Genetic analyses of reproductive behavior in the domestic fowl and the Japanese quail

Four experiments were conducted in an effort to explain further the genetics and physiology of sexual behavior in chickens and Japanese quail. The populations used in this research included lines that had undergone over 20 generations of divergent selection for high and low mating frequency and the random bred control population from which the selected lines originated. In the first experiment, fertility comparisons under natural and artificial mating situations were made over time among male chickens from the selected and control lines. Although there were highly significant differences among the lines for mating frequency, total fertility was similar among lines when mating was by either natural or artificial means. Significantly more days were needed to reach peak fertility when mating was by natural rather than artificial means. This difference may be attributed to male-female interactions whereby all females in a flock would not be fertilized on the same day in natural mating situations. This same reasoning could explain the significant differences noted between mating situations for duration of fertility. The second experiment examined the mode of inheritance of mating behavior and testosterone levels in chickens using the selected lines plus reciprocal crosses among these lines. No differences among mating combinations were found for circulating testosterone levels. In all cases, androgen titers appeared to be of a sufficient magnitude to influence mating behavior. Heterotic effects were found for mating behaviors in cross-pureline comparisons suggesting that nonadditive genetic variation influences the thresholds for mating in the fowl. Electroencephalographic effects of mating behavior of the selected lines were studied in the third experiment. There was an inverse relationship between number of peaks and voltages per peak, with differences in the number of peaks being significant among lines, implant locations and behavioral situations. Highly significant differences were found among lines for all voltage measurements with the control line having the highest voltage and the low mating line having the lowest voltage. These observations were discussed in the context of their effects on inhibitory and stimulatory mating centers. The genetics of mating frequency in male Japanese quail was studied in the fourth experiment utilizing replicated lines selected for high or low mating frequency and the randombred control line that served as the base population for the selected lines. Comparisons involved the purelines, F₁, F₂ and backcross generation progeny. The results indicate that the primary heritable variation for mating frequency in this species is primarily additive. Correlated responses of cloacal gland size and relative aggressiveness to selection for mating frequency are discussed in the context of alterations in physiological and behavioral responses. / Ph. Effect of supplementing diets with effective microorganisms on intake, growth and carcass characteristics of ross 308 broiler chickens

The first experiment determined the effect of supplementing diets with effective microorganisms on performance of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to three weeks. Two hundred unsexed day-old chicks were randomly assigned to five treatments with four replications, each replication having ten birds. A complete randomized design was used. The chickens were fed a grower diet supplemented with 0 (EM0), 30 (EM30), 50 (EM50), 70 (EM70) or 100 (EM100) ml of effective microorganisms per litre of water. Effective microorganism supplementation did not improve (P>0.05) diet and metabolisable energy intakes of the chickens. Effective microorganism supplementation reduced (P<0.05) growth rate and live weight of the chickens. Poorer (P<0.05) feed conversion ratios were observed in chickens supplemented with effective microorganisms. However, effective microorganism supplementation improved (P<0.05) crude protein retention of the chickens. Supplementation with effective microorganisms reduced (P<0.05) mortality rate of the chickens from 10 to 0 %. The second experiment determined the effect of supplementing diets with effective microorganisms on performance of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. The chickens were randomly allocated to five treatments with four replications, each replication having 10 birds. The chickens aged 21 days, weighing 474 ± 2g, were allocated to the treatments in a complete randomized design. The chickens were fed a grower diet supplemented with 0 (EMM0), 30 (EMM30), 50 (EMM50, 70 (EMM70) or 100 (EMM100) ml of effective microorganisms per litre of water. Effective microorganism supplementation did not improve (P>0.05) intake, DM digestibility, metabolisable energy, feed conversion ratio, fat pad weight and meat sensory attributes of the chickens. Effective microorganism supplementation reduced (P<0.05) growth rate, live weight and carcass weight of the chickens. However, effective microorganism supplementation improved (P<0.05) crude protein retention and crude protein content of meat of the chickens. Supplementation with effective microorganisms reduced (P<0.05) mortality of the chickens from 5 to 0 %. v It is concluded that effective microorganism supplementation to the diets of Ross 308 broiler chickens reduced growth rate and live weight of the chickens. However, effective microorganism supplementation improved crude protein retention and crude protein content of the meat of broiler chickens. Supplementation with effective microorganisms reduced mortality of the chickens to zero.

The effect of genotype and rearing system on chicken meat quality

Thesis (MScFoodSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Modern consumers are health conscious and are shifting towards more naturally produced products such as free range chicken. Commercial broiler strains are not suitable for free range rearing and an alternative genotype is needed that will serve the South African market with the acceptable meat quality as a broiler. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of production system (free range and intensive reared) and genotype (Broiler (COBB™), Ross 308 X Potchefstroom Koekoek hybrid and Potchefstroom Koekoek) on chicken meat quality. This was quantified on the morphological, physical (pH, colour, drip and cooking loss, water holding capacity and tenderness), chemical composition (moisture, protein, fat, ash contents and fatty acid profile), sensory quality and consumer preference of various chicken meat portions. The results of this study indicate that genotype had a more pronounced effect than production system on the morphological and growth properties of chicken meat, as well as on the sensory characteristics and consumer preference. The broilers had the best (P ≤ 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR), highest average daily gain (ADG) and European production efficiency factor (EPEF), followed by the Hybrid and then the Potchefstroom Koekoek. For each genotype, the free range chickens produced heavier (P ≤ 0.05) live weights than intensively reared chickens. Despite the poorer growth performance and efficiency of the medium growing Hybrid birds, they had less mortality and fewer leg disorders than the broiler. Additional to these factors, the Hybrid Free Range had higher thigh, drumstick and wing yields (P ≤ 0.05) than the broiler. When investigating the correlation between the chemical and sensory data, it was observed that the Hybrid scored significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) in both flavour and aroma than the Broiler and Koekoek genotypes for both production systems. For colour, pH and polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio (PUFA:SFA), the effect of production system was more pronounced than the effect of genotype. Rearing chickens in a free range environment increased the PUFA:SFA ratio (P ≤ 0.05), making it beneficial to human health. Free range rearing resulted in lower muscle pHu (P ≤ 0.05), darker (L* value) (P ≤ 0.05), less red and yellow (a* and b* value) (P ≤ 0.05) chicken meat. It also influenced the chemical composition in different carcass portions; for example, a lower fat content in the thigh and higher protein in the breast of the Broiler. Correlation with the sensory results indicated that juiciness, tenderness, chicken aroma and chicken flavour are the main drivers of liking for consumer’s preference towards chicken meat. The consumers predominantly preferred the Hybrid (P ≤ 0.05) in a blind tasting session, but when information was given on the production system of a chicken product, the consumers lean more towards a free range reared product than an intensive reared product. This indicates that consumer perception plays an immense role in consumer decision making. Cluster analysis was also performed to ascertain whether the consumers differed in their degree of liking of the intrinsic character of the respective chicken samples. Three different clusters of consumers were identified: 1) Consumers that prefer free range reared chicken meat, 2) Consumers that prefer intensively reared chicken meat, 3) Consumers that prefer both free range and intensive reared chicken meat. In conclusion, the Hybrid seems to be a viable option for free range production systems in South Africa, without negatively affecting the overall quality of the meat or consumer acceptance. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Moderne verbruikers is baie meer gesonheidsbewus en verkies meer natuurlik geproduseerde produkte soos vrylopende (free range) hoenders. Die kommersiële braaikuiken is nie geskik vir vrylopende produksie nie en `n ander genotipe word benodig wat die Suid-Afrikaanse mark sal kan voorsien met aanvaarbare vleiskwaliteit vergelykbaar met dié van die braaikuiken. Die doel van hierdie navorsing was om die effek van produksiestelsel (vrylopend en intensief) en genotipe (braaikuiken (COBB™), Potchefstroom Koekoek en Ross 308 X Potchefstroom Koekoek kruising) op die morfologiese, fisiese (pH, kleur, drip- en kookverlies, waterhouvermoë en taaiheid), chemiese samestelling (vog-, proteïen-, vet-, asinhoud en vetsuurprofiel), sensoriese kwaliteit en verbruikersaanvaarbaarheid van verskeie hoender vleis porsies te bepaal. Hierdie navorsing het getoon dat genotipe `n groter invloed gehad het as produksiestelsel op die groei en morfologiese eienskappe van die hoenders, asook op die sensoriese eienskappe en verbruikersaanvaarbaarheid. Die braaikuiken, gevolg deur die Ross X Koekoek kruising en dan die Koekoek, het die beste (P ≤ 0.05) voeromsetverhouding (FCR), gemiddelde daaglikse toename (GDT) en Europese produksie effektiwiteitsfaktor (EPEF) getoon. Vrylopende hoenders se vleis is donkerder (L*) (P ≤ 0.05) en het ook laer rooi, geel (a* en b*) en pH (P ≤ 0.05) waardes getoon. Produksiestelsel effek het ook variërende chemiese waardes in verskillende karkas porsies tot gevolg gehad: ʼn laer vetinhoud is gevind in die dy en ʼn hoër proteïeninhoud in die borsies van die braaikuikens wat vrylopend grootgemaak is. Korrelasies met die sensoriese data het ook getoon dat sappigheid, taaiheid en hoendervleis geur die grootste dryfvere is in verbruikersaanvaarbaarheid. Tydens die verbruikerstoetse waar die verbruikers die gaar hoendervleis blind geproe het, het die verbruikers oor die algemeen meer gehou van die Ross X Koekoek kruising in vergelyking met die ander hoender genotipes (P ≤ 0.05), maar sodra inligting oor die verskillende produksiestelsels gegee is, het die verbruikers aangedui dat hulle hoenders wat vrylopend groot gemaak is, verkies. Dit dui daarop dat persepsies ʼn baie belangrike rol speel in die verbruiker se finale besluitnemingsproses. In die lig van bogenoemde resultate wil dit voorkom of kruisteling tussen die gewone braaikuiken en die Potchefstroom Koekoek ʼn moontlike opsie is vir die Suid-Afrikaanse vryloop hoenderbedryf. Hierdeur word daar van vrylopende produksie stelsels gebruik gemaak sonder om die vleiskwaliteit of gebruikers aanvaarbaarheid negatief te beïnvloed.

Towards the modeling of indigenous poultry production in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa: characterization and extension evaluation for poverty reduction

Poverty remains a critical issue mostly in the rural South Africa. Various initiatives, policies and programs have been enacted by the government with attempting to reduce poverty at the national and provincial levels; poverty is yet to be abated. The target of the Millennium Development Goal 1 (MDG1) of halving poverty by the year 2015 notwithstanding, poverty remains a threat to quality livelihoods. Agriculture has continued to be one of the pillars of government efforts to address poverty. However, in livestock production interventions, efforts of government had largely been on cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and exotic poultry with little attention being given to indigenous poultry production (IPP). This study explores the option of using IPP to address rural poverty by capitalizing on its minimal inputs while recognizing its prevalence in a variety of households. The study addresses the characterization of the IPP from the perspectives of housing, feeding, healthcare management, breeding and marketing options.Skill competencies of the indigenous poultry farmers (IPFs) and the Agricultural Development Technicians (ADTs) were examined. This study reviewed poultry models in different parts of the world with special attention to Africa. The human resource development program of the department of rural development and agrarian reform was discussed. The study employed the use of multi-methods approach, the quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Descriptive statistical analysis, frequent count, percentage, means, standard deviation, chisquare, and principal component analysis was used in the quantitative data analysis while the “open social system” was used for the qualitative methodology. Findings revealed that IPFs face some challenges among which are, the poor housing that exposed the birds to inclement weather, predator attacks and stock theft, high mortality of chicks after hatching and expensive feed for the flock. The IPFs showed competencies in nine skill items that included ability to identify chicken predators (x=3.92) and high yielding chickens (x=3.79); control of predators(x=3.77); methods of using ethno veterinary drugs to treat chicken diseases and pests (x=3.72), and identify signs of diseases (x=3.69), among others. However, the ADTs did not show any competency in any of the 32 skills items. The principal component analysis with Varimax rotation was performed to ascertain the dimensionality of the measures. Six factors with eigen value of >1, which accounted for 77.317% were extracted, with each factor loading ranging from 0.523 to 0.93. Factor loading after rotation that emerged on the same component was described; as brooding, shelter and care of the chicks; predators and healthcare; hygiene and litter management; feeds and feeding stuff; and record keeping and marketing. The findings on the human resource development revealed that staff meetings were the most common method of capacity development. This was followed by in-service-training, formal study, workshop, and on the job training. The farmers’ field school and study tours were sparingly used. However, respondents were in favor of on-site training, staff meetings, formal study and in-service training. The findings on the appropriate model suggest a theoretical indigenous poultry production model (IPPM) for the Eastern Cape Province (ECP). The “open social system” was used to develop a framework for an indigenous poultry cooperative society (to be known as Abafuyi Benkukhu Zemveli [ABZ]). This was meant to create a binding force for capacity development, a strong economic foundation through equity contributions, creation of marketing channels, and the development of a concept of ‘‘our own'' product in the market. Lastly, the study offers options for a training program that would accommodate the new initiatives, with a strong capacity development training approach. In this context, the study advocates for institutional support for the IPFs and the incorporation of indigenous poultry in the curriculum of the agricultural training programs at higher education institutions in South Africa.

Effect of bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching on performance and carcass characteristics of ross 308 broiler chickens

Agriculture (Animal Production)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching on performance and carcass characteristics of male Ross 308 broiler chickens. The experiment was based on 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hours of liquid bovine colostrum feeding after hatching of broiler chickens. The experiment commenced with 180 male Ross 308 broiler chicks with an initial live weight of 42 ± 2g per bird and was carried out for six weeks. The chicks were randomly assigned to six treatments with three replications, resulting in 18-floor pens with 10 chicks per replicate. A complete randomized design was used in this experiment. Data was analysed using the General Linear Model (GLM) procedures of the Statistical Analysis of system, Version 9.3.1 software program. Where there were significant differences, mean separation was done using the Turkey test at the 5% level of significance. A quadratic regression model was used to determine the optimum productivity of the experiment while a linear model was used to determine the relationships between bovine colostrum feeding period and responses in the variables measured. Feed intake during Week 1, growth rate during Week 3 and feed conversion ratio (FCR) during Weeks 2 and 3 of the growing period of male Ross 308 broiler chickens were not affected (p>0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding periods after hatching. Similarly, bovine colostrum feeding had no effect (p>0.05) on diet dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and ash digestibilities in male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 14 to 21 days. Bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching had no effect (p>0.05) on nitrogen retention (N-retention) in male broiler chickens aged one to 21 days. Similarly, gut organ digesta pH, length and weight of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 21 days were not improved (p>0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding after hatching. However, bovine colostrum feeding improved (p<0.05) feed intake during Weeks 2 and 3 of the growing period of male Ross 308 broiler chickens. Similarly, bovine colostrum feeding after hatching improved (p<0.05) crude protein (CP) digestibility in male broiler chickens aged 14 to 21 days. Metabolisable energy (ME) intake of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 21 days was improved (p<0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching. Similarly, growth rate of male broiler v chickens during Weeks 1 and 2 was improved (p<0.05) by colostrum feeding after hatching. Feed conversion ratio of male broiler chickens during Week 1 was improved (p<0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching. Bovine colostrum feeding after hatching improved (p<0.05) live weight of male Ross 308 broiler chickens at the ages of 7, 14 and 21 days. Nitrogen retention and FCR of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days were not affected (p>0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding after hatching. In addition, live weights of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 35 and 42 days were not affected (p>0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching. Similarly, bovine colostrum feeding had no effect (p>0.05) on gut organ digesta pH, large intestine lengths, breast and drumstick weights and breast meat juiciness of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 42 days. However, bovine colostrum feeding improved (p<0.05) feed intake and growth rate of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. Live weights of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 28 days were improved (p<0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching. Similarly, bovine colostrum feeding after hatching did not affect (p<0.05) diet DM, CP, NDF, ADF and ash digestibilities in male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 35 to 42 days. Metabolisable energy intake of male broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days was improved (p<0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding period after hatching. Similarly, GIT, small intestine and caecum lengths and crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, caecum, large intestine, carcass and thigh weights of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 42 days were improved (p<0.05) by bovine colostrum feeding after hatching. Bovine colostrum feeding after hatching improved (p<0.05) breast meat tenderness, flavour and shear force of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 42 days. It is concluded that reasons for differing responses to bovine colostrum feeding periods of up to 72 hours after hatching are not clear. Effects of natuzyme® supplementationon fibre digestion, growth and carcass characteristics of male ross 308 broiler chickens

The first experiment determined the effect of natuzyme50® supplementation on feed intake, growth and live weight of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 21 days. Unsexed day old chicks were assigned to 4 different natuzyme50® supplementation levels of 0.0 (UNZ0), 0.75 (UNZ0.75), 1.0 (UNZ1.0) and 1.5 (UNZ1.5) g/kg DM feed, replicated 4 times and each replicate having 10 chicks. A general linear model (SAS, 2008) was used to analyse the data. Ross 308 broiler chickens on a diet supplemented with 1.5g of natuzyme50® per kg DM had higher (P<0.05) DM feed intake than those on a diet not supplemented with natuzyme50®. Natuzyme50® supplementation did not (P>0.05) have any significant effect on growth rate of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 21 days. Unsexed broiler chickens on a diet supplemented with 1.5g of natuzyme50® per kg DM had higher (P<0.05) live weights than those on a diet not supplemented with natuzyme50® at the age of 21 days The second experiment determined the effect of natuzyme50® supplementation on feed intake, growth performance and carcass characteristics of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. The chickens aged 22 days were assigned to 4 natuzyme50® supplementation levels of 0.0 (MNZ0), 0.75 (MNZ0.75), 1.0 (MNZ1.0) and 1.5 (MNZ1.5) g/kg DM feed, replicated 4 times and each replicate having 6 chickens. The diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. A general linear model (SAS, 2008) was used to analyse the data obtained. Natuzyme50® supplementation level had no effect (P>0.05) on feed intake of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. However, natuzyme50® supplementation level had effect (P<0.05) on growth rate of male Ross broiler chickens aged 22-42 days. Male Ross 308 broiler chickens on a diet supplemented with 1.5g of natuzyme50® per kg DM had higher (P<0.05) growth rates than those on a diet supplemented with 1.0g of natuzyme50® per kg DM. However, the significant differences did not extend to birds on a diet not supplemented with natuzyme50®, diets supplemented with 0.75 or 1.5g of natuzyme50® per kg DM which vi showed similar (P>0.05) growth rates. Natuzyme50® supplementation levels used had no effect (P>0.05) on carcass, breast and drumstick weights of male Ross 308 broiler chickens. Natuzyme50® supplementation levels had no effect (P>0.05) on meat juiciness. However, natuzyme50® supplementation improved (P<0.05) meat tenderness and flavour. Increasing natuzyme50® level of supplementation decreased (P<0.05) meat shear force values. It is concluded that natuzyme50® supplementation improved (P<0.05) meat tenderness and flavour, and reduced meat shear force values of male Ross 308 broiler chickens. An investigation of the long-run relationship between import tariff, import quantity, production and prices in the broiler section of South Africa (April 2010-June 2022)

South Africa is described as a net importer of chicken meat, given that broiler consumption of broiler is greater than supply. Additionally, the South African Poultry industry has raised concerns regarding the high influx of cheap broiler imports into the domestic market. This led to an increase of the ad valorem tariff charged on poultry imports in April 2020 from a previous adjustment in September 2013. It is vital to understand how import tariff changes affect the broiler sector since little is known about how domestic broiler production is responding to an increased tariff. The study, therefore, attempted to determine the relationship between domestic broiler production, import tariff, domestic prices, and import volume. The study aimed to investigate the long-run relationship between import tariff, import quantity, domestic production, and prices (retail and producer) in the broiler sector of South Africa for the period (April 2010 – June 2020). Brazilian frozen chicken imports were selected for study given their relatively high domestic demand in South Africa. In addition, Brazil primarily faces the import tariffs charged by South Africa as the main country of origin for South African imports. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller test, Johansen Cointegration tests, and the Error Correction Model were used as analytical tools in achieving the study objectives. The results for the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test and the Johansen cointegration test showed that all variables were stationary at first difference and cointegrated. The ECM results concluded the existence of a long-run relationship between domestic production, ad valorem tariff, and import volume. As the tariff charged changes, the domestic production increased by 4% in the long run which might be deemed a small advantage in terms of the production scale and therefore not sufficient. The study recommended that strategies that reduce barriers of entry for small-scale farmers such as reduced production costs be implemented to boost domestic production. Lastly, since domestic production is responding positively to tariff adjustment, a thorough investigation is necessary to prove dumping allegations against broiler importers as this will enable the country to impose anti-dumping duties on all countries. / Agri SETA

Effects of replacing maized meal with a low tannin white sorghum meal, macia on productivity of ross 308 broiler chickens

Agriculture (Animal Production)) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of replacing maize meal with a low tannin sorghum meal (Macia) on productivity, gut morphology, carcass characteristics and bone morphometrics of Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 42 days. In each experiment, a total of 160 Ross 308 broiler chickens were assigned to a complete randomized design with 5 treatments, replicated 4 times with 8 chickens per replicate. Five diets were formulated to contain sorghum replacement levels at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% to meet the nutrient requirements of Ross 308 broiler chickens. Data was analysed using statistical analysis of variance. The first experiment determined the effect of replacing maize meal with a low tannin white sorghum meal on productivity and gut morphology of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 1 to 21 days. Feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio, live weight, N-retention, caecum and large intestine digesta pH, large intestine lengths, crop, gizzard, caecum and large intestine weights, gut intestinal villi height, crypt depth and villi height to crypt depth ratio of unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens were not affected (P>0.05) by the treatment effects. However, replacement of maize meal with sorghum meal improved (P<0.05) metabolisable energy intake and small intestine digesta pH values. It was concluded that maize meal can be replaced by a low tannin white sorghum meal in the diet without adverse effects on unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens aged one to 21 days. The second experiment determined the effect of replacing maize meal with sorghum meal on productivity, gut morphology, carcass characteristics and bone morphometrics of Ross 308 male broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. Replacing maize meal with sorghum meal had no effect (P>0.05) on feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), live weight and nitrogen retention (N-retention) of male Ross 308 broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. Replacing maize meal with sorghum meal improved (P<0.05) ME intake and growth rate of the chickens. Caecum and large intestine digesta pH, GIT, caecum and large intestine lengths, small intestine, caecum and large intestine weights, gut intestinal villi height, crypt depth and villi height to crypt depth ratio, drumstick, thigh and wing weights, drumstick, thigh and wing colour, meat sensory evaluation, meat pH and bone morphometrics of male Ross 308 broiler chickens were not affected (P>0.05) by replacement of maize meal with sorghum vii meal. It was concluded that maize meal can be replaced by a low tannin white sorghum meal at 25, 50, 75 and 100% levels without causing adverse effects on productivity and carcass characteristics of male broiler chickens aged 22 to 42 days. The effects of dietary crude protein on fertility of broiler breeder males.

Fertility of Broiler Breeders (BBs) has been researched over many years with inconclusive findings. Genetic selection and improvements in growth traits have had negative effects on fertility of BB. One explanation is related to overweight birds, resulting in the inability of birds to copulate successfully, with no cloacal contact. The requirements of CP for egg production in BB females have been quantified, but there is less literature on how CP affects fertility in male BBs. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of feeding BB males different dietary CP intakes (10.4, 12.4, 14.2, 17.8, 19.3 and 20.1 g CP/bird/day) on fertility in flocks with natural mating and in birds that were artificially inseminated (AI). Results showed that birds consuming 10.4 and 12.4 g CP/bird/day resulted in weight loss (between 24.9 and 23.6% and 26.5 and 22.4% below target BW) over the 29 weeks of the experimental period in both natural mating and individual pens respectively. Intakes of higher protein content (17.8- 20.1 g CP/bird/day) however resulted in BW gain over the experimental period. Hatch percentage across all CP intakes throughout the duration of the study was found to be high, ranging between 75- 100 and 80-95 % in AI and naturally mated birds respectively, and not affected by CP intakes. Similar results for predicted fertility using the methods published by Brillard & Antoine (1990) and Wishart (1997) were found; however Brillard & Antoine (1990) is more lenient requiring less outer perivitelline layer (OPVL) sperm/mm2 to pronounce an egg fertile. Improved fertility predictions could have been made by using examination of inner perivitelline layer (IVPL). There was a tendency for a superior response in predicted fertility from birds with a protein intake of 14.2 g CP/bird/day. Effects of 4x4 full diallel crossbreeding of chickens on growth production performance, genetics and phenotypic characteristics

Poultry provide affordable animal protein products compared to other animal products in agricultural industry. The demand of organic food by world health organisation and call for discard of conventional laying cage production method led to this research study. The aim of the study was to determine how (4 x 4) full diallel crossbreeding of the Potchefstroom Koekoek (PK), Naked neck (NN), Lohmann Brown (LB) and White Leghorn (WL) had an effect on production performance, egg parameters, genetic and phenotypic characteristics of F1 crossbreed offspring. The study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), Livestock Production Improvement at the Irene Campus, which is situated about 25 km south of Pretoria. The (4 x 4) full diallel crossbreeding design used on four chicken breeds to produce four pure breeds, six crossbreeds and six reciprocal crosses. The total number of 352 chickens with16 treatments (2 cocks and 20 hens) used in phase 1 and 384 chickens 16 F1-treatments (3 cocks + 21 hens) used in phase 2. Data was analysed by full factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA), General Linear Model procedures and Scheffe post-hoc for multiple comparison of the means of different variable data. The outcome had shown that crossbreeding had an effect on the production performance, genetic and phenotypic characteristics. The performed F1 crossbreeds emerge from crossbreeding between the local dual-purpose PK and commercial LB chicken breeds. PKLB dominated on growth and production performance traits compared to other crossbreeds. All set null hypothesis differ significantly at (p < 0.05), the outcome of all five hypothesis of this study were rejected.
