An investigation of families and breeding lines of Holstein-Friesian cattle in relation to advanced registry records

Reynolds, R. R. January 1915 (has links)
De Kol 2d, Pietertje Hengerveld and Belle Koendyke each have two daughters. For each daughter the following number of grand daughters are found. For Belle Korndyke 93.5, De Kol 2d 81.5 , and Pietertje Hengerveld 60.5. The following number of great-grand-daughters may be attributed to each grand-daughter: De Kol 2d 5.29, Belle Korndyke 3.11 and Pietertje Hengerveld 2.96. This shows De Kol 2d was more prepotent over her great-grand-daughters or her daughters were bred to better sires. The percent of the progeny found in each class clearly shows the prepotency of the progenitor. The most noticeable influence over the grand daughters of the first class was that of Belle Korndyke, having 16.52% of progeny in first class. De Kol ranked second and Pietertje Hengerveld third. In class two Belle Korndyke ranks first, De Kol 2d second, and Pietertje Hengerveld third. In classes three and four some change is order is noticeable; Pietertje Hengerveld ranks first, De Kol 2d second, and Belle Korndyke third. / Master of Science

Exploitation of nonadditive variance through nonrandom mating

DeStefano, Anita Louise 02 May 2009 (has links)
Mixed model equations to predict additive and nonadditive genetic values also predict specific combining abilities or combination effects among sire and dams or among sires and maternal grandsires (mgs). Current mating programs, utilizing nonadditive genetic variance only by avoiding mating between close relatives to prevent inbreeding depression, could be improved upon by use of predicted combination effects due to nonadditive variation beyond inbreeding. Simulation was employed to evaluate increase in progeny performance from nonrandom mating based on predicted combination effects among sires and mgs over random mating. Nonrandom mating strategies included mate allocation by linear programming, which is optimum, and two approximations, sequential selection based on progeny merit, and sequential selection based on deviation of progeny merit from mgs average. Genetic parameters were heritability equal to .05, .15, or .25 and ratio of dominance variance to phenotypic variance equal to .05, .10, or .15. These dominance ratios represent the range of recent estimates for yield and type traits. A total of 400 bulls were grouped by .99, .85, and .70 PTA reliability, with the first group being sires and mgs of the others. Using recurrence equations for combination effects, a matrix of true combination effects among the bulls was created. Reliabilites for estimated combination effects were computed for three types of bull populations; one with much information available (.41 to .79 ), one with little information ( .15 to .41 ) and one with an intermediate amount of information available (.15 to .79) and used to form matrices of estimated combination effects. Herds consisted of cows sired by .99 and .85 reliability bulls. Four mating groups of 123 cows, mated to 10 bulls from all bull groups, produced heifers to replace the herd. Herds were replicated 20 times for each type of bull population and each combination of heritability and dominance ratio. The three nonrandom mating strategies yielded means significantly different from random mating (p ≤ .05). When scaled by the standard deviation of milk yield, gains made by linear programming were 12.3 to 40.1 kg for low-reliability populations, 16.4 to 46.4 kg for intermediate reliability populations, and 31.0 to 80.3 kg for high reliability populations. Herds modified to utilize embryo transfer had less gain in progeny merit due to combination effects (20kg) with nonrandom mating compared to non-ET herds with identical heritability and dominance ratio, when donor cows were selected by estimated breeding value. Selection of donor cows based on combination effects yielded large gains (90.72kg) but such selection would only be justified in populations where nonadditive variance was more important than additive. A procedure for routinely approximating reliabilites of combination effects using information from three sources (information on parent subclasses, information on progeny subclasses, and records in subclass of interest) was presented. / Master of Science

A framework to integrate and analyse industry-wide information for on-farm decision making in dairy cattle breeding /

Archer, Alfred Ainsley. January 2000 (has links)
The goal of this thesis was to develop a framework that could integrate and analyse industry-wide information for the support of on-farm decision-making in dairy-cattle breeding. Specific objectives included (i) describing a dairy breeding information system (DBIS); (ii) examining how the Internet could be exploited to improve the DBIS and its functioning; (iii) describing a process for implementing a unified data model to facilitate integrated user access to information in the DBIS; and (iv) developing software to support decision-making by facilitating access to a unified data model when implemented as a database management software. / The first objective was achieved by following a systems approach---defining a goal, boundary, functions, structure and performance---to describe multi-organisational information systems and, specifically, a DBIS in the Canadian dairy industry. Using this framework, the subsequent analysis of the DBIS looked at its overall effectiveness. The DBIS was also compared with other known systems, where the number of participants (as well as their roles) differs from the Canadian situation. Improvements were suggested for the Canadian DBIS by focussing on the decision-maker's ability to retrieve, integrate and consider required information through information technologies. The second objective involved using the systems approach to investigate the kinds of information (if any) provided on Web sites of the DBIS participants, and to see if the Internet could be exploited to improve this process, either in terms of improved transfer speed or data transformation. It was established that the Internet is being used for rapid, flexible access to support information by DBIS participants, but that it is being under-utilised, particularly where herd output information is concerned. Herd output information could be filtered, integrated and transformed to support specific user needs at appropriate levels of intelligence density. It was further postulated that these data could be exploited more effectively through the use of such information technologies as common data exchange mechanisms and decision-support systems. The third objective was achieved through applying information engineering methods to develop a data model to represent the DBIS. This unified model was described in conceptual, logical and physical terms, and facilitated transparent access for on-farm users to information from more than one source organisation. It was demonstrated that such a model could maintain the autonomy of participating organisations while simultaneously creating an amalgamated databank for decisio

Production and reproduction performance of Jersey and Fleckvieh × Jersey cows in a pasture-based system

Goni, Sindisile 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Genetic selection for high milk production, type and appearance for the last 50 years has suppressed secondary traits such as reproductive performance, productive life, health and survivability in the pure milk breeds. The economic importance of these secondary traits in dairy production systems is the basis for the interest seen in crossbreeding. The problem of growth rate of heifers, cow fertility, reduced disease resistance and small body frame for beef production in Jerseys can be improved by crossing Jerseys with dual purpose breeds, such as Fleckviehs which possess a more beef potential. Against this background, this study aimed at comparing the production and reproduction of Jersey and Fleckvieh × Jersey cows in a pasture-based system. Milk recording was done according to standard milk recording procedures. Milk production (milk, fat, and protein yield) was adjusted to 305 days of lactation and corrected for age at calving. Effects of breed, parity, month and year were estimated for milk, fat and protein yield as well as fat and protein percentage using general linear models procedure. The fixed effects identified as having significant effects on milk, fat and protein yield were breed, parity and year. F×J cows produced significantly more milk than J cows (6141 ± 102 vs. 5398 ± 95 kg milk). Protein and fat yield were significantly higher in F×J (201 ± 3 and 272 ± 4 kg, respectively) than in J cows (194 ± 2 and 246 ± 3 kg, respectively). There percentages of fat and protein differed slightly between the two breeds with the Jersey recording slightly higher percentages (4.61 ± 0.04 and 3.62 ± 0.03 %, respectively) compared to the F×J cows’ percentages, which were, respectively, 4.47 ± 0.04 and 3.51 ± 0.03 %. It was concluded that F×J crossbred cows were more productive than purebred J cows probably owing to heterotic effects. Heifers were inseminated at 13 months of age and cows 40 days post-calving. Using insemination records and pregnancy check results, fertility traits were analyzed and compared between the two breeds, using analysis of variance for continuous records. Conception age was the same for both breeds resulting in a similar age at first calving. For cows, the interval from calving to first insemination was significantly shorter (P <0.001) in crossbred cows being 76.7 ± 2.2 days compared to 82.4 ± 2.5 days for purebreds. A larger proportion (P < 0.001) of 0.70 for crossbred cows was inseminated within 80 days after calving compared to 0.54 for J cows. Although the absolute number of days between calving and conception (DO) was lower for F×J cows in comparison to J cows (104.8 ± 6.8 vs. 114.8 ± 8.1days, respectively), the difference was not significant. However, the proportion of F×J cows confirmed pregnant by 100 days in milk was 0.79, which was higher (P < 0.001) than the 0.66 for J cows. Results indicate the potential of improving reproductive performance of J cows through crossing with dual-purpose breeds. The beef production of purebred J and Fleckvieh x Jersey (F×J) bull calves was compared, where bull calves were reared similarly for veal, i.e. carcass weight not exceeding 100 kg, or as steers for beef to 21 months of age. In both the veal and steer production systems, the mean birth weight were higher (P < 0.001) for crossbred in comparison to J calves and steers (33.5 ± 1.2 kg vs. 27.9 ± 1.2 kg for veal) and (33.4 ± 0.9 kg vs. 26.9 ± 0.9 kg for steers) respectively. The live weight at 6 months of age was 163.5 ± 3.9 kg for J bull calves, which was lower (P < 0.001) than that for F×J bull calves (180.6 ± 4.0 kg). The F×J bull calves had a significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) of 0.82 ± 0.02 kg/day compared to 0.73 ± 0.02 kg/day for J bulls. Marketing age differed (P < 0.001) in the veal production system with F×J and J bull calves marketed at 7.1 ± 0.1 and 6.3 ± 0.1 months, respectively. End live weight at 21 months of age was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in F×J bulls (441.4 ± 14.9 kg) than the 322.6 ± 13.4 kg in J bulls; while ADG differed (P < 0.001) between the two breeds being 0.64 ± 0.02 and 0.46 ± 0.0 kg/day in F×J and J bull calves, respectively. Crossbred steers had a significantly higher carcass of 206.5 ± 8.9 kg compared to 157.9 ± 8.6 kg for J steers. Results indicate the potential of improving beef production characteristics of the J cattle through crossbreeding. Melk opname is gedoen volgens standaard melkaantekening prosedures. Vet opbrengs was aansienlik hoër in F × J koeie as in J koeie (272 ± 4 246 teen ± 3 kg vet). Proteïen opbrengs was ook aansienlik hoër in F × J koeie as J koeie (201 ± 3 vs 194 ± 2 kg proteïen).

HAMPLOVÁ, Michaela January 2019 (has links)
In cattle breeding, it is necessary to pay great attention to calves, especially to the quality of their housing. Calf rearing is one of the riskiest parts of the whole breed. This requires a thorough development of biological, nutritional, ethological and technological factors of breeding. The aim of this thesis was to compare two different ways of housing calves (individually vs. pairs) in roofed outdoor individual boxes with feedeng twice a day and evaluate their influence on the course of growth and health from birth to weaning. The experiment was carried out at the Číčov farm, which i sone of the centers of Alimex a.s. Nezvěstice, farming in the district of Plzeň - South. The actual monitoring of the calves took place from 1. 1. 2018 to 31. 7. 2018. Both groups of calves included in the experiment were fed the same amount of feed (native milk, milk replacer, TMR). Each group had the same number of pieces - 12 calves (heifers) of the Holstein cattle breed. At the end of the reporting period, calves that were raised together in pairs at average weight of 227.17 kg during the dairy period, while calves reared individually during the same period reached a final weight of 215 kg. The average daily increase in calves with a common rearing was 0.89 kg, in calves of the second group this value was lower, namely 0.83 kg. However, tthe difference between the mean final weights of both groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). All calves included tn the exxperiment were fed with appropriate quality colostrum (immunoglobulin content of 100 g/l or more) within 2 hours of delivery. Immunity of all experimental calves was sufficient, so the level of immunoglobulins did not fall below 50 g/l, with more than 85 % of calves having an immunoglobulin content above 55 g/l. In calves reared individually during the experiment, diarrhea was noted in three animals and respiratory disease in four animals. In rearing together, there was diarrhea in five calves. Respiratory disease occured in four calves. In both experimental groups of calves, it was observed that immediately after drinking, the animals were mutually sucking mules, but the calves housed together with a lower frequency also licked the polypropylene plates separating the VIB and nibbled empty buckets.

Duarte, Jorge Carlos da Silva January 2010 (has links)
In world economic business it emerges the strategy as a key element in the consistence and in the process of deciding in companies of different economic sections. Researches about managing tools realized by Brain & COmpany (HSB, n.6, p.56) points that Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is among the twenty-five most popular contemporaneous company. Actually, BSC revolutionizes the business environment in the last years, once it aids the outcomes analysis besides the financial vision, that is, it also supports internal process, clients, learning and development. The agriculture and cattle breeding proprieties also need to be administrated in an effectively business way, establishing strategies which are interlinked with different systems. These interlinked strategies aid effectively to measure the results, organizing actions in order to increase production, productivity, and profitability. So, this thesis mentions a case study about the application of BSC in two Fundação Bradesco’s farms, whose location is in Miranda/MS and Formoso do Araguaia/TO. As outcomes of the challenging goals approved in the strategic BSC map of these farms, it was noticed that there was increasing of productivity in the cattle breeding section with a decreasing of mortality: 1,31% in the cattle for slaughter; 5,63% in the cattle for milk; 1,25% in the aviculture; 0,54% in the swine culture. Furthermore, there was a carcass increasing of killed animals in these farms: 6% in the cattle for slaughter; 2,56% in the chicken; 1,62% in swine. Besides, there was a decreasing of 6,33% in the cases of cattle mastitis in the analyzed period. By the outcomes analyses of this case study, it is possible to conclude that BSC is an efficient tool and it is possible to be implemented in agriculture and cattle breeding proprieties in the way that it provides an arrangement of the strategies together the operations, which results in improvement of the managing and productive processes in the analyzed farms. It is also possible to say that its way of implementation follows the principles approved by Kaplan and Norton, and it was not different of the way as it was already successfully adopted in industrial and service companies.
