Job satisfaction, substance use, and gambling behaviour of northern Albertan casino employeesDangerfield, Lyndsey, University of Lethbridge. School of Health Sciences January 2004 (has links)
Relatively little is known about Canadian casino employees. The present study is a broad-based investigation intended to shed some light on this population. There were several specific areas of investigation. These included job satisfaction, substance use and abuse, gambling behaviour, gambling attitudes and beliefs, and problem gambling status. Because of this high-risk group’s excessive exposure to gambling, casino employees’ gambling behaviour may be indicative of the general adult population’s future gambling behaviour. Although there is some prior evidence of higher rates of problem gambling in this population, the causal direction of this relationship is not well established. That is, does working in a casino place employees at a higher risk for problem gambling, or does the industry actually attract problem gamblers?
The present study investigated the characteristics of 123 Canadian casino employees from two Alberta casinos. The study aimed to establish the actual impact of casino employment on substance use and gambling behaviour by means of a follow-up questionnaire that was distributed six months after the baseline questionnaire was collected. The results of the follow-up questionnaire tentatively suggest that problem gamblers are attracted to the casino industry, rather than the casino industry placing its employees at a higher risk for problem gambling. The study also found that Northern Albertan casino employees have higher rates of smoking, alcohol use, illicit drug use, medication use, gambling, and problem gambling than the general Albertan workforce. / viii, 140 leaves ; 29 cm. --

Gambling in South Africa, with specific reference to the Western Cape gambling policyHuman, Pieter 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For the purposes of this study the term "gambling" refers only to casino style
gambling and does not necessarily include horse racing and the national lottery.
The study is partly based on the theoretical model for policy analysis as described by
Dunn in his book "Public Policy Analysis" (1994). The thesis is divided into two
sections. The first section deals mainly with the stage of monitoring and is a
retrospective analysis of the development of the gambling industry in seventeenth
and eighteenth century Venice and more recently in the United States, Australia,
Namibia and South Afiica prior to 1994.
The last section deals mainly with the stage of policy evaluation and questions the
possible discrepancies between the expected and actual gambling policy
performance in the Western Cape after 1994 when large scale gambling was
legalised throughout the country. It uses the recommendations of the Main Report on
Gambling in the Republic of South Afiica (Wiehahn Report) as a basis for the
evaluation of the Western Cape gambling policy from both a social and economic
perspective. More specifically the study attempts to shed light on the issues of the
problems related to the scientific research of gambling, the economic profile of
gamblers, the location of casinos, the displacement of capital and the correlation
between crime and gambling.
verdeel in twee afdelings.
dobbel.

Social representations of institutional leaders about gambling in México / Representaciones sociales de líderes institucionales acerca del juego en casinos mexicanos / Representações sociais do líderes institucionais sobre o jogo em cassinos mexicanosEcheverría Echeverría, Rebelín, Castillo, María Teresita, Evia, Nancy, Carrillo, Carlos 14 December 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to analyze the social representations of different institutional leaders regarding the casino customers, their main motivations and role of the casino in daily life. The methodology was qualitative - phenomenological using semi-structured interviews. Participants were eight leaders of religious, political, and mental health institutions, and government officials. The results show that adult women are represented as the group with greater presence in the casinos. Loneliness and pathological gambling are part of the social representation of the players, with variations according to the institution that the leaders represent. The relevance of generating investigative processes that expand the concept of the games in casinos and impact on public health policies and socioeconomic development is discussed. THE FUTURE AUDIT OF INTERNET CASINOS (RSA): ANALYSIS CRUCIAL TO MITIGATING SIGNIFICANT RISK TO THE AUDITORVon Benecke, G January 2014 (has links)
Published Article / This paper synthesises, as its primary aim, through an integrative literature
review, a new perspective on two major implications of the proposed legalisation
of internet casinos in South Africa, which is: the effect on the auditor's business
risk as well as the effect on audit risk. As its secondary aim the paper argues that
legalisation of internet casinos in South Africa is imminent and that relative to
other business, heavy reliance will be placed on the external auditor to ensure
the internet casinos' compliance with various laws. The relevance and
application of an integrative literature review is motivated. International
perspectives are applied to the South African context. The paper demonstrates
the relationship between the concepts of the auditor's business risk and audit risk
by establishing that the auditor's business risk flows from possible accountability
that may stem from significant audit risk that is not addressed during the audit
engagement. The paper argues that the operational context of an internet casino
in South Africa will be relatively unique and that three interrelating factors will
create significant audit risk. The three significant factors are shown to be going
concern, regulatory and information technology impacts. Failure by the auditor to
recognise and respond appropriately to this audit risk may lead to serious
consequences for the practitioner which may include regulatory intervention,
reputational based losses or litigation. The impact of the International Standards
on Auditing in this context is explored throughout and it is concluded that
adherence to these standards will sufficiently mitigate significant audit risk as
well as the auditor's business risk.

Tesis

Spaces of social compulsion : a case study of the Sugarmill Casino, Durban.Singh, Renelle. January 2001 (has links)
This thesis explores gambling as a leisure activity and consumption experience. Casino
development in South Africa - formerly illegal in the country - is occurring at an
unprecedented rate. In 1996. the new democratic Govemment passed legislation to allow up
to forty casinos to be developed throughout South Africa. This was viewed as a means of
developing tourism as well as the input of revenue into the country's economy. South
Africa's gambling industry is now similar to that of the United States and Australia. Starting
with remotely situated casinos, accessible primarily to upper income clientele, legislation has
softened to allow for the licensing of casinos within the major urban areas of this country.
This has led to casino gambling being accessible to thousands of people, those who can
afford to indulge in this leisure activity and those who cannot.
This thesis explores the engineering of space to create an atmosphere of compulsion, and the
response of communities given access, for the first time, to casino gambling close to home.
The second legal casino in KwaZulu-Natal, the "SugarMill Casino", opened on 2 February
2001, on a temporary site in Mount Edgccombe, north of Durban, adjacent to the
predominantly Indian suburb of Phoenix. Phoenix was planned and developed in 1976, as a
residential area for the low-income Indian population. Therefore, the location of this casino
has been subject 10 much criticism.
This study looks at the symbolic economy of the SugarMill casino in terms of the symbols
used in marketing the casino as well as its architectural symbolism. The symbolic economy
of the casino uses locally based ' cultural capital ' to create a space of compulsion, through
space planning and marketing campaigns. Although the casino has only being in operation for
a short time, an important aim of this thesis is to determine whether these strategies are
working and why. The perceptions and attitudes of Phoenix residents towards the casino,
their use of and expenditure at the facility as well as the creation of problem or compulsive
gamblers are explored. The importance of gambling in relation to other leisure activities is
also assessed.
The findings of this study suggest that the architectural theme and symbols as well as the
marketing campaigns employed by the SugarMill casino have been successful in attracting
gamblers to the casino because the majority of respondents have visited the casino and gambled there. Whilst gambling is not the main leisure activity that respondents engage in, it
is certainly a significant form of leisure since forty-eight percent of the sample cited
gambling as their main leisure activity. Reasons for this vary but contribut ing factors include
the accessibility of the casino in close proximity to their homes as well as the general lack of
a variety of recreational alternatives in Phoenix. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.
