A comparative study of the impact of parental involvement, peer relationships, and adult mentors on the character development of adolescents

Fees / Character development is core in building a moral society and in the development of an individual (Lickona, 1996; Park, 2009). Building character is a continual developmental process across the lifespan and is subject to a myriad of influences. Character is often defined as the respect an individual has for the rules of the community and cultural surroundings (Lerner, 2007; Lerner et al., 2006; Phelps et al., 2009; Roth & Brooks-Gunn, 2003; Snyder & Flay, 2012). Lickona’s theory of character (1999) distinguishes character development as a continual work in progress, and the morality of an individual contributes “to the cognitive element of character” (2001, p. 246). Additionally, Bronfenbrenner’s (1986; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 1998) bioecological model more specifically identifies the potential relationships within the microsystem as well as between the elements of the microsystem and youth that affect character. The purpose of this study was first, to examine the predictive nature of specific elements of the microsystem including peer relationships, parental involvement, and adult mentors on the development of character during adolescence and, secondly, to examine the change in variance explained by these specific elements on the development of character over time during the high school years. Data to address these questions were drawn from Lerner and colleagues’ (2005) 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses reveal parental involvement to be significant in predicting youth’s self-assessed character during their senior year, and each year between the freshman and senior years. The effects of peer relationships are significant only during the freshmen, sophomore, and senior years. Adult mentors reach positive significance only during the freshman year. When control variables are added, adult mentors are negatively significant during the junior and senior years. Results suggest parent’ involvement in predicting character is more enduring than peer relationships, which is consistent with previous research (Lickona, 2001; Park, 2004). With adult mentors reaching significance for only one year and with the other two years being negatively significant, the results of this study contradict what other research suggests as adult mentors’ integral role in youth development, particularly with frequent engagement in extracurricular activities wherein youth interact with adult advisors. Additional research is needed to understand specifically the role of adult mentors in character development, as well as other developmental areas of high school adolescents.

Character on trial : reading and judgement in Henry Fielding's works

To be placed above the Reach of Deceit is to be placed above the Rank of a human Being - Henry Fielding, A Clear State of the Case of Elizabeth Canning, 1753. Throughout his literary and legal careers, Fielding was concerned with the difficulties of reading and judging character accurately. He saw society as being rife with deceptive and duplicitous individuals and articulated his concerns in his writing, offering various advices to his readers. This thesis examines Fielding’s changing approaches to characterization and his proposed methods for judging character. There is a strong tradition within Fielding criticism, particularly prevalent in the mid-twentieth century, of seeing Fielding’s characters as ‘essential’, that is to say, innate and unchanging: the product of his theory of ‘Conservation of Character’. As such, his characters are often deemed easy-to-read and lacking fully-determined internal lives. Since the mid-1990s, however, critics have begun to argue that his characters are more dynamic than first supposed. While critics have noted the role of judgement in Fielding’s novels, it has not yet been explored in depth in his plays. With some notable exceptions, few studies have explored the interrelation between his novels and plays in a sustained way. I argue that Fielding examines questions of discerning character in both his plays and his novels, and that the early plays are essential for understanding the concepts which are central to his theory of judgement. This thesis contributes to studies of Fielding in three ways: by intervening in long-standing discussions of Fielding’s characterization; by analysing themes of good nature, perception and gossip which develop from his early dramatic work into the better-known novels; and by exploring its relationship to wider ideas about character in the eighteenth-century theatre and novel. Beginning with his plays, I consider Fielding’s presentation of the judgement of character in a range of his works from 1728-1753. I suggest that the early plays gave Fielding the space in which to experiment with the presentation of character and his relationship to his audience. His novels build upon concepts first introduced in the plays, such as good nature, perception and gossip, which he suggests are key to perceiving character. Fielding encourages his audiences and readers to engage with character as a process of discovery (as it is in life), but does not punish or mock them when they make mistakes. In doing so, he gives his audiences and readers indulgences he could ill afford in his magisterial career: time for judgement and the luxury of occasionally being proved wrong.

ARISTOTELIAN-INSPIRED MODEL FOR CURTAILING ACADEMIC DISHONESTY IN THE UNITED STATES

This dissertation explores the growing epidemic of academic dishonesty in the United States in order to propose an Aristotelian-inspired model for developing moral character to curtail this epidemic. The task is laid out in four parts. Chapter one responds to the problem of akrasia, adopting a modified version of Devin Henry's distinction between drunken akrasia and genuine akrasia, holding that the akratic individual experiences an internal struggle similar to that of the self-controlled individual, but the improper desire is stronger than the desire for the proper pleasure. Chapter two responds to the challenges to virtue ethics set forth by social situationists, John Doris (2002) and Gilbert Harman (2000) with a model consistent with Rachana Kamtekar's (2004) depiction of character in Aristotelian virtue ethics that adopts a holistic view of character incorporating motivation and proper intellect as necessary elements in practical reason. Chapter three provides a summary of empirical research into the prevalence of academic dishonesty and the internal and external factors influencing academic dishonesty. This assemblage of data suggests that an effective sustainable solution for curbing academic dishonesty must focus upon the development of internal character rather than the mere modification of external or situational factors. Chapter four applies the findings of the existing data to the development of core principles for a proper moral education intended to offer a foundation for possible solutions towards reducing academic dishonesty in the United States. In light of the current research into academic dishonesty, chapter four outlines core principles essential for developing practical solutions inspired by Aristotle's character-based virtue ethics while recognizing the short-term benefits of situation modification.

O sistema proposto deve atuar no contexto de processos de transcrição do texto de documentos de escritas paleográficas do século XVI ao XIX, documentos estes do Brasil colônia que foram digitalizados a partir dos originais impressos arquivados no Arquivo Ultramarino de Lisboa, uma das realizações do Projeto Resgate do Ministério da Cultura brasileiro. A arquitetura do sistema proposto inclui módulos para segmentar as imagens digitalizadas dos documentos, para análise dos segmentos com OCR na tentativa de reconhecimento do texto, para treinamento do OCR com formação de um dicionário de palavras reconhecidas e para armazenamento do texto transcrito a partir das imagens dos documentos. Para avaliar essa arquitetura foi desenvolvido um protótipo de software que permite ao usuário segmentar manualmente uma imagem de documento, treinar um OCR simples e extrair com esse OCR algumas informações de texto do documento paleográfico digitalizado. Conclui-se que a arquitetura proposta é funcional, ainda que sejam necessários desenvolvimentos mais profundos no que se refere aos processos de segmentação dos documentos e reconhecimento das escritas paleográficas do século XVI ao XIX. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work propose a system architecture for automatic manipulate and recognize of text on paleographic document, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) aggregate with artificial neural networks. The system should work on the context of process text transcription on text documents with paleographic writing of century XVI to XIX; those documents are acquired from Brazil on colony age and digitalized from the original files archived on Ultramario Archive of Lisboa, one works of Projeto Resgate from Brazilian Culture Ministry. The architecture of propose system has modules for segment the digital image of documents, analyze of segments with OCR in try of text recognize, OCR training for compose a dictionary of recognized worlds and also a module for storage the transcript text from document images. For evaluation has been developed prototype software, where one user could manually segment a document image, simple OCR training and using this OCR gets some text information from a digital paleographic document. We conclude that the propose architecture was functional, but still need more improvements on document segmentation module and on module that recognize the paleographic writings of century XVI to XIX.

Chern Character for Global Matrix Factorizations

We give a formula for the Chern character on the DG category of global matrix factorizations on a smooth scheme $X$ with superpotential $w\in \Gamma(\O_X)$. Our formula takes values in a Cech model for Hochschild homology. Our methods may also be adapted to get an explicit formula for the Chern character for perfect complexes of sheaves on $X$ taking values in right derived global sections of the De-Rham algebra. Along the way we prove that the DG version of the Chern Character coincides with the classical one for perfect complexes.

The study was based in the analysis of the character peão boiadero, created through the practice in mímesis corpórea, observin homeless of the city of Campinas as well as observing Nina, a character created based on the behaviour of women landless which have been settled in rural areas. Therefore, this practicle/theoretical investigation focuses the study of the limits between character and type, basing itself in the Commedia dell'Arte and in the Mímesis Corpórea. A generic model for character recognition using digitised input.

This study proposes a generic model for optical character recognition (OCR) on remote objects, using digitised video and digital camera input. Currently, most applications using this technique are ad hoc. Lack of formalism creates the risk of fragmented adhocracy. The purpose of this model is to introduce some degree of formalism based on classical character recognition, thereby providing a theoretical basis, and to explore the potential of character recognition on digital images for automated reading. The model also propogates the use of off the shelf commercial software and hardware currently available. The model “CRODI” which is an abbreviation for Character Recognition On Digital Images, consists of several objects or building blocks necessary for any remote character recognition application. In order to provide an optimal solution for any application it is necessary to select the most appropriate and effective building blocks. The combination and sequence in which these building blocks are selected is called a visual routine. This study does not only focus on choosing the correct building blocks for an application but also describes how certain visual routines and methodologies can be used to cater for applications with a certain profile. Furthermore, a formal notation in the form of an Expert Support System is introduced to describe optimised visual routines and the selection of building blocks in an efficient way. An example is given in chapter six of the efficiency and effectiveness of the model on a classical but dynamic application, where character recognition is performed on stationary and fast moving vehicles’ number plates. The biggest advantage of CRODI is to propose a generic framework or model from which an intuitive selection of objects, visual routines or methodologies can occur to expedite and optimise remote character recognition on almost any stationary or moving object. / Ehlers, E.M., Prof.
