The association between sleep duration and childhood obesity in China : a systematic reviewWu, Xiaoye, 吴晓烨 January 2013 (has links)
Objective: Obesity has become one of the major global public epidemic problems while the knowledge of childhood obesity is a bit limited within Chinese study. This review examined the association between sleep duration and childhood overweight and obesity in China.
Methods: This systematic review was conducted by searching online electronic resources of papers from PubMed and Chinese database CNKI published up to 2013. The keywords of “sleep” OR “risk factors” AND “obesity OR overweight” AND “child OR adolescent” AND “China OR Hong Kong OR Taiwan” were used for searching and identifying. The search filter to restrict the study design as the observational study written in English or Chinese in these databases was used.
Results: Four case-control studies, and eight cross-sectional studies were included in the systematic review. Despite of different method in assessing sleep duration, all included studies suggested that sleep duration is consistently and negatively related with childhood obesity, mainly assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI) in China.
Conclusion: Most included articles reported the association between short sleep duration and childhood obesity/overweight. However, given the cross-section nature of the data, the causal relation between sleep duration and obesity remains unclear. Whether sleep duration may be the factor to be considered in childhood obesity prevention strategies remains to be confirmed possibly by studies with longitudinal design or randomized control trials. / published_or_final_version / Medicine / Master / Master of Public Health

Sleep difficulties in primary school-aged children : a role for the educational psychologistDe'Cage, Sanchia January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the paucity of literature present on educational psychology involvement in supporting primary school-aged children’s sleep. The research was formed using a pragmatic, mixed-methods approach with a two-phase design. Phase one explored the views of 59 participants (teachers, n= 16; parents/carers, n= 21; children, n= 22) about children’s sleep, their academic outcomes and psychosocial functioning. There were some associations between parent, child, and teacher reports of children’s sleep-related difficulties, academic outcomes and aspects of children’s psychosocial functioning. Phase two adopted a time-series pre- and post-intervention design with the aim of evaluating a school-based, six-week Sleep Club intervention for children. Twenty-nine participants (teaching assistants, n= 2; parents/carers, n= 13; and children, n= 14) took part in phase two, with the findings drawing on evaluations, quizzes, field notes, surveys, and parent interviews. Six children were selected to provide greater insight into parent and child views through case study analysis. At the end of the intervention, there was an increase in children’s sleep-related knowledge, and there were improvements in many aspects of children’s sleep-related behaviours. Thematic analysis identified that the Sleep Club facilitated communication about sleep between children and their parents and raised children’s awareness and understanding of their sleep. Children enjoyed being part of a club with other children, from whom they felt they were able to learn. Learning about emotions, sleep and the body was noted by several children, though some children did not enjoy completing the given questionnaires. Overall, participants felt that the individual sessions and the intervention could have lasted longer than the time offered. Twenty-two participants (76%, including parents, children, and school staff) reported that they would recommend the Sleep Club intervention to others. The role of the educational psychologist in supporting children with sleep difficulties is discussed.

The theoretical part deals with the physiology of sleep and sleep disorders. The practical part were processed by means of qualitative and quantitative research . The aim of our thesis and our research was to determine the incidence of sleep disorders in different age categories. The aim of the qualitative part was to determine the causes and effects of sleep disorders in children and adolescents. In practice , the qualitative part certainly importance , especially for teachers , case reports indicate that some other sleep disorders affect child development , behavior and school performance. In this thesis we compare the quantitative survey targeted four designated groups of children . One group of preschool children are 1-6 years old . The second group consists of a sample of pupils of primary school 7 - 11 years . The penultimate group of children at the elementary school , aged 12 - 15 years. The last group are secondary school students aged 16-18 years . At the beginning of quantitative research, we set three hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 were not confirmed . Childhood obstructive sleep apnoea: assessment and complications. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collectionJanuary 2008 (has links)
Childhood OSA is increasingly recognized to be associated with a variety of complications including neurocognitive and cardiovascular diseases. The intermediate link between OSA and end organ damage has been suggested to be inflammation, and both local airway and systemic inflammation have been described in adults with OSA. A non-invasive technique of sputum induction was utilised to show that children with OSA also have airway inflammation, as characterized by a significant increase in neutrophils, and the severity of OSA also correlated significantly with the degree of neutrophilic inflammation (Chapter 7). This finding may lead to research on the use of anti-inflammatory therapeutic agents or antibiotics for the treatment of childhood OSA. Another marker of inflammation, C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured in a cohort of children with OSA before and after treatment (Chapter 8). Children with OSA had higher CRP levels compared to their non-OSA counterparts, and the raised CRP decreased significantly following treatment suggesting that the inflammatory response is potentially reversible. The cardiovascular risk factors of insulin levels and blood pressure (BP) were evaluated and children with OSA had higher serum insulin and greater systolic and diastolic BP compared to healthy controls (Chapters 9 and 10). These findings suggest that children with OSA may be at risk of developing metabolic syndrome and its devastating consequence. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) / The original research studies undertaken were based on nocturnal sleep examinations to explore childhood OSA in two main aspects, namely its assessment, and a better understanding of its complications in children. The gold standard for diagnosing OSA is overnight polysomnography (PSG), which is an expensive investigation that is not routinely available at all public hospitals in Hong Kong. Alternative valid assessment tools for OSA that are more cost-effective are needed. The feasibility of using radiographic techniques to assess severity of OSA was explored, and the size of the upper airway, as reflected by the tonsillar pharyngeal (TP) ratio obtained from lateral neck radiograph, correlated well with the severity of OSA (Chapter 4). A defined TP cutoff could accurately predict moderate-to-severe OSA with high sensitivity and specificity. This method could be used in clinical practice to prioritize patients with suspected OSA for further evaluation. A locally applicable questionnaire scale was examined for its validity and accuracy in diagnosing children with OSA (Chapter 5). The presence of three symptoms (snoring, mouth breathing and nocturnal sweating) was found to have high predictive value in correctly identifying children with the condition. The question of whether a single night PSG study is adequate in diagnosing OSA was examined together with the assessment for the presence of night-to-night variability in PSG and respiratory parameters in childhood sleep (Chapter 6). Forty-four obese children and 43 age and sex-matched healthy controls underwent two consecutive nights PSG examination. Although a first night effect was clearly documented, a single night PSG study would have correctly identified over 80% of children with OSA. Šiame darbe aptartas vaikų nerimastingumas (nerimo bruožas būti pastoviu), jo priežastys, tipai. Taip pat aptarti vaikų miego sutrikimai, jų simptomai, priežastys. Darbe aptartos vaikų nerimastingumo ir miego sutrikimų sąsajos.
Šio darbo tikslas - įvertinti vaikų, lankančių priešmokyklinio ugdymo grupę nerimastingumo lygmenį, bei nustatyti tų vaikų miego sutrikimus (nemigą, lunatizmą, bruksizmą, naktinius košmarus, naktinį siaubą, neramių kojų sindromą bei enurezę) apklausiant jų tėvus. Nustatyti ar vaikams yra įvesta miego rutina ir miego higiena. Taip pat ieškoti sąsajų tarp vaikų nerimastingumo ir miego sutrikimų.
Atliktas tyrimas, kurio metu buvo ištirti 108 priešmokyklinę ugdymo grupę darželyje lankantys vaikai (amžiaus vidurkis mėnesiais: 80 4). Iš jų 56 berniukai (51,9 %) (amžiaus vidurkis mėnesiais: 80 4) ir 52 mergaitės (48,1 %) (amžiaus vidurkis mėnesiais: 81 4). Taip pat į anketos klausimus apie vaikų miego sutrikimus atsakinėjo jų tėveliai.
Išanalizavus gautus duomenis, nustatyta, kad miego sutrikimai (nemiga, naktiniai košmarai, naktinis siaubas, lunatizmas, bruksizmas, šlapinimasis į lovą, neramių kojų sindromas, nesuformuota miego higiena ir rutina) yra vienodai išreikšti berniukų ir mergaičių grupėse. Vaikų nerimastingumas nepriklauso nuo vaikų lyties ir vidutinių šeimos pajamų per mėnesį. Tačiau vaikai miegantys darbo savaitę darželyje pasižymi didesniu nerimastingumu nei vaikai, kurie darbo savaitę miega namuose. Taip pat nerimastingumas yra... The aim of this work is to rate preschooler trait-anxiety level and to assess children sleep disorders (insomnia, sleepwalking, bruxism, naightmares, night terror, periodic limb movement and enuresis) by questioning their parents. To determine whether there is sleep routine and sleep hygiene institued in familys of participants. Also to establish correlations of preschooler trait-anxiety link with sleep disorders.
Participants of the research were 108 preschoolers (age mean 80 4 months). 56 boys (51,9 %) and 52 girls (48,1 %). Parents of particiapants were asked to fill in the form about children sleep disorders and some socio-demographic information.
When the achieved data were analysed, it was determined that sleep disoreders such as insomnia, sleepwalking, bruxism, naightmares, night terror, periodic limb movement, enuresis and sleep routine with sleep hygiene has no diferences in groups of boys and girls. Trait-anxiety is not issued by gender and by incomes of parents. Children who sleep at night in kindergarden all work week has higher trait-anxiety level than children who sleep at home. Dessa forma, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar a função neuropsicológica atencional de crianças com distúrbios do sono. A metodologia utilizada foi um estudo transversal de coorte, onde, participaram deste estudo 25 crianças de terceiro e quarto anos do ensino fundamental. A presença ou não de distúrbios do sono foi avaliada através do questionário Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in Portuguese e para a avaliação neuropsicológica foram utilizadas os testes: RAVEN, TDE e TAVIS III. Após análise e discussão dos resultados foi possível concluir que a frequencia encontrada de crianças com distúrbios do sono em uma população de escolares do terceiro e quarto ano do ensino fundamental de 90 participantes foi de 25 crianças (28%). Os tipos de distúrbios encontrados foram: Distúrbios de início e manutenção do sono; Distúrbio respiratório do sono; Distúrbio do despertar; Distúrbio de transição sono/vigília; Sonolência excessiva diurna e Hiperhidrose do sono, sendo o de maior incidência 68% (17 crianças) o Distúrbios respiratórios obstrutivos, e em segundo (8 crianças) 32% a hiperhidrose do sono. O nível intelectual das crianças estudadas apresentou-se na média e o desempenho escolar ficou abaixo da média, no nível inferior. Os níveis neuropsicológicos relacionados à seletividade, a alternância e a sustentação da atenção apresentaram-se deficitários, sendo a tarefa que exigia o nível sustentação da atenção a mais prejudicada. Ao correlacionar a presença de distúrbios do sono ao perfil de aprendizagem e as funções neuropsicológicas atencionais, apenas uma correlação ocorreu com significância... / The field of stury within the child's universe is vast and many variables can be measured, analyzed and correlated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate attentional neuropsychological function in children with sleep disorders. The methodology used was a cross-sectional cohort, where 25 children participated in this study of third and fourth of elementary school. The presence or absence of sleep disorders was assessed by questionnaire Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in Portuguese and the neuropsychological tests were used: RAVEN, TDE and TAVIS III. After analysis and discussion of results it was concluded that the frequency found in children with sleep disorders in a population of schoolchildren of third and fourth years of elementary school 90 participants were 25 children (28%). The types of disorders were: disorders of onset and sleep maintenance, sleep breathing disorder, disorder of awakening; disorder transition sleep/walke cycle; hyperhidrosis excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep, with the highest incidence of 68% (17 children) the DROS and second (8 children) 32% hyperhydrosis sleep. The intellectual level of children studied had on the average and academic performance was below average at the lower level. The neuropsychological levels related to slectivity, switching and sustained attention deficit is presented, and the task that required sustained attention at the most affected. By correlating the presence of sleep disorders to the profile of learning attentional neuropsychological functions, only one occurred with significant positive correlation, which is between school performance and attentional task of sustained attention.
