Chen Yi and Her Choral Music: A Study of the Composer's Ideal of Fusing Chinese Music and Modern Western Choral Traditions

Yeung, Hin-Kei 12 1900 (has links)
Chen Yi's music is well accepted and recognized nationally and internationally through an increasing number of commissions and performances. Major symphony orchestras, choruses, institutions and companies request her compositions on many occasions in order to increase understanding and exploration of Chinese influences on western classical idioms. This study provides the first detailed discussion of her compositional mastery and her fusion of Chinese music with the language of western choral traditions. Chen Yi's reputation as a prominent orchestral composer does not restrain her passion to apply instrumental techniques and materials to her quality choral compositions. This study focuses on (1) how hardship and various life experiences during the ten-year Cultural Revolution shaped Chen Yi's musical inspirations; (2) how the influences of major musical genres, such as traditional Chinese folksong, jingju, model play, 19th-20th century nationalism, impressionism, and serialism are consolidated in her kaleidoscopic compositional techniques; and (3) the application of Chinese languages, pedagogical concepts, and extra-musical elements, such as Chinese poems, paintings, and calligraphies, revealed in her original, intelligent and resourceful choral creations.

Chen Zhan (1752-1817) was a prominent emendator and bibliophile in Qianlong-Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. Expert in the study of Confucian classics, Chen particularly held Zheng Xuan in high esteem. Chen also processed a good knowledge of philological studies and semasiology, wherewith he had a liking of Shouwen jiezi. As for his scholarly pursuits, Liji jishuo canding was his important work in the study of Liji. In the earlier Yuan and Ming Dynasties, all scholars engaging in the Liji studies read Liji jishuo, which was completed in the Yuan Dynasty by Chen Hao. This work, however, not only lacks sophistication but also bases its interpretation on the school of Neo-Confucianism .It was heavily criticized in the academia for its substantial deletion of Zheng Xuan’s commentary and Kong Yingda’s annotation. Later in the Qing Dynasty saw the revival of the study of Liji. Relying on the textual research that rectified the omissions in Chen Hao’s work. It was also carried out by means of philological studies and semasiology. In this regards, Zheng Xuan’s commentary was held in high regards, and references was made from various sources to return Liji to its original form. Therefore, Liji jishuo canding was not only a supplement to Liji jishuo, but also a return to Zheng Xuan, a prevailing fashion in the Liji studies of the Qing Dynasty. This paper concludes the background of study of Liji in the Qing Dynasty, the research interests of Chen Zhen as well as his academic-networking with numbers of renowned scholars. A brief introduction of Liji jishuo canding will be included. How Chen Zhan’s cited Zheng Xuan’s commentary to explain and interpret Liji and what attitude he had towards Zheng’s commentary will also be taken in to account. It also evaluates the merits and faults of Chen Zhan’s citation of Zheng commentary and how valuable Liji jishuo canding is towards the study of Liji in the Qing Dynasty. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 伍佩琦. / Parallel title from English abstract. / Thesis (M.Phil.) Distribution of Organotin Compounds in Love River and Chen-Chang River of Kaohsiung

Li, Li-Ting 17 August 2011 (has links)
Kaohsiung Harbor is the largest international sea port in Taiwan, a lot of ships around the world pass in and out frequently, the pollution of organotin is very serious in the harbor area. Love River and Chien-Chen River may be polluted by the seawater tidal action from the Kaohsiung harbor. Domestic, industrial and agricultural wastewaters discharged into the upstream sections may also cause the pollution of organotin. The purposes of this study were to understand sources of organotin pollution by analying the content of organotin compounds and to monitor the organotin pollution of the rivers in Kaohsiung. Samples including surface sediments and riverwaters were collected from nineteen stations of Love River and Chien-Chen River. The results revealed that concentrations of MBT, DBT and TBT in the riverwaters of Love River varied between 13.4-43.6, 2.6-9.9 and ND-13.5 ng/L as tin. The concentrations of MBT, DBT and TBT in the riverwaters of Chien-Chen River were 3.1-28.1, 2.1-10.9 and ND-9.1 ng/L as tin, respectively. The concentrations of MBT, DBT and TBT in the surface sediments of Love River varied between 20.6-92.3, 7.6-26.2 and ND-15.4 ng/g as tin. The concentrations of MBT, DBT and TBT in the surface sediments of Chien-Chen River were in the range of 22.4-70.0, 6.4-14.1, ND-31.9 ng/g as tin, respectively. MBT and DBT were detected in all the samples of all the sampling stations of Love River and Chien-Chen River. Distribution of organotin compounds in riverwaters and surface sediments showed a consistency between these two rivers. No phenyltin pollution was detected at all stations, probably due to the decline in agricultural activities and the ban on utilizing triphenyltin acetate as pesticide. Except the highest organotin pollution appeared in the outfall of Love River and Chien-Chen River, other high values of pollution were found near the upper reaches of both rivers.
