Examinations of the effects of (a.) alkyl carbon chain length and (b.) perfluorination of acyl chlorides; propionyl chloride, butyryl chloride, valeroyl chloride, and perfluorinated acyl chlorides; perfluoropropionyl chloride and perfluorobutyryl chloride, are reported and compared using CP-FTMW spectroscopy. All of these molecules are already published in various journals except for valeroyl chloride. The chapters are organized by molecule alkyl chain length and include some background theory. Conformational stability, internal rotation, helicity, and ionic character of the C-Cl bond via the nuclear electric quadrupole coupling constant (χzz) are analyzed. Results show syn, syn-anti/syn-gauche, and syn-anti-anti/syn-gauche-anti stable conformations. Internal rotation was only seen in propionyl chloride. Helicity was not observed. (χzz) was observed to be inert to alkyl chain length, ~ 60 MHz and ~ 65 MHz for the nonfluorinated and fluorinated acyl chlorides. Partial fluorination and varying functional groups are recommended.

The organic base choline is of considerable interest to the physiologist because of its role in normal metabolic function, and to the pharmacologist because of its possible application in the treatment of several human diseases.
The overall function of choline in the biologic system must be seen as an equilibrium between its lipotropic activity as a whole molecule and its function as a source of methyl groups in biochemical reactions.
IV. Investigation Undertaken in This Study
Due to the long-standing and as yet unresolved question dealing with the relative merits of the path by which choline leaves the intestine, these studies were carried out in an attempt to resolve some of the obvious contradictions apparent in the literature. The following is a brief listing of the course of experimentation:
1. A study of the rate of trimethylamine excretion in the rabbit following oral administration of choline chloride.
2. A study of the rate of trimethylamine formation while incubating choline chloride with the intestinal contents of rabbits, in an attempt to correlate the rate of urinary excretion of trimethylamine with the rate of its production from choline by intestinal bacteria.
3. A study of the rate of trimethylamine formation when choline is incubated with rat intestinal content using different incubation media and incubation periods. This was done in an attempt to determine whether the rate of trimethylamine formation in vitro may be influenced by the period of incubation and the incubation employed.

Correlation of Chloride Diffusivity and Electrical Resistance for Cracked ConcreteUnknown Date (has links)
The durability of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures in the Marine environment is
causing serious concern in the structural infrastructure. Reinforced concrete structures,
exposed to aggressive environments, are expected to last with little or no maintenance for
long periods of time. However, one of the most serious environmental exposures that
causes degradation is Chloride Diffusion, due to shrinkage, atmospheric corrosion, and
tide-induced wet and dry conditions at the air-water interfaces of coastal structures.
Therefore, chloride diffusivity, which correlates with the electrical resistivity, has a
significant impact on the durability of concrete. Concrete chloride diffusivity has been
experimented by multiple agencies and researchers on sound concrete, but there is a
considerable need for investigation of the durability of cracked concrete in the marine
environment. The two test methods carried out are presented: Standardized American Society for Testing
and Materials (ASTM) C1202 for Rapid Chloride Permeability (RCP) and ASTM D257
for Surface Resistivity (SR), and Nordtest (NT) Build 492 for Rapid Chloride Migration
(RCM) and Bulk Resistivity (BR) for both sound (uncracked) and cracked (micro and
macro) concrete. The limitations of the ASTM method, due to measurements before the
steady-state migration is reached, does not account for leakage in cracked concrete, and the
heating of the specimen due to higher current that increase the conductivity are indicated.
The Rapid Chloride Migration test provides for the non-steady state of diffusion. Again,
Bulk Resistivity, in contradistinction to Surface Resistivity is more accurate for cracked
concrete. The correlation betweeen RCM-BR are plotted. Chloride Permeability/Migration
is an important parameter that governs the Durability of Concrete.
The principal contribution is the highlighting of the inadequacy of the current widely used
standard ASTM C1202 for diffusivity testing, and the need for revision with further

Industrial Pilot Scale Leaching and Recovery of Zinc from Waste-to-Energy Fly Ash using Scrubber LiquidsWagner, Manuela January 2016 (has links)
Previous studies from laboratory experiments and a similar process at a plant in Switzerland, led to the pilot plant project at Renova AB, which will be described in this master thesis. In cooperation with Götaverken Miljö AB it was investigated if fly ash, produced at the Renova Waste-to-Energy plant in Gothenburg, could be treated with own scrubber liquids in order to recover zinc. If successful, Renova might build this tested pilot process in to a big scale. The pilot plant has a scale of 16 times smaller than a future big scale process. The goal of the project is to leach zinc from fly ash and gain a fly ash residue, which is classified as non-hazardous waste. The filtrate from the leaching campaign is treated so that the containing zinc is recovered. The zinc cake end product shall has a quality so that it can be sold to other industries or upgraded to high purity zinc metal. The evaluation of the experiments showed that the pilot plant process was successful. It was possible to leach out zinc by a maximum quote of 74%. The total recovery of zinc could be achieved by a maximum of 72%. The final zinc cake product was achieved through a precipitation and filtration campaign. This thesis evaluates, which process set-ups for zinc recovery through leaching and precipitation & filtration are the best and can be recommended for a big scale process. In addition, it briefly analyses the zinc product quality. Future studies will be necessary within: cost analysis of the process, zinc product quality and an analysis of the ash residue.
