growth rate measurements reveals the kineticrelation between Widmanstätten cementite and the acicular eutectoid previously identified as inversebainite which confirms its existence and the conclusions drawn in the first part. In addition, in-situobservations of bainite formation below Ms provide additional support for the diffusion controlledtheory for bainite formation. The final part of the work is a study of the critical conditions for the formation of acicular ferrite.Based on experimental information found in the literature a thermodynamic analysis is performed inview of the two theories. The results demonstrate that the governing process for Fe-C alloys cannot bediffusionless but both kinds of processes can formally be used for predicting Bs temperatures for Fe-Calloys. /
QC 20130503
