Palynology of the Lower Colorado Group (Late Lower Cretaceous)and its Lithological Equivalents in Central and West-Central Alberta, Canada

Brideaux, Wayne Wilfred 10 1900 (has links)
161 miospore species and 122 microplankton species are described from 106 samples in six sections of the Lower Colorado Group and its equivalents in central and west-central Alberta. Two miospore species, and two genera and twenty-five species of microplankton, are newly described. The miospore and microplankton assemblages are used as a basis for division of the Lower Colorado Group into several time-stratigraphic units. The age of the Group is determined as Upper Albian (latest Lower Cretaceous). A method for defining recurrent microplankton species groups is developed and applied to assemblages from two of the sections. The distribution of the recurrent groups formulated is shown to be correlated in part with palynological, lithological and other data. Application and extension of the results and conclusions of this investigation should prove useful in understanding many aspects of western Canadian Cretaceous stratigraphy and in the investigation of microplankton occurrence patterns from other deposits. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Fertilizantes minerais: análise da dinâmica na economia agrícola do Centro-Oeste brasileiro / Mineral fertilizers: analysis of the dynamics in the agricultural economy of Central-West Region of Brazil

Ogino, Cristiane Mitie 25 January 2018 (has links)
Mineral fertilizers are one of the contributor inputs to increase productivity in Brazil since the 1980s, given the limited expansion of the agricultural area, and are considered land-savers. However, because they are derived from scarce natural resources, viably extracted (economically and structurally) from limited locations of the world, and highly dependent on energy for synthesis, they make agricultural production sensitive to the impacts of supply and demand. As in 2008/2009, when the increase in fertilizer prices reduced its quantity of consumption, there were changes in the agricultural commodities market. The present dissertation aims to analyze the economic dynamics between mineral fertilizers and the agricultural market of the Central-West region, where the highest mineral fertilizer consumption is presented and the largest agricultural production in the country is concentrated. For the analysis, we considered some variables, such as the quantity of fertilizers consumed, and the purchasing power weighted by productivity, as well as the price of the specific fertilizer. The time series methodology, more specifically the Autoregressive Structural Vector Model (SVAR), was used for each primary macronutrient, that is, the nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilizers. This model allowed us to estimate the responses of the endogenous variables to the positive impacts of the other variables as well as of themselves. The results found the quantity consumed as being the most endogenous variable, with the greater participation of weighted purchasing power than its prices, besides its own variation for the three models. Differently from the prices that presented more exogenous, whose own contribution was more than 90% also for the three models. Therefore, in the analysis of the impacts, it was determined the greater sensitivity of variation between the amount of fertilizer consumed on the shock in purchasing power for three models. When compared, they obtained the decreasing order of elasticities equal to 0.65; 0.58; and 0,48, respectively, to N> P205 > K2O fertilizers, a sequence that is conferred by the agronomic performance of the nutrients in the soil of the region and in the crops. On the other hand, the lower sensitivity of variation occurred between purchasing power over the shock of fertilizer prices, a result expected, because fertilizers are one of the inputs needed to increase productivity. Thus, the positive relation between the three types of mineral fertilizers and the production in the Central-West by the demands of the fertilizers are inelastic to the variation of the fertilizer prices.

Epidemiological surveys and molecular analysis of rotavirus strains are required for gastroenteritis control and prevention. Studies using VP6, an important immunogenic structural protein, and NSP4, a transmembrane nonstructural glycoprotein which is critical to rotavirus morphogenesis and pathogenesis, have been performed. In this study, 330 rotavirus-positive fecal samples previously obtained from children with or without diarrhea, between 1987 and 2003, in three cities of Central West Region of Brazil (Goiânia, Brasília and Campo Grande), were characterized for VP6- and NSP4-encoding genes. The VP6 and NSP4 genes were amplified by reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Detection rates of 84.8% and 78.5% were observed for VP6 and NSP4 genes, respectively. Two distinct genotypes could be recognized for NSP4 (A and B). It was observed that the G9P[6] samples were associated with genotype A, whereas the G1P[6], G1P[8], G2P[8], G3P[8], G4P[8] and G9P[8] samples were associated with genotype B. The analysis of VP6 gene allowed genogrouping of samples in two clusters, genogroups I and II. The G2P[4], G3P[4] and G9P[6] samples were identified as genogroup I, whereas the G1P[6], G1P[8], G2P[8], G4P[6], G4P[8] and G9P[8] samples were identified as genogroup II. In addition, it was showed that samples identified as VP6 genogroup I were associated with NSP4 genotype A and samples identified as VP6 genogroup II were associated with NSP4 genotype B. This investigation described different genetic groups representing diversity of group A rotavirus samples circulating in the Central West Region of Brazil.

Twenty-four miles around Nelungaloo : the history and importance of cinema exhibition in pre-television times to a country area of central-western New South Wales

Cork, Kevin James, University of Western Sydney, Nepean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences January 1994 (has links)
Little research into historical, architectural and social significance of the picture theatre in pre-television rural Australian society has been undertaken. Taking a New South Wales country area (to represent a microcosm), this thesis records the picture venues and qualitative research material from past patrons and theatre staff. The study 1/. establishes the environment created by a picture theatre 2/. shows that New South Wales was typical of Australia in film attendance before the 1960s 3/. introduces the Central-West subject area, and describes how data was gathered from available records 4/. shows the development of the picture venues within the subject areas 5/. gives 'life' to the occasion formerly associated with going to the pictures 6/. suggests the success ot the rural picture shows was a happy co-incidence: the exhibitors' desire to make money and the patrons' desire for a social experience (and entertainment). A recommendation is made that one of the venues discovered during the course of research should be investigated for heritage listing. It is important that we should acknowledge the vital part that going to the pictures once played in pre-television days, especially in rural areas / Master of Arts (Hons)

: filiations et interactions entre groupes culturels / Ceramic traditions in the Late and Final Neolithic in Central-West France (3700-2200 BC) : affiliations and interactions between cultural groups

Ard, Vincent 24 October 2011 (has links)
Two millennia after the arrival of the first Neolithic settlers, a “mosaic” of cultural groups appeared in Central-West France in the Late Neolithic period, c. 3700 BC. Except for the famous Peu-Richard culture of Saintonge, known for its ceramic decorations which are sometimes exuberant, all the groups of this cultural mosaic produce coarse and sparsely decorated ceramics, which are now difficult to distinguish just on morpho-stylistic criteria. However, these morphological criteria are commonly used for the definition of the Neolithic cultures. The origin and precise characterization of these Late Neolithic groups, and also their affiliation with the Artenac culture of the Final Neolithic period, are commonly discussed. To clarify this chrono-cultural context and understand the affiliations and interactions between groups of the Late and Final Neolithic (c. 3700-2200 BC), our study analyzes all the “chaine opératoire” of pottery manufacture from twenty-three ceramic assemblages from domestic (causewayed enclosures) and funeral sites which are distributed throughout the Central-West France, between Loire and Dordogne rivers. The aim of this work is to highlight the “ways of doing” transmitted in potters groups, as shown by multiple ethnoarchaeological studies. Eight ceramic traditions, characterized by the shaping methods, the clay material and finally the forms produced, are all successively presented and the most characteristic features of each ones are illustrated by macro-photos.Therefore, the chronological and spatial distributions of these ceramic traditions are discussed in order to test the validity of the current chrono-cultural context. Three cultural areas are identified in the second half of the Late Neolithic (Seuil du Poitou, Taizé and Peu-Richard) which offer the possibility to discuss their respective origins and the interactions between these areas. The emergence of a dominant culture (Peu-Richard) is observed and his power is perhaps related to the control of the salt exploitation in the poitevin and Rochefort marshes. The Peu-Richard ceramic productions, sometimes found at long-distance, are the ancestors of those of the Artenac culture whose area of influence extends beyond the Central-West borders in the Late Neolithic (c. 2900-2200 BC).

The evolution of brazilian cooperativism occurred at different scales, being pertinent at the agricultural modernization process and mainly by public policies, such as the creation of the Real Plan, which led cooperatives to new guidelines, given the lack of support from the federal government in the 1990s. Therefore, this discusses the agro-industrial cooperative expansion and formation in the central-west region of Paraná State, with emphasis on the two major agro-industrial cooperatives on site, Coamo Agro-industrial Cooperativa and the suppressed Cooperativa Agroindustrial de Goioerê - Coagel. In this sense, the search aimed to analyze the factors that led Coamo to become the largest single cooperative in Latin America, and Coagel to be merged into this, also trying to understand this whole process from the local, with its specificities. The hypothesis of the research is that among the factors that conditioned Coamo performance, was its vertical integration process, along with its territorial expansion, which has already reached three brazilian states (PR / SC / MS). Still, Coagel entered into crisis after the decline of cotton in 1996, which was the flagship of the cooperative, initially causing its lease, then its merger into Coamo. In short, it is considered that this study highlights the different paths and strategic profiles embraced for the hegemony of Coamo, both in the field as in the city, such as the difficulties encountered by Coagel in the course of its history.
