An exploration of career salience, career commitment, and job involvementSouthgate, Nicole Mary 27 October 2006 (has links)
Faculty of Humanities;
School of Psychology;
MA Dissertation / This study aimed to explore Blau’s (1989) Career Commitment Scale, Greenhaus’
(1971) Career Salience Scale, Kanungo’s (1982) Job Involvement Questionnaire and
how each of these outdated instruments may confound the concepts of career commitment, career salience, and job involvement.
A thorough analysis of the literature pertaining to these concepts was conducted in line with the definition of a career and how it has evolved over the years. Blau’s
(1989) Career Commitment Scale, Greenhaus’ (1971) Career Salience Scale, and Kanungo’s (1982) Job Involvement Questionnaire were all administered to a sample of 145 full-time store level employees at a large retail organisation in the Gauteng
region. After conducting correlations, partial correlations, and a factor analysis, the results from this study identified that there is a need for revising the three scales under investigation as the correlations found evidence to suggest convergence whilst the
factor analysis discovered a lack of discriminant validity amongst the three
instruments.
Having discussed these results, the implications for this work were mentioned, both theoretically and practically. Limitations of the study were acknowledged and future research directions were suggested.

Family and Cultural Influences on Latino Emerging Adults' Career DevelopmentRodriguez, Kristina 12 1900 (has links)
There is an extensive amount of research on career development, but most of the constructs studied have focused on content-oriented variables rather than process-oriented variables. While some of the studies have examined samples from ethnic minority populations, the majority of studies use ethnic minority populations as comparison groups, studying between-group differences as opposed to within-group differences. The literature is especially deficient in the are of Latino career development. The current study will examine how family and culture influence the career development of Latino emerging adults. This study will explore the influence of socioeconomic status and acculturation on the career salience and career maturity of Latino emerging adults. The quality of the parent-emerging adult relationship will also be explored for its influence on career development outcomes in this population. One hundred fifty Latino undergraduate students ages 18-24 will be recruited for participation in this study. The participants will complete questionnaires regarding demographic information, acculturation, the quality of the parent-emerging adult relationship, career salience, and career maturity.

Summaries in English, Zulu and Southern Sotho / The primary aim of the study was to explore the relationship between career adaptability and organisational commitment of employees who work in the investment sector. The secondary aim was to ascertain whether individuals from various demographics (age groups, gender, ethnicity, qualifications, tenure and business unit) differed significantly regarding their career adaptability and organisational commitment. A cross-sectional quantitative, correlational research approach was followed where a non-probability convenience sample (n=200) of permanent employees in the investment sector was used. The instruments used for the study were the biographical questionnaire, Career Adapt Abilities Scale (CAAS) and Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ).
The research results revealed statistically significant relationships between career adaptability and organisational commitment of employees who work in the investment sector in terms of correlational and inferential statistical analyses. There were statistically significant relationships between the demographic variables with some dimensions of career adaptability and organisational commitment. The test of mean differences revealed that some differences exist in career adaptability and organisational commitment in terms of demographical variables. The study provides recommendations for use by industrial psychology professionals in terms of career adaptability and organisational commitment practices, specifically within the investment sector. / Inhloso engaphezulu yalolucwaningo yabe ingukucubungula ubudlelwano phakathi kokuzinza ezifundweni-msebenzi nokuzibophela kwabasebenzi ezinkampanini zasengxenyeni yokukhulisa umnotho wezimali.
