Živelné pohromy na Rychnovsku očima lidových kronikářů 1700-1800 / Natural disasters in the region of Rychnov in sight of folk chroniclers 1700-1800

Věchet, Jan January 2017 (has links)
v anglickém jazyce The study of sources related to the folk provenance is often in terms of the Czech historiography a neglected issue. Especially the research of folk chronicles has reached the utmost boom in the middle of the nineteenth century and then also in the interwar years. Nowadays, the study does not attract much attention. Therefore, the aim of this work is to capture and systematize the existing knowledge on this subject. Moreover, it is necessary to emphasize and show some other possibilities of dealing with these particular sources because they are valuable work for contemporary historiographical studies such as microhistorical and cultural anthropological research. Although one might think that these annals have rather a small informative value for the traditional political historical events, they offer an interesting insight into everyday life of ordinary people living in the countryside those days. This fact can definitely help one understand traditions as it also represents tendencies and trends in attitudes and behaviour of the rural society those days. The main purpose of the thesis is to consider what motivated folk authors to note down their stories and experience in chronicles. The alarming fact is that the post-war historiography has caused a lot of confusion over the true...

Cronistas do Rio : o processo de modernização do Rio de Janeiro nas crônicas de Olavo Bilac (Kosmos, 1904-1908) e Lima Barreto (Careta, 1915-1922) /

Nogueira, Clara Miguel Asperti. January 2012 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century, the chronicle was cultivated by great writers and had a good readership. Through the new gender, renowned writers sought in journalism, especially in Rio, their careers consolidation, and eventually turned into real everyday commentators of the recently deployed Republic. Rio de Janeiro, in the late 19th and early 20th century, was marked as the uniting of new cultural, political and social trends, which were spread across the world. In this context, which included a capital that was desired to be modern and civilized, is where we find the publication of the chronicles of two icons of that time: Olavo Bilac and Lima Barreto. This research will intend to show the similarities and separations that marked the writing of these two names in literature, having the main focus on modernization of the Federal Capital resulting from prophylactic reforms promoted by Pereira Passos and Rodrigues Alves as well as their socio-cultural developments, mainly from 1904. This essay will have as its central objective the analysis of the chronicles produced by Olavo Bilac and Lima Barreto, writers who may be considered, each in his way, great reviewers of this new metropolis. Besides the literary approach of the chronicles, the journalistic importance of the gender will also be prioritized, as well as the ideological force which sometimes repelled and sometimes approached the views of those writers before the whirl of news that were invading Rio de Janeiro. Through the study of Bilac's chronicles, published... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Vývoj školy v Mlazicích v historickém kontextu / Development of Mlazice school in the historical context

Novotná, Jana January 2020 (has links)
This work focuses on the first comprehensive describing of the history of the school in Mlazice. Everything is set within the wider framework of the development of the village and its immediate surroundings. There are also circumstances that contributed to the establishment of this school. Some chapters summarize the history of Czech education and the historical development of Mlazic and its surroundings, with an emphasis on these circumstances. The school in Mlazice was founded in 1902. Most of the materials are taken from the fund of the district archive in Mělník. Based on the preserved school chronicles from 1902-1973, the development of a small village school is shown. The history of this also reflects the individual specifics of the historical periods that the school went through. At first, only men taught here, and gradually women were added. In the last year, which is carried out in chronicles, only women have taught here. I also tried to highlight more important celebrations and other events. Most of the children of the workers went to this school, so lectures and trips at the beginning were not much organized. Chronicles also contain what donations the school has supported. These gifts were, among other things, used for children of poorer families to be able to be better educated. The...

Three Portrayals of King Hezekiah: A Comparison of 2 Kings 18-20, Isaiah 36-39, and 2 Chronicles 29-32

Choi, Jeaman (Jaeman) 13 March 2015 (has links)

Hezekiah is portrayed as a pious and faithful king in three biblical accounts: 2 Kgs 18-20, Isa 36-39 and 2 Chr 29-32. The way Hezekiah is characterized, however, is quite different in each of these three biblical accounts. Utilizing narrative analysis, this dissertation concentrated specifically on the characterization of Hezekiah in the literary context of these three biblical accounts. Hezekiah's story was examined first as a discrete account applying narrative features separately and then as a story within the larger context of each book. Then, the portrayal of Hezekiah in the three biblical books was compared in conclusion. This dissertation demonstrated that these three biblical accounts relate the same reign of King Hezekiah in their unique way according to their purpose and their individual point of view. The Kings account focuses on Hezekiah's political events including his negative aspects in order to show the faithfulness of the LORD in His promise to David (2 Sam 7) through Hezekiah's faithful actions to the LORD. Hezekiah is portrayed as a round character whose characterization is developed within the story. In Isaiah, the Hezekiah story is reshaped by the narrator by omitting and inserting some parts of Hezekiah's narratives in the Kings account. Hezekiah is portrayed as a more faithful king than his father, Ahaz, in order to encourage the people who heard the visions of Isaiah, to trust in the LORD sincerely. In Chronicles, the Hezekiah narratives are related differently by expanding, abridging, and rephrasing his Vorlage. The Chronicles account depicts Hezekiah as the best king among the Davidic kings in order to indicate the beginning of the reunited kingdom. Thus, the Chronicles account fully expands Hezekiah's religious reforms and abridges his political events in order to portray him as a second David and Solomon. In the three accounts, Hezekiah is not portrayed as a perfect king, but instead as a limited human king in order to encourage the readers to see the LORD, the heavenly King.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Combat Music, Usability, and Presence in Video Games

Wong, Jedidah 01 January 2021 (has links)
The interactive nature of video games offers players unique playthroughs of the same game. Choices made during gameplay, despite going through the same narrative story, create a journey that differs from other players. Music can help support a player's connection to the game's characters and narrative while also providing information to the player to guide their decisions. Ludomusicological studies in the past have shown how music can support a game's narrative, while also serving to inform players of changes in game states. The usability function of music, while crucial in this overall sonic experience, is not the sole purpose that music can fulfill. An area in ludomusicological research that's less explored is understanding how a composer's intent for their music is not indicative of the player experience but rather influences the way players play the game and how they are emotionally impacted by the music. Combat scenarios are an effective area that showcases the usability aspects of music as well as its impact on player presence, which will be demonstrated through the game Xenoblade Chronicles. By combining the principles of presence, immersion, engagement, topic theory, and adapting the dual semiotic approach of Iain Hart, this thesis seeks to analyze the composer's intent behind musical choices and how it shapes the overall player experience.

The Doctrine of the Atonement in the Writings of C.S. Lewis

Vendetti, Rebecca January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation examines the theology of C.S. Lewis in light of the writings of Athanasius, Augustine, and Anselm. Specifically, it looks at the role that justice and mercy play in each of these theologian’s understanding of the atonement. It proceeds on the basis that Lewis does in fact have a specific, robust, and coherent understanding of the atonement, and that his theological anthropology and his understanding of sanctification are an outworking of his understanding of the atonement. Chapter 1 lays out Lewis’ theological orientation and his method. Chapter 2 engages with Athanasius, Augustine, and Anselm on the atonement, and it lays out the particular concepts that were crucial in their understanding of the atonement, namely the justice and mercy of God. It outlines the fundamental concepts that we find in seedling form in Athanasius and Augustine and that were brought to full fruition in Anselm. It also argues that Anselm’s satisfaction theory is best understood as grounded in the nature of God, rather than in Anselm’s feudal, Medieval context. Chapter 3 examines Lewis on the atonement, and it traces the concepts that Lewis uses to describe and explain Christ’s death and resurrection. While Lewis does not adhere to any one doctrine or understanding of the atonement, there is a common thread that unites the various pictures that he takes to be true representations of the atonement. Fundamentally, for Lewis, the atonement is about the restitution of proper order that was disrupted in the Fall. Chapter 3 examines which theories of the atonement Lewis accepts and which he rejects. It also traces his understanding of the atonement to his understanding of the nature of God, relying on the concept of justitia defined as proper order, which has its source in the nature of God himself. In so doing, it aims to show that Lewis’ later understanding of the atonement is fundamentally Anselmian. Chapter 4 engages with Lewis’ theological anthropology and his understanding of sanctification, focusing on the process of “good infection” and how Lewis envisions the spread of the new life made available after Christ’s act of atonement. Sanctification, for Lewis, like the atonement, is also fundamentally about proper order. This plays out in his theological anthropology largely in terms of humility and obedience to God. Finally, chapter 5 addresses Narnia specifically and traces the concepts of justitia and proper order throughout the series and aims to show that, by focusing on proper order, we can see how the series hangs together as a whole theologically as an outworking of Lewis’ understanding of the atonement. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Cyborgs, Wolves, and Aliens, Oh My: Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles and Diversity in YA Fairy Tale Retellings

Bailey, Carson Gale 05 June 2023 (has links)
The following study is interested in questions of diversity and inclusiveness in Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles, a tetralogy of best-selling young adult fairy tale revisions comprised of Cinder (2012), Scarlet (2013), Cress (2014), and Winter (2015). Scholars have expended significant energy defining the fairy tale, tracing its history and development, and analyzing 20th-century adult fairy tale revisions informed by second-wave feminism. However, little scholarly attention has been paid to young adult fairy tale revisions of the 21st Century and less still on The Lunar Chronicles. This study begins the work of filling that gap. Through a close reading of The Lunar Chronicles, I argue that Meyer's tetralogy is an influential, complex, and thematically comprehensive example of an ongoing shift away from feminist fairy tale revisions for adults toward young adult fairy tale revisions that focus on diversity and inclusiveness. My project begins with a chapter situating Meyer's work in the context of existing fairy tale scholarship and the burgeoning emphasis on diversity in contemporary American culture and young adult publishing. The following three chapters provide, respectively, a close reading of The Lunar Chronicles focused on racial identity, gender and sexuality, and disabilities. In showcasing more recent YA fairy tale retellings, the final chapter seeks to draw some tentative conclusions about the continuing importance of diversity and inclusiveness in an evolving genre of reimagined fairy tales for a young adult audience. / Master of Arts / In her bestselling young adult science fiction tetralogy The Lunar Chronicles (2012-2015), Marissa Meyers reimagines four classic fairy tales: "Cinderella" (Cinder), "Little Red Riding Hood" (Scarlet), "Rapunzel" (Cress), and "Snow White" (Winter). Meyer's work continues a tradition of revising traditional fairy tales. Disney's Princess franchise of reimagined fairy tales has essentially defined the genre for generations of American children, while Angela Carter's adult fairy tale revisions challenged its patriarchal orientation in the wake of second-wave feminism. In my detailed textual analysis of The Lunar Chronicles, I argue that Meyer's tetralogy is a relatively early, influential, and comprehensive example of a developing wave of specifically young adult fairy tale retellings that reflects a growing focus on issues of diversity and inclusiveness in 21st-century America. My project begins with a chapter that places Meyer's work in historical context, focusing on the development and definition of the fairy tale and presenting a brief overview of previous approaches to fairy tale revision. In the next three chapters, I analyze The Lunar Chronicles as it complicates questions of, respectively, race, gender and sexuality, and disability. My project concludes with a brief overview of young adult fairy tale retellings of the last decade, exploring how the genre continues to engage with questions of diversity and inclusiveness.

Die Afrikaanse bestemming van C S Lewis se The voyage of the Dawn Treader

Van der Watt, Marike 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human & Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations of the translation. By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro levels. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S. Die drie onvertaalde boeke in die reeks is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle.
