Lietuvos archeologiniuose tyrimuose iki pastarojo laiko didžiausias dėmesys buvo skiriamas materialinei ir dvasinei kultūrai. Paskutiniaisiais metais pradėta daugiau domėtis socialiniais ir demografiniais procesais, kuriuos geriausiai atspindi laidojimo paminklų duomenys. Tokius tyrimus apsunkina medžiagos fragmentiškumas, todėl tyrinėjamos temos chronologinės bei teritorinės ribos yra plačios. / Until recently in Lithuanian archaeological researches the biggest attention was paid to the material and spiritual culture. In recent years, the interest is growing in social and demographic processes which are reflected by burial data. The researches are aggravated because of material fragmentation, consequently chronological and territorial margins of topic explored are wide. Not all cemeteries and data of them allow to draw conclusions.

The purposes of this creative project were (1) to develop a stone conservation plan for some of the markers in the "Old Part" of Beech Grove Cemetery, (2) to bring attention to the plight of a sampling of the cemetery stone markers in the "Old Part," and (3) to provide a written and photographic database for those individuals who are concerned with the preservation/conservation of Beech Grove Cemetery, in the hopes that a conservation plan can be implemented throughout the cemetery.Results revealed that a vast majority of Beech Grove's markers are deteriorating due to several natural factors such as weathering and erosion, as well as to neglect and vandalism. I have included, in this project, 195 stone inventory forms with a correlating map and photograph of those stones surveyed. The results also confirmed my theory that little conservation has taken place in the cemetery. Some conservation efforts that have been applied to the stone markers have further damaged them due to inappropriate methods. / Department of Architecture

The common conception that the cemetery holds the memory of all who died and were buried before us is a false one. There were certain biases in who was being commemorated, a form of selectivity to the memorial process, that caused a great number of people to erode from the landscape. The argument is based on observations from a sample of seventeen hundred individuals from the latter half of the nineteenth century in Montreal and surrounding villages. A selection of twelve surnames from archival data includes the three main cultures present in Montreal in the nineteenth century (French Canadians, Irish Catholics and English Protestants) and allows me to reconstitute families, to identify their kinship ties, and to determine their situation in life. Records from the cemeteries on Mount Royal and from the parishes of three rural villages confirm the burial of individuals from the sample. The presence or absence of these individuals in the cemetery landscapes depends on different commemorative practices influenced by religion, culture, gender, status and age.

A pesquisa intitulada História e Arte Funerária dos Cemitérios São José I e II em Porto Alegre (1888-2014) analisa as mudanças culturais no trato com a morte e com o sepultamento, bem como com o impacto dessas mudanças para a preservação da arte cemiterial. Apresentamos ao leitor um histórico dos principais cemitérios de Porto Alegre, com foco nos Cemitérios São José I e II, pertencentes à Comunidade de Alemães Católicos de São José. Desde 2000, os Cemitérios São José I e São José II sofrem a gradual subtração de seus monumentos funerários em virtude da construção de um estacionamento anexo a um crematório. O estudo aborda também a obra das marmorarias que construíram os túmulos dos Cemitérios São José I e II, em especial a Marmoraria Casa Aloys (1894-1961). Além do inventário tumular, realizamos um levantamento dos sepultados nos cemitérios de São José, encontrando ali diversos nomes importantes, ligados a atividades artísticas e culturais no Rio Grande do Sul, como os pintores Pedro Weingärtner e José Lutzenberger. Propomos, ainda, um roteiro para visita monitorada que apresente à sociedade estes e outros mortos ilustres sepultados nos Cemitérios São José I e II. / The research entitled History and Funerary Art of São José I and II Cemeteries in Porto Alegre (1888-2014) examines the cultural changes in dealing with death and burial, as well as the impact of these changes for the preservation of graveyard art. We present the reader with a history of the major cemeteries in Porto Alegre, focusing on Cemeteries São José I and II, owned by the Community of Catholic Germans of São José. Since 2000, Cemeteries São José I and II suffer the gradual subtraction of their funerary monuments due to construction of an annex parking at a crematorium. The study also addresses the work of marble yards which built the tombs of Cemeteries São José I and II, especially the marble yard Casa Aloys (1894-1961). Besides the tomb inventory, we conducted a survey of those buried in the Cemeteries São José, finding several important names linked to artistic and cultural activities in Rio Grande do Sul, such as painters Pedro Weingärtner and Jose Lutzenberger. We also propose an itinerary for a guided tour to present to the society these and other illustrious dead buried in Cemeteries São José I and II.

Os processos de metropolização e suas extensões na constituição das cidadesregiões globais são vivenciados nas grandes aglomerações urbano-industriais do capitalismo flexível e globalizado da atualidade. Estes processos atuam espacialmente em pelo menos dois sentidos: o primeiro, de ampliação das formas urbano-industriais das metrópoles, muitas vezes extrapolando suas delimitações formais; o segundo, de intensificação das transformações internas das mesmas, e da ressignificação de suas formas e conteúdos. Neste último, as antigas formas da cidade industrial presentes na metrópole consolidada despontam como cemitérios industriais. O estudo dos cemitérios industriais da metrópole de Porto Alegre, apresentado nesta tese, procura analisar a inclusão destas formas espaciais na sua complexidade atual. Partimos do resgate histórico da sua constituição como cidade industrial e seu posterior processo de metropolização, desconcentração e reconcentração que a caracterizam atualmente como uma metrópole de serviços. A seguir, trabalhamos as diferentes abordagens teóricas nos estudos dos cemitérios industriais. A antiga área industrial do Quarto Distrito de Porto Alegre é o estudo de caso apresentado, sendo que sua análise se dá a partir da inserção dos espaços industriais em três lógicas: lógica global, lógica regional e lógica local. Concluímos que os cemitérios industriais, espaços residuais da cidade industrial na metrópole, inserem-se de modo desigual nos diferentes circuitos da acumulação urbana. / The processes of metropolization and its extensions in the formation of global cityregions are experienced in large urban-industrial agglomerations of flexible and globalized capitalism of today. These processes act spatially in at least two directions: first, the expansion of urban-industrial forms of cities, often surpassing their formal boundaries; second, the intensification of internal transformations of the metropolis, and the redefinition of its forms and contents. In this last process, the old forms of the industrial city present in the current consolidated industrial metropolis emerge as "industrial cemeteries" (brownfields). The study of Porto Alegre metropolitan area’s industrial cemeteries, presented in this thesis, analyzes the inclusion of spatial forms in its current complexity. We start from the historic rescue of its formation as a industrial city and its subsequent metropolization, concentration and reconcentration processes, that currently characterizes it as a metropolis of services. Then, we work the different theoretical approaches in studies of industrial cemeteries. The old industrial area of Porto Alegre - Quarto Distrito neighborhood - is the case study on which we concentrate, and the analysis is performed through the integration of industrial space in three logics: global, regional and local logic. We conclude that industrial cemeteries, residual spaces of the industrial city in the metropolis, are unevenly inserted in the different circuits of urban accumulation. / Los procesos de metropolización y sus extensiones en la constitución de las ciudades-regiones globales están presentes en las grandes aglomeraciones urbanoindustriales del capitalismo flexible y globalizado de la actualidad. Estos procesos actúan espacialmente en por lo menos dos direcciones: primero, de ampliación de las formas urbano-industriales de las metrópolis, muchas veces sobrepasando sus limitaciones formales; el segundo, de intensificación de las transformaciones internas de las mismas, y de resignificación de sus formas y contenidos. En este último, las antiguas formas de la ciudad industrial presentes en la metrópolis consolidada progresan como "cementerios industriales". El estudio de los cementerios industriales de la metrópolis Porto Alegre, presentado en la tesis, busca analizar la inclusión de estas formas espaciales en su complexidad actual. Partimos del rescate histórico de su constitución como ciudad industrial y su posterior proceso de metropolización, desconcentración y reconcentración que caracterizan la metrópolis de servicios de hoy día.
