This doctoral thesis presents contributions to the stability analysis, control and signal processing in the context of nonlinear dynamical systems. With regard to the stability analysis, this work presents a new method to calculate the Lyapunov spectrum of solutions for dynamical systems based on copies ("clones") of the state equations with small perturbations in the initial conditions. The proposal has the following key features: it does not require linearization of the motion equations; it allows the partial estimation of the Lyapunov spectrum; it allows the spectrum estimation for non-smooth dynamical systems. Moreover, this calculation procedure is used to construct a strategy of control of dynamical systems based on the selection of parameters that lead to a particular desired Lyapunov spectrum, which is tested for the neuronal model proposed by Hodgkin and Huxley. As a contribution in the context of signal processing, this work presents a new methodology for blind source separation of chaotic signals mixed with stochastic sources based on recurrence quantification analysis, as well as a new technique for shadowing and filtering chaotic signals when the structure of the state equations is available / Doutorado / Automação / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

A 3D discontinuous vector field on a smooth surface of codimension one, can be generically tangent to both sides of the surface at a point p. The points where this phenomenon occurs are called two-fold singularities. In this project, we study the local dynamics of a three-dimensional piecewise smooth dynamical systems at a two-fold. We have seen that the local dynamics depends mainly on a single parameter that controls a bifurcation. Specifically in the case where the folds are both invisibles, the so-called singularity Teixeira, we find that the system can admit a flow exhibiting chaotic but non-deterministic dynamics / Mestrado / Matematica / Mestre em Matemática

An investigation into how marketers cope with an environment of high complexity and turbulence, with special reference to the South African environment

Mason, Roger Bruce January 2004 (has links)
This study investigated relationships between marketing success, the level of external environmental complexity and turbulence, and marketing mix tactics. The literature suggested that more successful companies in simple and stable environments use stabilising marketing tactics, while more successful companies in complex and turbulent environments use destabilising tactics, regardless of industry habits, management preferences or market sector. A marketing mix model for the different environments was developed using a chaos and complexity theory perspective. The study was exploratory, using a qualitative, case study technique. Data was collected via depth interviews and document analysis from four companies in the information technology (IT) and packaging industries. These industries were identified as, respectively, the most complex and turbulent, and the simplest and most stable, South African environments. Two companies from each industry were chosen to reflect more successful and less successful companies. The more successful company in the complex/turbulent environment was found to use destabilising tactics, as did the more successful company in the simple/stable environment. Therefore, contrary to expectations, it appears that destabilising tactics contribute more to success than stabilising tactics do, regardless of the environment. It was also found, contrary to expectations, that stabilising tactics were used by both the less successful companies. The research concluded that destabilising tactics are related to more success and stabilising tactics to less success. The lack of clear differentiation between the two industries may be because the whole South African environment is complex and turbulent, because the packaging industry is not sufficiently simple and stable to differentiate it from the IT industry or because packaging industry managers perceive their industry to be complex and turbulent and act accordingly. Despite these uncertainties, the research showed the marketing mix model to be reasonably accurate for the complex/turbulent environment, and therefore of potential value to South African companies. To overcome the equivocal findings, further research is recommended in different industries, in countries with different levels of complexity and turbulence and into specific marketing mix tactics. Research into managers’ perceptions of environmental complexity and turbulence and into co-evolution of marketing tactics and external environments would also be of value.

CFD analysis/optimization of thermo-acoustic instabilities in liquid fuelled aero stationary gas turbine combustors

Lei, Shenghui January 2010 (has links)
It has been recognized that the evaporation process is one of the pivotal mechanisms driving thermo-acoustic instability in gas turbines and rockets in particular. In this regard, this study is principally focused on studying the evaporation process relevant to thermo-acoustic instability from three complementary viewpoints in an effort to contribute to an overall instability model driven primarily by evaporation in gas turbine combustors. Firstly, a state of the art LES algorithm is employed to validate an evaporation model to be employed in predictive modelling regarding combustion instabilities. Good agreement between the numerical predictions and experimental data is achieved. Additionally, transient sub-critical droplet evaporation is investigated numerically. In particular, a numerical method is proposed to capture the extremely important pressure-velocity-density coupling. Furthermore, the dynamic system nonlinear behaviour encountered in classical thermo-acoustic instability is investigated. The Poincaré map is adopted to analyse the stability of a simple non-autonomous system considering a harmonic oscillation behaviour for the combustion environment. The bifurcation diagram of a one-mode model is obtained where the analysis reveals a variety of chaotic behaviours for some select ranges of the bifurcation parameter. The bifurcation parameter and the corresponding period of a two-mode dynamic model are calculated using both analytical and numerical methods. The results computed by different methods are in good agreement. In addition, the dependence of the bifurcation parameter and the period on all the relevant coefficients in the model is investigated in depth. Moreover, a discrete dynamic model accounting for both combustion and vaporization processes is developed. In terms of different bifurcation parameters relevant to either combustion or evaporation, various bifurcation diagrams are presented. As part of the nonlinear characterization, the governing process Lyapunov exponent is calculated and employed to analyze the stability of the particular dynamic system. The study has shown conclusively that the evaporation process has a significant impact on the intensity and nonlinear behaviour of the system of interest, vis-à-vis a model accounting for only the gaseous combustion process. Furthermore, two particular nonlinear control methodologies are adopted to control the chaotic behaviour displayed by the particular aperiodic motions observed. These algorithms are intended to be implemented for control of combustion instability numerically and experimentally to provide a rational basis for some of the control methodologies employed in the literature. Finally, a state of the art neural network is employed to identify and predict the nonlinear behaviour inherent in combustion instability, and control the ensuing pressure oscillations. Essentially, the NARMAX model is implemented to capture nonlinear dynamics relating the input and output of the system of interest. The simulated results accord with the results reported. Moreover, a control system using the NARMA-L2 algorithm is developed. The simulation conclusively points to the fact that the amplitude of pressure oscillations can be attenuated to an acceptable level and the controller proposed may be implemented in a practical manner.

We study the connection between Classical and Quantum Mechanics using the plots of Energy VS. Period for the main families of periodic orbits of certain dynamical system .The quantum E-t plot is defined through the spectrum of the corresponding quantum system, which shows scars of the classical families in the semiclagsical regime. Two Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom both displaying mixed (chaotic and regular) behaviour are analized. The first one is the elastic pendulum, its behaviour ususally presented as a paradigm of classical chaos. Essential aspects of its dinamics are studied to some extent and the classical (E, t ) plot is shown. The second system is the Spin- Boson Hamiltonian, a quantum system for which previous works have defined a classical analogue with chaotic behaviour and compiled the main families of periodic orbits. A quantum version of the (E, t ) plot for this model is shown, and the classical and quantum plots are compared in the regime of soft chaos. The fitting in the semiclassical limit is discussed with a qualitative agreement that indicates enhancements of the scars in the regions where bifurcations of period orbits occur / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física

The specification property in linear dynamics

Bartoll Arnau, Salud 10 March 2016 (has links)
[EN] The dynamics of linear operators, namely linear dynamics, is mainly concerned with the behaviour of iterates of linear transformations. Hypercyclicity is the study of linear operators that possess a dense orbit. Although the first examples of hypercyclic operators are due to G. D. Birkhoff (in 1929), G. R. MacLane (in 1952) and S. Rolewicz (in 1969), we can date the birth of the linear dynamics in 1982 with the unpublished PhD thesis of C. Kitai. Since then, many mathematicians have contributed to the development of this flourishing new area of the analysis. Linear dynamics connects functional analysis and dynamics. As for the classical dynamical systems, one can study the dynamics of linear operators from a topological point of view. In this context, we state that an operator has the specification property (SP). Precisely, the aim of this PhD thesis is to study the specification property on linear dynamical systems. A continuous map on a compact metric space satisfies the specification property if one can approximate pieces of orbits by a single periodic orbits with a certain uniformity. This Doctoral dissertation is a compendium of articles on the specification property. It is structured in four parts preceded by a chapter which introduces the notation, definitions and the basic results that will be needed throughout the thesis. The shift operators on sequence spaces constitute one of the most important test ground for discrete linear dynamical systems. Due to its simple structure, every time you introduce a new property in linear dynamics it is common to check it on weighted shifts operators. It is for this reason that the first part of this research work is devoted to study the specification property for unilateral and bilateral backward shift operators on weighted l^p-spaces and the relationship with other dynamical properties. In Chapter 3 we extend the results on the SP to shift operators on separable sequence F-spaces. An F-space is a vector space that is endowed with an F-norm and that is complete under the induced metric. The notion of an F-norm has the advantage that one can largely argue as if one was working in a Banach space. One need to be aware of the fact that the positive homogeneity of a norm is no longer available. The spaces l^p with 0 < p < 1 are F-spaces. Chaotic dynamical systems have received a great deal of attention in recent years. An operator is chaotic if it has a dense set of periodic points. The specification property is an interesting and rather strong notion of chaos (in the topological sense). We also consider a qualitative strengthening of hypercyclicity namely frequent hypercyclicity. It was introduced by Bayart and Grivaux, motivated by Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. An operator is frequently hypercyclic if there is some element whose orbit meets every non-empty open set very often. In Chapter 4 the specification property is deeply studied for linear and continuous operators on separable F-spaces. In addition, we are interested in finding out its relation with other dynamical properties such as mixing, Devaney chaos and frequent hypercyclicity. The results that we have achieved have been accepted to be publish in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. Finally, in the last chapter of this dissertation, we examine the specification property for strongly continuous semigroups on Banach spaces, that is, for C_0-semigroups. They can viewed as the continuous-time analogue of the discrete-time case of iterates of a single operator; in other words, the parameter in the continuous case plays the role of the iterations in the discrete case. Now the translation semigroups substitute the shift operators as test classes. Once again, we study the relationship between the specification property and mixing, chaos and frequent hypercyclicity properties of a C_0-semigroup. Širokopásmové oběžné kolo odstředivého čerpadla / The wide range impeller.

Wojnar, Pavel January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to propose a pump impeller with higher effectiveness and verify the proposal with the calculation using programs Gambit and Fluent. Three designed impellers were afterwards made using 3D printer and its characteristics were measured in a hydraulic laboratory in Kaplan Department of hydraulic machines. The proposal of a so called wideband impeller of the centrifugal pump was made with chaotic ordering of blade cascades, in one impeller occur blades with various input and output angles and different shapes of blades but all blades have got similar shape in a meridian sectional view of impeller. The thesis was divided into three parts. In the first part, a conforming transformation was theoretically described which was in the thesis used for the shape proposal of impeller blades. In the second part of the thesis final proposals and calculations of pump impellers were made. The third part of the thesis focused on the processing and evaluation of experimental measurement in the hydraulic laboratory and finally the results of the thesis were summarized in the conclusion.
