Archival anthropometry : an analysis of the anthropometric data of Native American children gathered by Franz Boas, 1888-1902Kirkpatrick, Kristin A. 30 November 2001 (has links)
Franz Boas collected anthropometric data on approximately 15,000 people
from over 200 Native American tribal groups between 1888 and 1902. Twelve
basic measurements were taken: standing height, shoulder height, height to digit
III, arm span, sitting height, shoulder width, head length and width, face height and
breadth, and nose height and breadth. At the turn of the century, Boas was unable
to efficiently analyze these data. With computers now commonplace, several
investigations of the adult anthropometric data have been undertaken in recent
years; however, analysis of the child anthropometric data has not been undertaken.
This study analyzes child anthropometric data from Western North
America, giving special emphasis to children on the Siletz and Klamath
Reservations. More specifically, this study investigates the occurrence of
morphological differences in Native American children as a result of living within
the reservation system. It is well known that environmental factors play a crucial
role in child growth and development, and the effect of those factors can be measured through anthropometry. Differences in the growth and development of
the children on each reservation can be related to their unique histories.
An investigation of the literature and records kept by the Bureau of Indian
Affairs reveals differing socioeconomic conditions on the Siletz and Klamath
Reservations. Both reservations failed agriculturally, but while many Klamath
became successful in cattle raising and logging, the Siletz were unable to fully enter
these lucrative occupations. Additionally, the unratified treaties of many Siletz
tribes left the reservation without adequate support from the government, while the
Klamath received rations and supplies as stipulated by their ratified treaty.
Descriptive statistics and growth distance curves reveal that the Klamath are
shorter than the total sample of Western North American Indians, and the Siletz,
particularly the males, are shorter than the Klamath. The shorter stature is due to
the proportionately shorter legs of the Siletz, a finding that is consistent with other
studies of populations living in depressed socioeconomic conditions. / Graduation date: 2002

The body composition of children and adolescents with congenital heart disease and residual pulmonary regurgitation (PR) was compared to that of healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Testing included height, weight, skinfolds, skeletal widths, circumferences, bio-electrical impedance (for estimation of total body water from resistance index), hydrostatic weighing, bone mineral content from single photon absorptiometry, and an assessment of maturational status. Activity levels were assessed by questionnaires and an accelerometer. The two groups were found to be different in height, skeletal widths, bone mineral content, bone mineral index and total body water determined by bio-electrical impedance. After adjusting the data for height differences, the groups were different for skeletal widths and bone mineral index. The PR and control subjects had similar skinfolds and circumferences, as well as percent fat determined by body density, body water and bone mineral content.

Growth spurt in height and weight of children in rural South Africa : the case of Ellisras longitudinal studyNembidzane, Chris January 2018 (has links)

Theaimofthe study was to analyse the growth spurt in height and weight of children using the ELS. This is part of the on going ELS and this study followed secondary analytical longitudinal study using data collected from November 1996 to November 2003. All children underwent a series of anthropometric measurements of height and weight according to the standard procedures recommended by the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry. The descriptive statistics was done for age, height, weight, velocity and acceleration by gender amongst rural children in Ellisras. Thelinearmixedmodelwasusedto analyse data. Based on the smallest values of AIC and BIC, the best model to fit the ELS data which was found to be the unstructured covariance structure model was chosen. The interaction between age and gender, which was significant at 5% level suggested that the relationship of age with growth varies depending on gender. There was also a significant positive linear relationship of age with distance.
The onset of growth spurt for rural children in Ellisras was at 12.05 years for boys and at 12.32 years for girls, while the Senegalese boys took off earlier at 11.02 years. Ellisras rural boys and USA boys had their onset of growth spurt almost at the same age at 13 years for USA boys and 12.05 years for Ellisras rural boys. USA girls had their onset of growth spurt earlier at 11 years than Ellisras rural girls at 12.32 years. Newcastle upon Tyne adolescents reached

their PHV at 14 and 12 years for boys and girls respectively, similarly with Ellisras rural children at 14.21 and 11.80 years for boys and girls respectively. Ellisras rural girls had their PHV at 11.80 years earlier than Ellisras rural boys at 14.21 years. Children in rural Ellisras in the ELS and their growth variations do not differ that much compared with other children across the world.

Factors contributing to the adequate vitamin A status and poor anthropometric status of 24-59-month-old children from an impoverished Northern Cape communityNel, Jana 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MNutr)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Objective: To examine the factors that may influence the vitamin A and anthropometric status of 24-59-month-old children from an impoverished community with a very high prevalence of stunting, but virtually no vitamin A deficiency.
Design: Cross sectional, descriptive study with analytical components.
Setting: Calvinia West, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
Subjects: Biological mothers (n=150) and their children aged 24-59 months (n=150) living in Calvinia West from 6 months of age or younger.
Methods: A general interviewer-administered questionnaire comprising of socio-demographic information, a 24-hour recall and an adjusted food frequency questionnaire, focussing on liver intake, were used in the data collection process. Anthropometric measurements (weight and height) were also performed.
Results: Results showed that liver consumption alone contributed to more than 100% of the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) for vitamin A of the pre-school children in this community. Liver was eaten by 84.7% (n=127) of the children and 68% (n=102) of them ate liver at least once per month. The average portion size of the children who consumed liver was 66g at a time. The national food fortification programme contributed to a further 80 μg Retinol Equivalents (RE) and the national supplementation programme 122μg RE of vitamin A per day. There was a significant (p=0.028) inverse association between the amount of liver intake and household income. Liver intake was also significantly (p=0.016) higher in the children whose mothers were unskilled as opposed to those with skilled mothers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards 36.9% (n=55) of the children were stunted (low height for age), 25.5% (n=38) were underweight for age and 12.1% (n=18) were wasted (low weight for height). The mean birth weight of the children (n=141) was 2826g (SD=592). Of these children, 27.7% (n=39) had a low birth weight (<2500g). There was a significant positive correlation (r=0.250; p=0.003) between the birth weight of the child and the child's current height for age. The height of the mother, as well as several indicators of socio-economic status, also correlated significantly with the height for age of the child.
Conclusion: In this impoverished community the anthropometric status of the children was poor, but vitamin A deficiency was largely addressed through the regular intake of liver. Poor anthropometric status is therefore not always an indicator of micronutrient deficiencies and blanket supplementation approaches are not necessarily the solution in a country with diverse cultures and eating habits. Apart from the immediate risks and consequences of underweight, stunting and wasting in a community, stunting may also lead to overweight and obesity in the long term. This may result in diseases of lifestyle in later life, adding a further burden to an already weakened community. Appropriate evidence-based interventions aimed at the first thousand days of life should be a priority in this community. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Doel: Om die faktore wat kan bydrae tot die vitamien A en die antropometriese status van kinders 24-59-maande in 'n arm gemeenskap met 'n baie hoë voorkoms van dwerggroei, maar byna geen vitamien A gebrek, te ondersoek.

Samevatting: In hierdie arm gemeenskap was die antropometriese status van die kinders swak, maar vitamien A gebrek was grootliks aangespreek deur die gereelde inname van lewer. 'n Swak antropometriese status is dus nie altyd 'n aanduiding van mikronutriënt tekorte nie en 'n oorkoepelende aanslag van supplementasie is nie noodwendig 'n oplossing in 'n land met diverse kultuur en eetgewoontes nie. Behalwe vir die onmiddelike gevare van ondergewig, dwerggroei en uittering in 'n gemeenskap, het kinders met dwerggroei 'n groter risiko om oorgewig en vetsugtig te word in die langtermyn. Dit kan lewensstyl siektes veroorsaak in latere lewe en 'n verdere las op 'n reeds verswakte gemeenskap plaas. Toepaslike intervensies, gemik op die eerste duisend dae van lewe, behoort 'n prioriteit te wees in hierdie gemeenskap.

Anthropometry and diet of Mohawk schoolchildren in KahnawakeTrifonopoulos, Mary January 1995 (has links)
Anthropometry, dietary intakes and food preferences of Mohawk children in Kahnawake were studied. Overweight, defined by body mass index at and above the 85th percentile of United States all-race children was 29.6% in boys and 32.8% in girls aged 5 to 12 years; rates were generally lower than those reported for Native North American schoolchildren using same criterion. Compared with U.S. data, there were greater differences in subscapular than triceps skinfold thicknesses, suggesting a more central distribution of subcutaneous fat. Mean energy intakes of Grades 4 to 6 children were adequate to achieve normal growth, and height-for-age and weight-for-height showed no evidence of malnutrition. Mean fat intake as a percentage of total energy was lower than average seen in North American schoolchildren ($<$35% at p $<$ 0.001). Twenty percent of children reported consumption of traditional or cultural Mohawk food. Children had a high preference for most of 24 food items assessed.

Nutrient intakes, dietary diversity, hunger perceptions and anthropometry of children aged 1-3 years in households producing crops and livestock in South Africa : a secondary analysis of national food consumption survey of 1999.Bolaane, Lenkwetse. January 2006 (has links)
Children less than five years of age are at a risk of growth failure worldwide. The
South African National Food Consumption Survey (NFCS) of 1999 showed that
25.5% of children aged 1 - 3 years were stunted. Poor growth of young children in
developing countries (South Africa included) has been associated with multiple
micronutrient deficiencies because of the use of starchy plant-based complementary
foods with little variety, especially among resource poor households. Dietary
diversification through the use of crop and livestock production has been
recommended as a strategy to improve the micronutrient intake and food security of
households in resource poor settings.
This study was a cross sectional secondary analysis of the South African NFCS of
1999 data, designed to investigate the impact of crop and livestock production on
nutrient intake, dietary diversity, intake of selected food groups, hunger perceptions
and anthropometric status of children aged 1 - 3 years in South Africa. Children
from households producing crops only (n=211), crops and livestock (n=110),
livestock only (n=93) and non-producers were compared at the national, in rural
areas and among households with a total income of less than R12 000.00 per
household per year.
In rural areas and among households with a total income of less than R12 000.00 per
household per year, children in the crops and livestock group had higher nutrient
intakes for energy, vitamin 86, calcium and folate than the other groups (p<0.05),
while the crops only group had higher nutrient intakes for vitamin A and vitamin C.
The majority of children in all the four study groups had less than 67% of the RDAs
for vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron and zinc. In addition , children in all the
groups had a median dietary diversity score of four out of 13 food groups. In rural
areas and among low income households, higher percentages (over 60%) of children
in the crops only group consumed vegetables while the non-producers group was the
lowest (47.7%). The non-producers group had the highest percentages of children
consuming meat and meat products and the crops and livestock and livestock only
groups had the lowest percentages. In both rural areas and among households withlow income, the majority of the households in all the study groups were experiencing
hunger. In rural areas, one in five households were food secure.
Crop and livestock production improved the nutrient intake and the intake of
vegetables of children in rural and poor households. However, nutrient intakes were
not adequate to meet the recommended nutrient levels. The high levels of food
insecurity require support of these households to increase crop and livestock
production and, integration of nutrition education to increase the consumption of the
