Tendo em vista a importância desta representação nas obras carterianas, este trabalho pretende elucidar como se realiza a construção das personagens femininas e da ambientação (uma vez que esta também vai contribuir para a representação dessas personagens) da obra referida. As informações colhidas têm o intuito de esclarecer aspectos como, por exemplo, o estilo da autora, frequentemente associado à literatura fantástica e ao pósmodernismo, dialoga com a ideologia presente na obra, a saber, a crítica ao modelo patriarcal de sociedade, o qual muitas vezes impunha estereótipos e certos papéis sociais às mulheres. Assim, ao mesmo tempo em que sua obra se aproxima do caráter fantástico, Angela Carter não dissocia sua escrita do tecido social, criando, assim, um estilo de escrita único. Verifica-se, dessa forma, que assim como suas personagens, a autora, através da subversão, busca seu próprio espaço na Literatura / This dissertation intends to conduct an analysis of the female representation in Angela Carter’s novel The Magic Toyshop (1967), observing its relation with the elements present in the book. Considering the importance of this representation in the writer’s works, this dissertation aims to elucidate how the construction of female characters and the setting (since it will also contribute to the representation of these characters) of the referred narrative is done. The information obtained have the intention of clarifying certain aspects, such as the the dialogue between the author’s style, frequently associated with fantasy literature and post-modernism, and the ideology present in the novel: the critique of the patriarchal model of society, which often imposed stereotypes and social roles for women. Thus, at the same time that her work approaches the fantastic features, Angela Carter doesn’t dissociate her writing of the social context, creating an unique style of writing. O romance tem como elemento fundamental símbolos representados por imagens, objetos e lugares que vão revelar também ao leitor a possível crítica ao ambiente patriarcal, observada pela fuga da personagem feminina de uma espécie de confinamento, em busca de seu espaço. Considerando ainda a importância das significações para a obra literária, este trabalho também pretende elucidar como o símbolo é trabalhado na construção do espaço e das personagens femininas. No primeiro capítulo, abordamos brevemente a vida e obra da autora, como também a fortuna crítica produzida sobre o romance. No segundo capítulo, apresentamos um levantamento das principais teorias acerca da ficção científica distópica, pós-modernidade e feminismo. Ainda no segundo capítulo, buscamos analisar as personagens presentes na sociedade pós-apocalíptica e verificar as diversas vozes presentes na intertextualidade. No terceiro capítulo, utilizando teorias sobre a simbologia, analisamos os símbolos presentes no romance. Sendo assim, o trabalho também ressalta como a obra colabora para divulgar a crítica sugerida pela autora contra o modelo patriarcal de sociedade / This dissertation intends to analyze the symbols in the novel Heroes and Villains, published in 1969 by the British author Angela Carter. The novel has as a fundamental characteristic the use of symbols represented by images, possibly built as a criticism directed to the patriarchal society, bearing in mind the main character’s escape from her confinement. This work has the intention to shed a light on how the symbols are built to represent aspects such as space and the female characters. In the first chapter of this study, we touch briefly on the life and works of the author, as well as the critical pieces produced on the novel. In the second chapter we cover the most relevant theories concerning dystopian science fiction, post modernism and feminism. Still in the second chapter, we analyze the characters in the context of a post-apocalyptic society and their many voices in their intertextuality. The third chapter is dedicated to the analysis, using the theories on symbology, of the symbols present in the novel. Lastly, our intention is also to divulge the criticism of the patriarchal model of a society, as intended by the writer

No primeiro capítulo tratamos brevemente da vida e obra da autora, e também da fortuna crítica produzida sobre o romance. Ainda neste primeiro capítulo, procuramos analisar algumas das nomenclaturas ligadas à produção carteriana, como realismo mágico, pósmodernismo e feminismo, tendo como referência alguns estudos já realizados. No segundo capítulo, utilizamos teorias acerca da simbologia. O interesse é analisar alguns dos símbolos que aparecem no romance e são relevantes na leitura, pois deixam subentendidos alguns dos sentidos que a autora deseja transmitir. No terceiro capítulo, o interesse é demonstrar que nesta extensa narrativa de Angela Carter, as representações estão presentes e produzem o clima de espetáculo, fazendo do romance um verdadeiro circo / The present work presents an analysis of the novel Nights at the circus (1984), by the English writer Angela Carter, above all approaching the main character, Fevvers. In the first chapter we briefly deal with the writer´s life and work, and also with the critical works produced about the novel. Still in this chapter, we try to analyze some of the terminology related to Carter´s production, such as magic realism, post-modernism and feminism, taking as reference studies already done. In the second chapter, we use theories about symbology. The interest is to analyze some of the symbols which appear in the novel and are important during the reading because they let implicit some of the meanings that the author wants to transmit. In the third chapter the interest is to demonstrate that in this long Carterian narrative the representations are present and produce the spectacle mood, turning the novel into a real circus

This D.Phil constitutes an investigation led by studio practice and supported by archival and desk-based research into knowledge production through the building of complex cosmologies; specifically those created de novo in visual art practice and 'outsider science' oeuvres. It considers how these cosmologies relate to mainstream science, definitions of outsider art, and other complex cultural systems such as alchemy. Through a more detailed analysis of the work of the British artist John Latham and American outsider cosmologist James Carter, the thesis undertakes this investigation through discussions on the development of these systems and a consideration of the epistemologies these cosmologies reveal. The studio practice elements drive this investigation forward by interrogating themes including the relationship between culture and complex systems, alchemical epistemology, and the struggle to relate to unintuitive science.

abstract: The purpose of this research paper is to discuss John Carter's Cantata, the musical development of this composition, and provide a brief history of this African American musician and composer. Presently, there exists very little research regarding Carter's life and compositions. From a musician's perspective, this paper discusses the challenges of singing and performing the Cantata for future performers and provides a reference for their preparation. This project also examines John Carter's musical style and analyzes the structure of the Cantata. African-American folk songs were an inspiration to Carter's compositions, especially this particular work. As an African-American, his life and background played a role in his inspiration of composition. With borrowed music, he reveals a basic truth about this period of American history; how the lives of slaves influenced in the development of this particular genre. Additionally, John Carter's style of composition is examined, including the application of jazz and modal scales in his Cantata. Performance practice is examined for both the singer and pianist in a way that best represents the composer's original and unique intent. From vocal safety to breath control, a singer may find several challenges when performing this eclectic piece. This paper provides a guide for singers. A brief overview of the pianist's role in the Cantata is also included. Characteristic words of the African-American vernacular found in Carter's Cantata are briefly discussed and identified (i.e. "them" vs. "dem"). It is essential that any performer, both beginning and advanced, should have a proper understanding of the concepts that Carter had so carefully crafted. This paper endeavors to provide a deeper sense of understanding to what Carter had intended for both the performer and the listener. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012
