ORGANIZATIONS, RELIGION, AND LEGAL MOBILIZATION: THE CASE OF CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE LEGAL ADVOCACYBennett, Daniel 01 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is a study of a social movement based on the organizations that define that movement, with specific attention to Christian conservative legal organizations (CCLOs) and their advocacy for the Christian Right in American politics. I ask, how do these organizations differ from one another in their advocacy efforts? How is this movement industry structured with respect to organizational networks? And how do the differences and variation among these organizations affect the dynamics among these groups? That is, how do organizations interact in the confines of a shared movement? This study addresses the literatures on law and society, religion and politics, and social movements, acting as a bridge between these distinct areas of inquiry. Using social network analysis, qualitative content analysis, and original interviews with movement attorneys, I find that CCLOs differ in their behaviors in their industry of activism and in their interaction with other CCLOs. I further argue that these behaviors are best understood in terms of unique organizational characteristics like structure, expertise, and relations with other groups. I conclude that organizations bearing surface similarities to one another can actually differ in meaningful ways, ways that facilitate and drive interaction among these groups in their shared movement and movement industry.

Une analyse du processus politique qui est à l’œuvre dans la mobilisation et l’action du Christian Coalition – organisation de la nouvelle droite chrétienne – permet de cerner la place qu’a le religieux dans la sphère publique, et plus particulièrement, dans la sphère politique. Plus spécifiquement, nous observerons les stratégies et les actions que le C.C. entreprend dans le but d’exercer des pressions et d’influencer les débats et le pouvoir politique, tout en déterminant la nature des enjeux qui motivent une mobilisation pour ce groupe protestant conservateur. Une évaluation basée sur le courant des mouvements sociaux illustrera la mesure dans laquelle la nouvelle droite chrétienne détient une partie du pouvoir social et jouit du rôle d’acteur politique par son institutionnalisation dans la sphère politique.

Tropes and Topoi of Anti-Intellectualism in the Discourse of the Christian RightCarney, Zoe L. 2010 May 1900 (has links)
Christianity is
not
anti-intellectual;
however,
there
is
a
distinct
quality
of
anti-intellectualism
in
the
rhetoric
of
the
Christian
Right.
This
thesis
explores
the
ways
in
which
rhetors
in
the
Christian
Right
encourage
anti-intellectual
sentiment
without
explicitly
claiming
to
be
against
intellectualism.
I
argue
that
the
Christian
Right
makes
these
anti-intellectual
arguments
by
invoking
the
tropes
and
topoi
of
populism,
anti-evolution,
and
common
sense.
I
analyze
how
Pat
Robertson,
as
a
representative
of
the
Christian
Right,
used
the
stock
argument,
or
topos,
of
populism
in
his
1986
speech,
in
which
he
announced
his
intention
to
run
for
President.
I
argue
that
while
Robertson
used
the
generic
argumentative
framework
of
populism,
which
is
"anti-elitist,"
he
shifted
the
meaning
of
the
word
"elitist"
from
a
wealthy
person
to
an
intellectual
person.
This
formed
a
trope,
or
turn
in
argument.
Next,
I
consider
the
Christian
Right's
argument
against
the
teaching
of
evolution.
I
analyze
William
J.
Bryan's
argument
in
the
Scopes
Trial,
a
defining
moment
in
the
creation-evolution
debate.
I
show
that
Bryan
used
the
topos
of
creationism,
which
included
the
loci
of
quality
and
order,
to
condemn
the
teaching
of
evolution,
arguing
that
it
would
be
better
to
not
have
education
at
all
than
for
students
to
be
taught
something
that
contradicts
the
Bible.
Finally,
I
consider
how
both
Ronald
Reagan
and
Sarah
Palin
used
the
topos
of
common
sense.
Reagan
used
this
topos
to
create
a
metaphorical
narrative
that
was
to
be
accepted
as
reality,
or
common
sense.
Sarah
Palin,
then,
used
the
common
sense
narrative
that
Reagan
had
created
to
support
her
views.
By
calling
her
ideas
"common
sense"
and
frequently
referencing
Reagan,
her
rhetoric
gives
the
illusion
that
good
governing
is
simple,
thus
removing
the
space
for
an
intellectual
in
public
life.

A Battle for Righteousness: Jimmy Carter and Religious NationalismJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: Time magazine called 1976 "the year of the evangelical" partly in response to the rapid political ascent of the previously little-known Georgia governor Jimmy Carter. A Sunday school teacher and deacon in his local church, Carter emphasized the important role of faith in his life in a way that no presidential candidate had done in recent memory. However, scholarly assessments of Carter's foreign policy have primarily focused on his management style or the bureaucratic politics in his administration. This study adds to the growing literature in American diplomatic history analyzing religion and foreign policy by focusing on how Carter's Christian beliefs and worldview shaped his policymaking and how his religious convictions affected his advisors. To better demonstrate this connection, this dissertation primarily discusses Carter's foreign policy vis-à-vis religious nationalist groups of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). By drawing on archival materials from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, Carter's own voluminous writings, and memoirs of other administration officials, this dissertation argues that Carter's religious values factored into policymaking decisions, although sometimes in a subtle fashion due to his strong Baptist doctrinal commitment to the separation of church and state. Moreover, Carter's initial success in using his religious beliefs in the Camp David negotiations raised expectations among administration officials and others when crises arose, such as the hostage taking in Iran and the electoral threat of the Christian Right. Despite his success at Camp David, invoking religious values can complicate situations already fraught with sacred symbolism. Ultimately, this dissertation points to the benefits and limits of foreign policy shaped by a president with strong public religious convictions as well as the advantages and pitfalls of scholars examining the impact of religion on presidential decision making. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. History 2013

Fighting the Good Fight: The Religious Right and American Foreign Policy Since World War IISeely, Christopher 21 September 2015 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the question of the foreign policy views of the leading spokespeople for the Religious Right in the United States since the end of World War II. The analysis begins with the early years of the Cold War, focusing on the religious overtones that quickly became part of America's efforts at confronting Soviet communism. The fight against "godless" communism led to an increased emphasis on the religious character of the United States. This emphasis on religion elevated the prestige of religious conservatives, granting them a voice in both domestic and foreign policy matters.
The dissertation examines how during the 1970s many religious conservatives believed that the United States had entered a period of spiritual decline. This view had a direct impact on their foreign policy views because they connected their perception of this domestic moral decay with their fears concerning what they saw as America's international decline during this same period.
The dissertation discusses the specific foreign policy views of religious conservatives on issues such as defense spending, nuclear buildup, détente, foreign aid, and the end of the Cold War. It also describes how those in the Religious Right worked to find common cause with other groups within the growing conservative coalition. An analysis of their specific views demonstrates that religious conservatives often used their views on foreign-policy issues as ways to build stronger ties with, and strengthen their position in, the conservative coalition.
Finally, the dissertation shows that the religious beliefs, eschatological views, and political considerations of religious conservatives led those individuals to put great emphasis on the United States' relationship with, and support for the State of Israel throughout the Cold War. After the Cold War ended, members of the religious right continued to emphasize the importance of American-Israeli relations, partially in an effort to maintain some level of relevance and credibility on foreign policy issues, and partially because the new global war on terror realigned American international priorities in a way that once again made Israel a key ally against the "forces of evil" in the world.
