Agregado leve de argila calcinada para uso em concreto estrutural: viabilidade de cerâmica vermelha do Estado de São Paulo / Calcined clay lightweight aggregate for use in structural concrete: viability of the red ceramic from the state of São Paulo

Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo da viabilidade da utilização de cerâmica vermelha para a confecção de agregados leves de argila calcinada para utilização em concretos estruturais. Inicialmente, foram coletadas amostras de solo de cinco diferentes empresas produtoras de cerâmica vermelha do estado de São Paulo. As massas cerâmicas foram caracterizadas por meio das técnicas de limites de liquidez (LL) e plasticidade (LP), análise granulométrica, análise química e difração de raios X (DRX). Os corpos de prova confeccionados com essas massas cerâmicas, queimados à temperatura de 900ºC, foram caracterizados por meio da avaliação da retração linear, absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente, expansão por umidade e resistência à compressão. Após a caracterização dos corpos de prova de cerâmica vermelha, foram escolhidas duas amostras para a confecção dos agregados leves de argila calcinada. Em seguida, foram confeccionados corpos de prova de concreto com agregados leves de argila calcinada, argila expandida e brita. Os corpos de prova de concreto leve foram caracterizados pelos ensaios de slump, massa específica fresca, teor de ar incorporado, resistência à compressão, resistência à tração, módulo de deformação, retração por secagem, absorção de água, índice de vazios e massa específica aparente. Os resultados desta pesquisa indicaram a viabilidade da produção de agregados leves de argila calcinada para utilização em concretos e os valores da massa específica (1.555 a 1.785 kg/m³) e da resistência à compressão (18,0 a 55,8 MPa) apresentaram-se em um patamar intermediário entre os valores observados para concretos com argila expandida e com basalto. / This paper aims the study the viability of using red ceramic to make calcined clay lightweight aggregates in order to use in structural concrete. At first, soil sample were collected from five different red ceramic producing companies from São Paulo State. Liquid and plastic techniques, particle size analysis, chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize ceramic masses. The specimens made from these ceramic masses, burned at the temperature of 900ºC, were characterized by evaluating of linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent porosity, specific mass, moisture expansion and compressive strength. After the red ceramic specimens characterization, two samples were chosen for the manufacture of calcined clay lightweight aggregates. After that, concrete specimens with calcined clay lightweight aggregate, expanded clay and basalt were made. These concrete specimens were characterized by slump test, fresh specific mass, incorporated air content, compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, water absorption, voids and bulk density. Results of this research indicated the viability of production of calcined clay lightweight aggregate for concrete utilization and the specific mass values (1.555 and 1.785 Kg/m³) and the compressive strength values (18,0 to 55,8 MPa) presented at a intermediated level between those observed for the expanded clay and basalt.

Translucency and degree of conversion of resin cement with different thickness of full contour zirconia

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Background: Traditionally, zirconia has been used as a core material for allceramic crowns that are later covered by a more esthetic veneering layer. Recently, new zirconia materials with higher translucency commonly referred to as the “full contour zirconia” have been introduced with the aim to allow dentist to fabricate entire allceramic crown from the material with acceptable esthetic and mechanical functions without the need for veneering. However, there is little information in the literature regarding the translucency of full contour zirconia and the degree of conversion of resin cement underneath the full contour zirconia. Objectives: 1) To investigate the translucency parameter (TP) of recently marketed full contour zirconia and compare that to traditional zirconia and lithium disilicate glass ceramic (LDGC) at different thicknesses. 2) To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC) of the resin cement through different thicknesses of the full contour zirconia, traditional zirconia and LDGC. Alternative hypothesis: The new generation zirconia at the clinically recommended thickness has lower translucency than that of LDGC and higher than that of non-veneered traditional zirconia. In addition, DC of resin cement under full contour zirconia is lower than that of LDGC and higher than that of traditional zirconia. Methods: 150 ceramic specimens (12 x12 mm with thickness of 1-2 mm for LDGC and Zirconia) were divided into 6 groups according to the type of material, as follow: LDGC (IPS e-max CAD), Traditional Zirconia (CAP QZ), full contour zirconia (CAP FZ, Zirlux, Bruxzir, KDZ Bruxer). The TP for materials at various thicknesses were measured by a spectrophotometer (CM-2600D). The DC of the light curing resin cement (Variolink II) underneath the ceramic disks was measured by FTIR. Result: All full contour zirconia has lower translucency parameter and light transmission than LDGC. The translucency parameter decreases with increasing thickness of any type of ceramic. There were no significant differences in the degree of conversion of resin cement among the type of ceramic disc, except Bruxzir. The correlation of TP between various thicknesses and the types of ceramic materials was established by a regression analysis.

O PAE é originado no processo de produção de aço e classificado como um Resíduo Classe I perigoso (ABNT, 2004a). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade técnica e ambiental do material cerâmico produzido a partir da adição de PAE em argila vermelha. A etapa metodológica da pesquisa contemplou a amostragem das matérias-primas e sua caracterização química, física, mineralógica e térmica. Além disso, a formulação e moldagem da massa cerâmica com 0, 10, 20 e 30% de PAE e a sinterização e coleta das emissões atmosféricas de processo a 750, 850 e 950°C. Por fim, foram realizados ensaios de caracterização técnica e ambiental no material obtido. Dentre os resultados encontrados, verificou-se que a argila possui como principais elementos Si, Al e K, enquanto que para o PAE os principais são Fe e Zn. Além disso, a argila possui um tamanho de partícula superior ao do PAE, que por sua vez possui partículas de formato em geral esférico e que tendem a se aglomerar. A partir do tratamento térmico das massas cerâmicas formuladas, observou-se que a adição de 10 e 20% de PAE nas temperaturas de 850 e 950°C produz material indicado para fabricação de tijolos em termos de resistência à flexão e absorção de água. Em termos ambientais, pode-se concluir que adições de até 20% de PAE a 750°C produzem materiais classificados em função do teor de Al como Classe IIA não inerte, conforme a NBR 10006 (ABNT, 2004d). Quanto às emissões atmosféricas, com exceção do teor de 30% de PAE produzido a 850°C, as demais combinações testadas estão de acordo com as normas de referência, não havendo legislação específica para esta atividade. Considerando uma visão global dos resultados obtidos, indica-se o uso de até 10% de PAE para fabricação de tijolos a partir de 850°C, prevendo-se assim sua conformidade com as normas técnicas de produtos de cerâmica vermelha. / Scientific and technological researches have been indicated the possibility of recycling several kinds of waste in construction, among which it stands out the electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). The EAFD is originated in the steelmaking process and classified as a hazardous waste (ABNT, 2004a). The aim of this research was to evaluate the technical and environmental viability of ceramic material produced from EAFD addition in red clay. The methodological stage included sampling of raw materials, its chemical, physical, mineralogical and thermal characterization. Also, the formulation and molding of compositions with 0, 10, 20 and 30% of EAFD and the sampling of atmospheric emissions from sintering at 750, 850 e 950°C. Finally, it was realized technical and environmental tests in the obtained material. Among the results, it was verified that the red clay has in its chemical composition, Al, Si and K as majoritarian elements, while EAFD has, mainly, Fe and Zn. Besides that, the red clay has larger particle than EAFD’s, which in turn has spherical particles which tends to form agglomerates. As result of the thermal treatment, it was observed that the addition of 10 and 20% of EAFD and sintering at 850 and 950°C produces a material indicated to bricks in function of its flexural strength and water absorption. In environment terms, it can be concluded that additions up to 20% of EAFD processing at 750°C produce a material classified as not inert, according NBR 10006 (ABNT, 2004d) due to its Al content. Regarding atmospheric emissions, excluded the addition of 30% of EAFD sintering at 850°C, all conditions are according to the reference norms, even though there is no specific standard to this activity. In a global perspective, it is indicated the use of EAFD up to 10% to bricks sintering above 850°C, predicting its accordance to red ceramic specifications.

Atualmente, na região da fronteira oeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, existem várias usinas termoelétricas de biomassa para geração de energia elétrica através da queima da casca de arroz. Essa tecnologia vem ao encontro da necessidade de diversificação da matriz energética no país. A indústria orizícola produz no Brasil aproximadamente 12 milhões de toneladas por ano de arroz, e aproximadamente 2,5 milhões de toneladas por ano são convertidos em casca. Caso toda esta casca fosse queimada, gerar-se-iam aproximadamente 500 mil toneladas de cinza, a qual é rica em sílica. Portanto, viabilizar seu aproveitamento tende a reduzir o passivo ambiental, além dos benefícios econômicos. No presente trabalho foi analisado o efeito da substituição parcial da argila refratária por sílica da casca de arroz (SCA) nas propriedades mecânicas e termomecânicas dos materiais cerâmicos refratários produzidos, em percentuais de 5, 10 e 20%. Foram analisadas as propriedades mecânicas desses materiais através de ensaios de resistência à compressão, tração direta, flexão em três pontos e dureza superficial Vickers. Analisaram-se também a retração linear, absorção de água, porosidade aparente e resistência ao choque térmico. Conforme se aumentou a substituição parcial de argila refratária por SCA, foi obtido um melhor empacotamento da mistura granular e, consequentemente, ocorreu uma melhora nas propriedades mecânicas das amostras. Por outro lado, o material apresentou-se mais frágil, com menor resistência ao choque térmico. Não foi encontrada variação na retração linear após a queima, já a absorção de água e porosidade aparente diminuíram conforme se aumentou a substituição da argila pela SCA. A microestrutura do material foi analisada através de análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e difração de raios-x, onde se identificaram as fases cristalinas na mineralogia do material resultante. Na análise da mineralogia do material observou-se um aumento de pico de cristobalita conforme se aumentou o teor de SCA na mistura, em função da cristalização da sílica livre. Um menor volume de porosidade foi encontrado conforme se aumentou o teor de substituição de argila pela SCA. / With the intention of adding value to rice husk ash, a byproduct of paddy industry, and contribute to sustainable development of the country, this research sought to develop refractory ceramic materials with refractory partial replacement of clay by silica from rice husk (SCA) produced from electricity generation. Currently on the western border of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, there are several biomass power plants for generating electricity by burning rice husk. This technology comes against the need for diversification of energy sources in the country. The paddy industry in Brazil produces approximately 12 million tons of rice per year, of which approximately 2.5 million tons per year are converted into shell. If all this bark was burned, it would generate approximately 500 tons of ash, which is rich in silica. Thus enabling its use tends to reduce the environmental liability beyond economic benefits. In the present work, the effect of partial replacement of silica refractory clay for rice husk (SCA) on the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of refractory ceramic materials was analyzed for percentages of 5, 10 and 20%. The mechanical properties of these materials were analyzed by testing compressive strength, direct-drive, three point bending and superficial hardness. We also analyzed the linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent porosity and resistance to thermal shock. As increased the partial replacement of refractory clay for SCA in the mixture was obtained a better packing of the granular mixture and, consequently, better results in mechanical properties were found. On the other hand, the material appeared more brittle, with a lower thermal shock resistance. Was not found in the linear shrinkage after firing, the water absorption and apparent porosity decreased as the clay was increased by replacement SCA. The microstructure of the material was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (MEV) and x-ray diffraction where the crystalline phases identified in the mineralogy of the resulting material. The analysis of the mineralogy of the material was observed an increase of cristobalite peak was increased as the content of SCA, depending on the crystallization of the free silica. A smaller volume of porosity is found according to the increased content of clay replacement SCA.

Dvojstupňové slinování pokročilých keramických materiálů s různými krystalovými strukturami / Two-step sintering of advanced ceramic materials with various crystal structures

The influence of Two-Step Sintering (TSS) process on the final microstructure of oxide ceramics materials with two different crystal structures was studied. Tetragonal zirconia (stabilized with 3mol%Y2O3, particle size 90nm and 140nm ) and cubic zirconia (8mol%Y2O3, 70nm) powders were cold isostatically pressed and pressure less sintered with different heating schedules. The microstructures achieved with TSS method were compared with microstructures achieved with conventional Single-Step Sintering schedule (SSS). The results showed that the efficiency of the TSS of these oxide ceramics was more dependent on their crystal structure than on their particle size and green body microstructure. The method of TSS brought only negligible improvement of the microstructure of tetragonal zirconia ceramics. On the other hand, TSS was successful in the sintering of cubic zirconia ceramics; it led to a decrease in grain size by a factor of 2.

Crystallization and Lithium Ion Diffusion Mechanism in the Lithium-Aluminum-Germanium-Phosphate Glass-Ceramic Solid Electrolytes

NASCION-type lithium-aluminum-germanium-phosphate (LAGP) glass-ceramic is one of the most promising solid electrolyte (SEs) material for the next generation Li-ion battery. Based on the crystallization of glass-ceramic material, the two-step heat treatment was designed to control the crystallization of Li-ion conducting crystal in the glass matrix. The results show that the LAGP crystal is preferred to internally crystalize, Tg + 60%∆T is the nucleation temperature that provides the highest ion conductivity. The compositional investigation also found that, pure LAGP crystal phase can be synthesized by lowering the amount of GeO2. To fill gap of atomic structure in LAGP glass-ceramic, molecular dynamic (MD) simulation was used to build the crystal, glass, and interfacial structure LAGP. The aliovalent ion substitution induced an simultaneously redistribution of Li to the 36f interstitial site, and the rapid cooperative motion between the Li-ions at 36f can drop the activation energy of LAGP crystal by decreasing the relaxation energy; furthermore, an energy model was built based on the time-based analysis of Li-ion diffusion to articulate the behavior. The glass and interfacial structure show and accumulation of AlO4, GeO4 and Li at the interface, which explains the Li-trapping on the intergranular glass phase. An in-situ synchrotron X-ray study found that, by using two-step heat treatment, the nucleation of Li-ion conducting crystal in the glass-matrix induced large strain from interfacial tension, which can also promote the incorporation of aliovalent ion substitution in the NASICON crystal and enhances the ion conductivity.

O presente trabalho tem o intuito de identificar e compreender as cadeias operatórias dos vestígios, cerâmicos e líticos, coletados nas escavações realizadas nos sítios Inhazinha e Rodrigues Furtado, localizados no município de Perdizes, região do Triângulo Mineiro, oeste do Estado de Minas Gerais, para se inferir sobre a manutenção de uma continuidade cultural, ou a ocorrência de mudança. Ambos os sítios são integrantes do Projeto Quebra Anzol, sendo que o sítio Inhazinha foi escavado na campanha de julho/agosto do ano de 1988, e apresenta datação de 1095±186 anos AP (TL FATEC/SP). O sítio Rodrigues Furtado: escavado em julho/agosto de 1992 e em julho de 2006, e apresenta datação de 500±50 anos AP (TL-FATEC/SP). A análise foi direcionada pela identificação das cadeias operatórias dos vestígios líticos e cerâmicos dos dois sítios, e dessa forma, compreender os processos tecnológicos da manufatura desses vestígios, do processo de procura, captação e transporte da matéria-prima ao descarte, que resultou no processo de formação do registro arqueológico. Para tal todas as etapas técnicas da manufatura desses materiais foram minuciosamente analisadas e comparadas de forma que possamos empreender um estudo sistemático capaz de clarificar os propósitos das sociedades pré-históricas. Este estudo tem o propósito de colaborar para a compreensão da ocupação pré-histórica do vale do alto Paranaíba, uma das regiões alvo do projeto Quebra-Anzol. / This present work\'s goal consists on the identification and comprehension of the operational chains of the vestiges, both ceramic and lithic, collected throughout the excavations conducted at the Inhazinha and Rodrigues Furtado archaeological sites in order to build inferences regarding the maintenance of a cultural continuity or the change occurrance. The sites are located at the municipal district of Perdizes, within the Triângulo Mineiro region, west from the Minas Gerais State and both figure as part of the Quebra-Anzol Project. The Inhazinha site\'s excavation was held throughout the July/August campaign during the year of 1988 and its dating is stated upon 1095±186 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The Rodrigues Furtado site\'s excavation period consisted on July/August of 1992 and also July 2006; and the site\'s dating is set upon 500±50 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The analysis is conducted by the identification of the lithic and ceramic vestiges\' operational chains from both sites. Furthermore, it is our intent to, in this manner, comprehend the technological processes of these vestiges\' manufacture along with its search process, gathering, transportation and, last, discard of raw material - resulting on the formation process of the archaeological register. Therefore, all technical stages of these materials\' manufacture are to be scrupulously analysed and compared in a way to enable a systematic study able to clarify the purposes of the pre-hystorical societies. This study\'s purpose lies upon the collaboration for the comprehension of the Vale do Alto Paranaíba pre-hystorical occupation, which consists as one of the target areas of the \"Quebra-Anzol\" Project.

After the physical chemical characterization of the primary materials, standard clay and the chamotte, three mixtures were prepared with concentrations of 10, 20 and 30% chamotte by weight in relation to the standard clay. The test samples underwent heating at a rate of 30 0C/min to levels that included 100o , 200o , 300o, 400o, 500o e 600 0C and also we submitted to three distinct burn temperatures: 1450o, 1500o e 1550 0C, remaining at these temperatures for 2 hour periods. After sintering, the physical and microstructural properties of the different test samples were measured and analyzed. O presente trabalho tem o intuito de identificar e compreender as cadeias operatórias dos vestígios, cerâmicos e líticos, coletados nas escavações realizadas nos sítios Inhazinha e Rodrigues Furtado, localizados no município de Perdizes, região do Triângulo Mineiro, oeste do Estado de Minas Gerais, para se inferir sobre a manutenção de uma continuidade cultural, ou a ocorrência de mudança. Ambos os sítios são integrantes do Projeto Quebra Anzol, sendo que o sítio Inhazinha foi escavado na campanha de julho/agosto do ano de 1988, e apresenta datação de 1095±186 anos AP (TL FATEC/SP). O sítio Rodrigues Furtado: escavado em julho/agosto de 1992 e em julho de 2006, e apresenta datação de 500±50 anos AP (TL-FATEC/SP). A análise foi direcionada pela identificação das cadeias operatórias dos vestígios líticos e cerâmicos dos dois sítios, e dessa forma, compreender os processos tecnológicos da manufatura desses vestígios, do processo de procura, captação e transporte da matéria-prima ao descarte, que resultou no processo de formação do registro arqueológico. Para tal todas as etapas técnicas da manufatura desses materiais foram minuciosamente analisadas e comparadas de forma que possamos empreender um estudo sistemático capaz de clarificar os propósitos das sociedades pré-históricas. Este estudo tem o propósito de colaborar para a compreensão da ocupação pré-histórica do vale do alto Paranaíba, uma das regiões alvo do projeto Quebra-Anzol. / This present work\'s goal consists on the identification and comprehension of the operational chains of the vestiges, both ceramic and lithic, collected throughout the excavations conducted at the Inhazinha and Rodrigues Furtado archaeological sites in order to build inferences regarding the maintenance of a cultural continuity or the change occurrance. The sites are located at the municipal district of Perdizes, within the Triângulo Mineiro region, west from the Minas Gerais State and both figure as part of the Quebra-Anzol Project. The Inhazinha site\'s excavation was held throughout the July/August campaign during the year of 1988 and its dating is stated upon 1095±186 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The Rodrigues Furtado site\'s excavation period consisted on July/August of 1992 and also July 2006; and the site\'s dating is set upon 500±50 years BP (TL FATEC/SP). The analysis is conducted by the identification of the lithic and ceramic vestiges\' operational chains from both sites. Furthermore, it is our intent to, in this manner, comprehend the technological processes of these vestiges\' manufacture along with its search process, gathering, transportation and, last, discard of raw material - resulting on the formation process of the archaeological register. Therefore, all technical stages of these materials\' manufacture are to be scrupulously analysed and compared in a way to enable a systematic study able to clarify the purposes of the pre-hystorical societies. This study\'s purpose lies upon the collaboration for the comprehension of the Vale do Alto Paranaíba pre-hystorical occupation, which consists as one of the target areas of the \"Quebra-Anzol\" Project.
