The red syenite of the Pilansberg complex as a nepheline source for the South African ceramics and glass industry

Pantshi, Bukiwe 23 March 2007 (has links)
A viability study was undertaken on a farm Zandrivierspoort 210 JP, in the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex to investigate the red syenite deposit. The red syenite deposit of interest is located in the south-western quadrant of the Pilanesberg. It is a potential source of nepheline, which is used as a flux in glass and ceramics industry. The study was aimed at establishing the demand for the material in South Africa and the market logistics related to its exploitation. Glass and ceramics manufacturers have different specifications as far as the quality and the product form is concerned. A market study conducted indicated that glass manufacturers require already beneficiated material with a low Fe content, depending on the kind of glass being manufactured. Ceramics manufactures also want material with low Fe content, but the material can be unbeneficiated as most of these factories already have facilities to remove Fe and other gangue. The common requirement is that material must be crushed and milled to a specific size. Red Syenite complies with the specifications of the ceramics manufacturer and did not comply directly with the specification of the glass manufacturer. The main reason for not non-compliance with glass specifications can be attributed to the fact that the material supplied was unbeneficiated. A major concern from the industry is the continuity of production from the deposit and an assurance of constant quality. It was also established that the availability of substitutes such as feldspar at a lower cost than nepheline results in an unwillingness of potential users to source nepheline despite its advantages. It is recommended that extensive geological studies be undertaken to confirm the resources and reserves of the entire nepheline-bearing deposits in the Pilanesberg. The mining of the deposit will be undertaken by employing a quarrying method, which will be followed by opencast to a depth of 50m. The Run-Of-Mine (ROM) will be crushed and milled to sizes specified by clients and the beneficiation process will follow. A financial investigation based on the known facts about the deposit established that capital, production rate, and selling price have the highest influence on the viability of the project. Transport and operating costs in this case showed a less significant influence on the viability of the project. / Dissertation (MSc (ESPM))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Geology / unrestricted

Produção de BI4TI3O12 via rota sol-gel modificada

Ferreira, Rudson da Conceição 01 March 2013 (has links)
The main goal of this study was to develop a methodology for the production of Bismuth Titanate ceramics in the phase Bi4Ti3O12, based on sol-gel route and using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as polymerizing agent. Bi4Ti3O12 is a ferroelectric material with great technological appeal due to its potential application in capacitors and memory devices. Moreover, the sol-gel route with PVA, besides enabling particle size control and low contamination during the synthesis, has the advantage of using less expensive reagents than those used in conventional route. The results indicated that ceramic bodies with single phase and relative density of 70% can be obtained after calcination at 800º C and sintering at 1000º C for 2h. These ceramic bodies had microstructure with sub-micrometric rounded grains that assume platelet morphology when reach micrometric dimensions. The impedance diagram of sintered ceramics presented two characteristic semicircles, thermally activated conductivity and dielectric permittivity characterized by a dispersion at low frequencies due to charge carriers movement in the material. The activation energy for the conductive processes was determined by the low frequency dependence of electric conductivity and modulus on the temperature. In both cases, it was observed an Arrhenius-type behavior with energies around 0.7 eV. Similar values were obtained for the conductive processes in intra-grain region, at high frequencies. In this case, the energies were obtained only by analyzing the electrical module. The results obtained point out to the success of the technique to obtain material with good crystallographic quality through a route that is simplified and cost reduced. In the specific case of the material being studied in this work, additional efforts will be required to achieve ceramics with relative density higher than 90%.

Jesus, Jonas Almeida de 06 September 2013 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the spatial distribution of red ceramic industrial activity in the local towns of Areia Branca, Campo do Brito and Itabaiana (Sergipe), focusing on labor relations, the role of the State and the sustainability discourse that feeds the development proposals. The expansion of the housing and the civil construction market has driven the establishment of new potteries that demand the hiring of labor, subjected to high workload and low wages. The answers given by the State, as a way of inhibit the exploitation of plant and mineral resources for the ceramic production, based in a sustainability discourse, reveal its class character, to the extent that its performance toward the environmental crimes is weak and favors the ceramic production to meet the civil construction market demands. In order to develop this study, the research was based on an analysis of the reality from the standpoint of historical and dialectical materialism that led the analytical procedures, such as the theoretical basis and the field research, to compare the interpretations of the interviewees and establish a relation between theory and empiricism. Therefore, it is recognized that the elements involved in this activity are fundamental to give their responses to the current situation of structural crisis of capitalism. From a critical analysis it was possible to reveal the contradictions that pervade those who are involved in the ceramic production as well introduced into the conflict between capital versus work and nature, enabling an understanding of reality as a product of multiple determinations.

The people making ceramics were considered as "artisans" (gongjiang) in traditional China. Classifying ceramics as an "art" (meishu) and potters as "artists", was a new development in the twentieth century. This thesis examines this process by comparing the experience of artisans from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, in which the imperial kilns (yuyao) were located, and from Shiwan, Guangdong province, where only civilian kilns (minyao) were found. / This thesis argues their different historical background led to the differences in their different experience. The reputation of Jingdezhen's world famous "imperial kilns" lasted into the twentieth century, and so, as Jingdezhen was subject to industrial development and technological upgrading, Jingdezhen's craftsmen came from the new technical schools which were founded to revive the ceramic industry. In Shiwan, by contrast, apprenticeship to reputable craftsmen continued to serve as artistic credential, and was made use of by patrons, commentators and publicists in promoting Shiwan's artistic tradition. / Adviser: David Faure. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 178-192) / Electronic reproduction.
