In contemporary life, more and more people move to live in urban city. Urban life is drastically different from rural life. In urban city, works are highly diversified and repetitive; people are fast-paced, efficiency-oriented and packed in very limited space for movement. The mode of living is tailor-made to the development of the city instead to the individuals who are living in it. Unsurprisingly, 100% of Hong Kong population is living in the urban area. Everyday we are trapped in this mismatch setting of time and space. It is the repressed emotion and desire that revealed by the miscommunication and disconnection among crowds of people, fostered and nurtured the unique practice of Hong Kong Artists. / In this essay entitled Fill in the Blanks - Art of the Disconnection in Urban Daily Life, I attempt to rethink and present an overall image of the body of my artistic work, while studying a series of theoretical and artistic references from the field of contemporary art and cultural studies. / This essay is divided in three main sections: the transformation from observation in urban daily life to conceptualization, the struggle between the artistic intention to execution in specific medium and the conveyance of meanings in artwork by the artist to audience comprehension and interpretation. It also includes the reflections on my thesis work We each walked 2000 kilometers to say good-bye. The thesis examines some of the short and long fiction set in Johannesburg, which is published between approximately 1980 and 2003. The thesis examines how the residents viewed themselves, and evaluates the various social and political struggles and strategies that were employed in an attempt to belong, imagine the city differently and establish strategic identities that would enable them to live a better life during the focused quarter of a century of experiences in an ever-changing fictive Johannesburg. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Local governments are adopting both the rhetoric and practices of market-based governance interventions. Imported into these cities are public relations and marketing tactics to sell cities to internal and external audiences alike. Public communication in these cities went from a public information focus hinging on a just-the-facts approach to a public relations and marketing focus on selling and image generation to please customers. Acute attention to image generation leads to the metaphor of municipalities presented in this research - as public relations and marketing firms. Private sector public relations (PR) and marketing firms gain results for their clients, usually in the form of consumer consumption. A city acting as a public relations and marketing firm puts priority on the image-generation potentials of nearly all its governance functions to sell a commodity to customers. To illustrate this, a six-point model was devised of PR and marketing tactics used in cities operating as public relations and marketing firms: branding, media relations, in-house publications, use of volunteers and outside organizations as PR tools, aesthetic and affective appeal, and sustainability and going green. A city using all six is a fully realized PR and marketing firm, as it adopts, adapts and executes the tactics in meaningful ways. An over-reliance on image-generation (PR and marketing) versus substance (information) pushes public organizations through Baudrillard's four phases of the image. The image of the city becomes dissociated with reality, and the government operates in a simulation of itself. This research uses Qualitative Media Analysis (Altheide, 1996) supplemented by a discourse analysis method created for this research - Baudrillardian Discourse Analysis. / Baudrillardian Discourse Analysis examines market-based, consumer-driven, postmodern language found in public organizations because of the governance changes mentioned earlier. Implications for public administration include: developing a model of organizations for other scholars to examine; introducing a discourse analysis method; and showing realizations of postmodern critiques and impacts of market models on cities. / by Staci M. The debate over what factors actually influence behaviors and attitudes of urban residents is the impetus which generated the idea behind this study. Urban literature suggests several explanations for attitudes including for example, alienation and anemia. These same explanations are assumed to influence behaviors such as: 1) smaller number of children, 2) involvement in voluntary organizations, 3) specialized voting behavior and 4) less kinship contact.
