Chen Daqi and the foundation of the "new" psychology in republican China

Wong, Chin-hei., 黃展曦. January 2011 (has links)
The history of the founding and early development of the “new” western experimental psychology in China has long been a myth due to an absence of detailed and systematic research. Equally ironic is the fact that the biography, publications and contributions of Chen Daqi, a man who is widely regarded as the “founder of experimental psychology in China”, have never been seriously studied in the past. This thesis is an attempt to fill in these historical gaps. Its first half, being primarily an archival study, traces the history of the founding and early development of the “new” psychology in China, in particular within the campus of Beijing University, during the early Republican era (ca. 1917-1923). It also examines the psychological publications of Chen Daqi. The second half of the thesis contextualizes these developments within a broader discussion of various issues related to the transfer of psychological knowledge from the west. The traditional understanding of psychology in Republican China, that it was merely a passive “copy” of the west’s is refuted. Kurt Danziger’s theory concerning the two prerequisites for the successful establishment of a new science is utilized to show how Chen Daqi’s attempts to develop psychology proceeded smoothly after the new discipline was first introduced into China in the late 1910s. This study concludes with a re-evaluation of Chen’s project. / published_or_final_version / Psychology / Master / Master of Philosophy

Government document systems in Qin dynasty evident in Qin bamboo slips = Cong Qin jian kan Qin dai gong wen zhi du / Government document systems in Qin dynasty evident in Qin bamboo slips = 從秦簡看秦代公文制度

Fu, Ho-yi, Crystal, 傅皓皚 January 2013 (has links)
It is a wonder to discover the remarkable progress the Qin Dynasty made two thousand years ago concerning its documentation systems. Ever since the excavation of the Shuihudi (in Chinese 睡虎地), we now know in Qin, there was the Rule Book of Implementation 《行書》律(about the laws on documentation systems). Unfortunately, there was no correspondence for cross examination. Not until the excavation of the Liye (里耶) site in 2002 were we able to identify the format of the correspondence between the central government, provinces and towns. From the 37000 bamboo slips of Qin which are rich in contents, we can see they covered every aspect. As well, the 2008 Yuelu (嶽麓)bamboo slips appeared to fill the gaps left by Shuihudi. They provide clues, allowing the author to reconstruct the profile of Qin’s documentation systems. Scholars working on the documentation systems of Qin through the bamboo slips appear to base their findings on only isolated excavations, such as the discussion of either Shuihudi or Liye. But when they researched on the postal system which was central to the wider documentation systems, they had to rely on the clues provided by the Warring States Period, or on the bamboo slips of the Han Dynasty. There are thus limitations. For example, we cannot assume that Han must have inherited its systems from Qin. This thesis looks at the many unearthed bamboo slips having to do with Qin’s documentation systems, revisits and organizes current researches and attempts to reconstruct the state of documentation in Qin. / published_or_final_version / Chinese Language and Literature / Master / Master of Arts

A study of Han Yu's eulogy = Han Yu ji wen yan jiu / A study of Han Yu's eulogy = 韓愈祭文研究

Kan, Man-yee, 簡敏兒 January 2013 (has links)
Han Yu (768-824) was a famous essayist in Tang Dynasty. He was one of the “Eight Great Prose Maters of the Tang and Song”(唐宋古文八大家)and had an important role in advocating the Classical Prose Movement(古文運動). His prose writings had a great influence on literature at that time and this contributed to a rising number of proses. His strong opposition of parallel prose(駢文) motivated the other literati to imitate his styled writings. As a result, there was no doubt that Han Yu was honored as a great prose writer because of his achievement in literary reform. A study of Han Yu and his proses have been a hot topic in literary research for years. Despite Han Yu’s prose, his poetry was another focus of scholarly research. Nevertheless, a specific, comprehensive research on his eulogy was not yet founded. In response to this finding, this research is therefore aimed at a thorough analysis of his eulogies and his various images which are shown in his work. This thesis begins with an introduction of previous contribution and achievement of Han Yu’s scholarly researches. The second chapter indicates how Han Yu links his life experience with his family’s or friend’s death in a eulogy. The third chapter aims at revealing the friendship of Han Yu and his friends. The following chapter is writing to explore Han Yu’s various ideas of the politics, the Heaven and the self-blaming attempt. The last chapter is a concluding section of the findings in Han Yu’s eulogy from the previous chapter. / published_or_final_version / Chinese Language and Literature / Master / Master of Arts
