Reel houses of horror: Film, body and architecture

Triggs, Riley Grant January 2006 (has links)
An exploration of the emotional intertwining of character and architecture in two horror films of the 1960s, The Haunting (Robert Wise, 1964) and Repulsion (Roman Polanski, 1965). In these films we find fully rendered illustrations of architecture that include the non-visible element of emotion that is essential in the becoming of architecture and place.

Playback: The act or process of replaying a recording

Buttyan, Anne January 2004 (has links)
Each hour there are thousands of security cameras recording our public places. The millions of hours of saved surveillance footage creates a strange and fascinating record of our daily lives. The authors of these videos create them not with the ideas of an artistic compositional scheme or narrative. Instead, they are determined by a desire for maximum visual efficiency. This thesis is a series of urban documentaries in simultaneous play-back. These recordings are the simulation of a surveillance system upon a site in Houston, Texas. The system uses the qualities of surveillance by recording the site through different variables such as frame rate changes, motion detection, variable fields of view and multiple viewings of an event. These variables reconfigure both the spatial and temporal character of this urban condition that results in a new architecture---an alternate city.

(Re)creating a hero's narrative through music| Different musical landscapes in six live action Batman films

Solis, Israel 11 February 2014 (has links)

This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary approach that analyzes and compares the film scoring processes of Danny Elfman, Elliot Goldenthal, James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer in characterizing the fictional hero Batman in film. This is accomplished by applying Classical Hollywood film scoring principles from the golden age of cinema, Juan Chattah's pragmatic and semiotic typologies regarding musical metaphoric expression, and psychology. This amalgamation demonstrates how the aforementioned film composers consider varying structural aspects of their music, i.e., formal design, melodic contour, harmonic gestures, and cadential formulas, in (re)creating and establishing their individual artistic trademarks on a comic book character within canonical and non-canonical storylines. The study includes soundtracks from Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns, Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, and Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The result is an analysis that: 1) enhances what little is known about the music for these films; 2) allows for the recognition of the film scoring creative process behind film sequelization; 3) enhances musical and psychological interpretations of the Batman character; and 4) offers an expansion of Chattah's metaphorical typologies.

Soares, Silnei Scharten January 2001 (has links)

Intertextuality and the break from realism in DreamWorks Animation

Summers, Sam January 2018 (has links)
This thesis contextualises and historicises the contribution of DreamWorks Animation to the dominant aesthetic of contemporary American feature animation from the early 2000s to the present day. Specifically, it aims to justify the claim that mainstream feature animation has shifted away from hyperrealism and towards a form of ‘narrative-cartoonalism’ predicated on non-visual departures from realism. The thesis introduces this term to counteract the focus on the visual in conceptions of animated realism, and aims to identify the extent to which the DreamWorks studio played a key role in this shift, particularly through its use of intertextuality. Tracing the history of intertextuality in animation from the 1920s to the present day, the thesis looks to establish DreamWorks’ position within this lineage by closely examining the studio’s use of star performances, contemporary music, generic pastiche and allusive comedic gags in its features, and discussing the various diegetic contradictions that result. Ultimately, I intend for this thesis to contribute a crucial approach to understanding one of the key studios working during a hugely significant period of western feature animation, not only illuminating the output of Dreamworks but of this period as a whole. Culturally important yet critically neglected, research into the aesthetics of this modern era is essential to the progression of animation studies.

O olho e a navalha : Integração e subversão no cinema marginal de Júlio Bressane /

Marcelino, Ana Beatriz Buoso. January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research aims to investigate the effects of reception and production of meaning generated by the first three feature films by brazilian filmmaker Júlio Bressane: Cara a Cara (Face to Face) (1967), Matou a família e foi ao cinema (Killed his family and went to the cinema) (1969) and O anjo nasceu (The Angel was born) (1969), produced among of a conflicting scenario, constantly changing and during the military dictatorship exactly, hihglighting the Tropicália and Cinema Novo (New Cinema) which, among other engaged movement, dialogued with the cinematography of the director listed before here. The problem of this researh is about an formal crisis (XAVIER, 2012) and narrative (PARENTE, 2000) able to influence the production of meanings of the film and consequently affect the reception of the viewer. Hence the suspicion of the appearance of a reception experience changed between the actions of the hegemony of cinema (Kracauer, 2009) in constrast to a more accurate and sensitive look. Such question would came of the assumption that the subversive language, aesthetic and narrative adopted by the filmmaker, could influence the perception of the viewer moving him to a more active and thoughful position. In addition to the theoretical already mentioned, we will also work with Bernadet (1991) ideas, Teixeira (1995) and Xavier (2007a), among other researchers of the workof Bressane. Favaretto (2007) and Dunn (2009) will be cited in order to trace references to filmmaker approaches with Tropicália, besides Ramos (1987), among others, that will help us to unravel the complexity of this cinema. The methodology, by the way, will be grounded by the theoretical review of essayistic character under the spot of the cinematographic studies, combined with a structural analysis according to the assumptions of Jullier and Marie (2009), Vanoy and Gogliot - lete (2014), Aumont (2013) and Tarin (2006) / Mestre

_________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / “Limite: poem on film” proposes to investigate which are the relations between poetry in cinema and literature starting from Mário Peixoto’s film Limite (1931) as a paradigm. What makes a film to be considered a poem? Which are the antecedents, between the elements that compose the poetic phenomenon, that allows poetry to express not only in words, but also in images? Limite, Mário Peixoto’s famous avant-garde silent classic, shows specific characteristics that lead us to understand it not as a narrative film (it doesn’t tell a story), but as a poem-structured composition, not only because of its nonusual structure, but also for its heavy symbology, that distances it from an usual plot and approximates it to sensibility, to transcendent ideas and to paradoxal relations between men and things. That lead to an investigation of the poetics own nature, of its inextricable ambiguity and of its eternal projecting to insoluble problems. Finally, this Limite study joins to Kant’s transcendental aesthetics trying to understand the philosopher from the film’s contingencies, and the film from the philosopher’s contingencies.
